I'd love to say, "I've got a guy for that!"
I need someone who is better with creating websites than I am. This is an opportunity for someone who has time and the interest in building a collaborative relationship, helping me to improve how I’m presenting my content in exchange for credit, experience, and possibly more in the future. Right now I have a tumblr account and a site that is a blog. I’d like to create a new simple site with multiple functions where the blog is just a portion of the content. I come to the table with a general idea about what I’d like to have aesthetically, but would like to bounce ideas as far as design+function goes. I want this to be fun, inspiring, and to look cool when it’s done.
This is a chance to build your creative resume and get experience working with a client in a collaborative way. I’d be happy to provide recommendations for future endeavors and internship/website credit given.
My current site is http://www.eachuniverse.com
Check it out and let me know if you’re interested by emailing me [email protected]

THE LAUNCH OF EACH UNIVERSE "TINY STORIES" SERIES
We will be hearing and watching people recall a moment when they made a decision, their mind was opened to something new, they began to see the world/themselves/their career/life/love/happiness differently – so much so that the moment was a catalyst in discovering true self/purpose – a moment of elevation -- It can be something seemingly insignificant to others... maybe deciding to buy a sketchbook, maybe the moment someone gave advice that made them see more possibilities, maybe a moment when they felt the weight of unhappiness in a job or relationship so that it caused them to move on to something new (just examples).
We are all in this process, some more aware than others -- I want to hear about the small moments that bring that awareness forth. And so it begins…
This is a breathing exercise we did last week in class. Creating a longer breath on the exhale releases toxins, cleanses the blood, and relaxes the body. We combined cleansing breaths and smiling with tapping of the third-eye to set the good feeling we got from the exercise into place. This very simple combination of techniques was something I put together after listening to Dr. Andrew Weil's "Breathing: The Master Key to Self-Healing" and "Tapping In: A Step-by-Step Guide to Activating Your Healing Resources through Bilateral Stimulation" by Laurel Parnell. Click on the photos above to view specific instructions.
CLASS IS IN SESSION!
I’ve recently begun teaching a self-awareness class at a non-profit here in Portland called Project Bloom. The program focuses on providing a safe and supportive environment for newly homeless women and children so they are able to get back on their feet. They are given up to a year of housing and guidance in all aspects of life. My role is to be a source for practice in self-awareness and success, bringing together meditation, yoga, conversation and nudges of guidance from my own knowledge. I’m feeling super excited and inspired!
This class is “Each Universe” in practice. I saw an opportunity to take the basic principles of my website – do what you love, love how you feel – and share with people in a practical setting. The idea is to provide space and time for these women to understand what it is to feel good. They learn about process, and become aware of their unique spirit, so it is possible to transcend past experiences and create a grounded, healthy and sustainable present from which to live well -- something we all want and need.
This opportunity has brought up a lot for me. Most of all, I am empowered by the idea of being able to be a vessel and role-model for positive self-awareness. When the idea for the class came to me, my body lit up, literally, I felt my eyes widen and my chest open and I felt lighter, and nervous, and frisky! It was awesome. Ideas were flowing and I could see the excitement in Laura’s face too (she’s the Founder and Director of Project Bloom). This work is totally in alignment with who I really am. I’m coming to this project with a strong intuition and personal experience with growth and development, and when I am able to perceive how powerful that is, I feel confident and excited.
Along with excitement and confidence, I’ve also had a few fears. I’ve noticed myself holding my breath and cringing a couple times while describing what the class entails to friends and family -- maybe people won’t think I’m good enough, capable enough, or most of all, qualified enough -- an imposter. Can you relate? At this point, these fears haven’t been a huge stumbling block, but something to be acknowledged nonetheless.
Feelings of inadequacy are common because starting something new can feel overwhelming and scary, but if we never start anything new, then we never start anything –
This brings me to the part where I learn to quickly dissolve these feelings when they come up and move forward gracefully –
Things To Remember:
I practice what I teach.
I listen to the way I talk to people about my work and myself. I have fun re-wording my part of the conversation until it not only sounds better but also feels better when I say it. That way, I am vibrationally in-line with the clarity and confidence I actually feel.
I know that my fear comes from being vulnerable. If I don’t think about it, but instead, just do it, being vulnerable feels great and natural.
Being vulnerable is where authentic connection stems, and authentic connection with others and myself is what I want.
There is no need to fear the thoughts others might have about me, because those thoughts are always their own projection – which is really none of my business. (Thank you Abraham!)
Knowing others’ negative opinions are their fears projected helps me to be more compassionate – something I am grateful for.

Get Your Feet Wet!
Get your feet wet! If a job, goal or project seems overwhelming or unattainable when you think about the big picture, start with something small to build confidence. Once you say yes the first time, the next steps will seem easier.
The Importance of Being Earnest… About Education
Pay attention to what comes into your experience. When something keeps showing up in conversation and/or thought, pay attention. I have been paying attention. Thoughts and conversation of education have been practically slapping me in the face, and I’m feeling the burn enough to want to slap back.
I’ve decided to start small.
Ask Yourself This…
What does it mean to be educated?
What does it mean to be an educator?
How do we want our life to feel and is our education a match for that?
What does it mean to be creative?
What can we do to better cultivate creativity and resilience? Why is it so important that we care?
Asking these questions assumes that the kind of society and world we want to live in supports people who have come alive through their purpose, and therefore, who’s energy contributes to the betterment of the community at large.
I know I want to be that kind of woman. I want to be surrounded by others who have asked themselves what they feel they should do with their lives, and then are brave enough or stubborn enough or feel called enough to allow it to happen, despite convention or obligation, so that their authentic unique expression is felt.
It is so important for us to reframe our thoughts about how and when, and where we get to figure these things out. Do we learn to understand these things about ourselves in school? Do you feel like you were focused on these questions throughout your schooling? If not, what is the real purpose of your education? Maybe it would be best to consider before we spend thousands of dollars and countless hours on an education that might not be all that productive or useful in creating the kind of people we want to be.
Fulfillment and a sense of true creative purpose take a back seat to doing what needs to be done to get through it. When the status of having that piece of paper begins to diminish, while the cost of school rises, lots of people are left wondering what it was all for.
I’ve had countless conversations recently with people, some in their twenties and thirties, others who are older, struggling to finish a college degree, feeling miserable as part of a system of education that isn’t working for them. Some are thinking of going back to school, or are finished with a degree, sometimes finished with two or three degrees, but still don’t know what that education means -- what it really means that is. These people are not the exception. These are people who seem to feel an obligation toward a system of success where the most valued part of education is getting to the finish line. The experience with education that a lot of people talk about has little to do with their actual knowledge or enjoyment and more to do with earning a piece of paper. But then what?
Maybe this could change if school were a place people learned to really cultivate what they feel powerful doing.
I’m not attempting to diminish the idea of going to a university as one form of education, especially if you know what you’d like to do and it requires specific schooling. Life experience I gained at school is vast; measurable by considering the person I choose to be in this moment, and this person, is absolutely affected by the time spent in university classrooms and on a college campus. I can’t exist outside of that because I’ve already had that experience. I’m able to write my degree as a credential on a resume, and in our current system, that has value. However, many times, it has been difficult to even fathom a way to use my voice and other natural abilities to excel financially, working from an antiquated system of deeply ingrained beliefs about school as a mode of success. If school felt difficult or uninspiring so did the potential for creating income and new ideas.
I want for myself and others, an education that focuses on what’s valuable about the diversity of humanity through an individual’s inherent gifts, where emphasis is placed on exploring possibilities of lifestyle and ways of learning that foster fulfillment, joy, and creation. Because true creativity is about, not only coming up with an answer to a question, but also about knowing that there are an infinite number of questions, and an infinite number of outcomes. (Watch Sir Ken Robinson’s TED Talk below for more about this)
We need education to be part of a larger context that examines why and how we learn, and why having that knowledge is so inherently important to who we are and what we want life to be like on this planet.
There is no blame or anger in restructuring something that isn’t working. There simply needs to be a shift toward a new perception of education in general. Think about what that could mean for teachers and students. The entire idea of a school day could be re-imagined. Oh, the lovely possibilities!
Things to Remember:
- Pay attention, be present.
- Listening is learning, so learning to listen is a good thing to learn.
- Be really, really kind to yourself.

Great perspective and highly entertaining!
What's Up?
Each Universe began as a way to talk about re-imaging potential ways of living life in order to feel happy and successful in our career. What we know is, nothing in our lives is actually separate from that process. Andrea and I have allowed ourselves to become a little stuck in the past few months. We’ve been trying to create content that fits into our definition of the type of site we’ve set up as “Each Universe,” and because of that, haven’t felt free to post what’s really been coming up for us (some stuff maybe seemed off topic)… pretty ironic considering the site was intended to be a place to post about what’s up in the process of figuring things out.
Our EU Facebook page has proven a good outlet for posting inspiring talks and links, as well as, little tidbits of our own wisdom (seemed less formal than our site I think). We have recorded hours of amazing phone conversations between others and ourselves, which have each been transformative in some way. We have written things or drawn things that have been meaningful. When it came down to it, though, we hesitated to post on our actual site a lot of times because we had an idea about what the site was supposed to be and for some reason it didn’t seem to lend itself to the type of things we were creating. At the present moment, EU looks like a blog. I’d like it to be a dynamic website. So, a rebirth of sorts is in order.
Each Universe is a resource center, a record of process that is alive and ever changing. It speaks to a holistic idea that a job or career or whatever word you need to use to define your life’s work is not separate from everything else we experience as a human. The people, who seem to love their work and life, express how what they do is deeply connected and rooted in expression of their inner self. Being vulnerable, present, grateful, experiencing meditation, ritual, heartbreak, unease, playfulness, joyfulness, seeming success and failure… all of these things and more, are part of figuring out and being with purpose, so all of these things and more, are each person’s universe.
No more over-thinking for me (that is the effort, at least). I will continue to make connections with others on a soulful level, by connecting with that part of myself and be vulnerable enough to share it, and then be open to receive what is offered as a match to it. Yay! Exciting!
Part of this process for me, is recognizing why something is feeling difficult and then adjusting to make things flow more easily. I’ve consistently recognized moments where I feel the need to define what this project is, so that I could create work based around that idea. I know what my ultimate vision is, but not having certain things look how I imagined, caused pause in content output. There was a barrier created. I got too mental (something I do easily that doesn’t serve me well). I thought I needed to post some meaty piece of writing on the site each time, or it wouldn’t really be the work I had set out to create. An important revelation occurred during a recent conversation Andrea and I had… We can re-imagine and re-negotiate as many times as we want, in life, in business, in relationships, in everything. Our own role in Each Universe can be re-thought without diminishing the work we do, in fact, re-imagining creates expansion, and expansion is what we want.
Andrea posted a quote on our Each Universe Facebook feed that really helped me to understand that in giving something a name, you are attaching an expectation to what that thing is allowed to be.
“Words, no matter whether they are vocalized and made into sounds or remain unspoken as thoughts, can cast an almost hypnotic spell upon you. You easily lose yourself in them, become hypnotized into implicitly believing that when you have attached a word to something, you know what it is. That fact is: you don’t know what it is. You have only covered up the mystery with a label. Everything, a bird, a tree, even a simple stone, and certainly a human being, is ultimately unknowable. This is because it has unfathomable depth…Underneath the surface appearance, everything is not only connected with everything else, but also with the Source of all life out of which it came." ~Eckhart Tolle
Human beings have unfathomable depth. I love this. It sings to me. I unapologetically know this to be true. Each Universe is nothing if not about human beings, and so I am now creating the space for it to include as much depth as is humanly possible.
For me, right now, that means owning the roles of director and curator, finding a web developer willing to work with me to create a more dynamic site to house and be a spring board for all of the inspiring content, finding a sound editor able to create the podcasts I envision (for which, there are already hours of recorded material), posting some writing I’ve been working on about re-imaging education (coming very soon!), and re-affirming the general knowledge that any part of the process in figuring out what I want to spend my time doing is Each Universe. And so, will be shared, even if it seems awkward or scary to do so (and it definitely does sometimes—see Brene Brown’s work on vulnerability- there is a link below the photos).
Things to Remember:
-There is a difference between defining and actualizing. Defining is not necessary.
-Have fun. Be flexible. Be in love.
-People are funny.
Do what you love, and I will continue to do so as well. I’d love to hear from you! If you read this and feel so inclined, I’d be honored to hear any comments, stories, ideas, questions, etc. that come up for you. You can email me at [email protected] or send Each Universe a Facebook message! http://www.facebook.com/eachuniverse
I’ll respond as quickly and thoughtfully as I can. Thanks!
