A light pleased blush happened upon the Earl’s soft cheeks at the lady’s compliment. “Indeed, I do not see how most men could not have friendships with women. They act as if it is a weakness when I do declare many of the most intelligent, cunning and exciting people I have spent my time with are of the female species.” Any person who could and would grow an entire human inside themselves for the sake of the human race earned a great deal of respect from him. And you certainly never saw a man do such a thing. “Do invite any others you feel may derive some fun from the evening ! The more the merrier, in this case at least, is quite the mood !”
The past few days had been harrowing to say the least. His nerves had not been under such prolonged stress since he was a soldier. And that had been many years ago. At least this time he was on home soil and was protecting something much more valuable then a land dispute. Now, however, it was time to find his lovely Bessie so they might settle back in their own home and not leave for a few days. He was getting too old for this brand of excitement.
“I wish it were not a necessity, but I can see the wisdom in the tactic. I just sincerely hope they find whomever is responsible and that he or she is dealt with appropriately.”

“No, no, Mary,” he caught her arms gentle and looked her in the face. “The last thing we must do, my dear, is cause any sort of disruption that will distract them from taking care of everything. Sometimes the best strategy is simple patience.” He ushered her over to a seat and pulled one up next to her for himself. “I assure you, everything shall be done to assure the safety of everyone. And your Henry is important so he shall be well looked after.” He kept his tone completely calm, if somewhat more serious than was usual for him. The eccentric Earl was stepping aside for the composed soldier to resurfaced from his years lying dormant. Current times required the return of side he had long decided he did not need.
As far as rooms to be stuck in, he was satisfied with this one. Plenty of food, rather large, and fireplaces and supplies for them to be lit. Strategically they hit the winning hand, especially as they may, as he suspected would be the case, be stuck her for a little while.
It had been quite the cheerful and festive event, just the type of gathering Edmund had always been most fond of, with music and feasting and a general air of camaraderie. However, there also had seemed to be an almost sinister vibe underlying the event, which he could not help but feel. It turns out he might have done better to heed it as he watched with horror as the kings wine tester fell.
The next few minutes were a bustling blur as men and women, English and foreigners, nobles and common folk alike were hustled around. In the midst of all of it, the Earl caught sight of Mary, the wife of his son, and pushing through the crowds, caught her by the arm. “Come m’dear, I am here,” he assured her softly as they were ushered through the back halls and deposited in the kitchen of all places. “Are you all right ? No bumps or bruises I hope ?”
