No. Snakes Do NOT “Size You Up” To Eat You

Nearly everyone has probably heard of this story; person has a “really big” (the size is never stated) snake, snake stops eating for a few weeks, snakes cuddles person at night, person takes snake to vet, vet says snake is just “getting ready to eat you.”

Anyone who owns a snake could tell you that this story is really stupid.

-Snakes don’t eat very often. They usually eat once every one to two weeks depending on size, age, and species. Some snakes just go off of food for MONTHS at a time and are perfectly fine. A “really big” snake not eating for 1-3 weeks (the story varies) is a normal thing in most reptiles and not a really good reason to take a “really big” snake to the vet. Snakes dont understand the conspect of fasting before a large meal. They’re snakes.

-Snakes just like being warm. A snake escaping its enclosure to cuddle up with its human at night, is only because snakes like warm. They are cold blooded- they can’t regulate their own body temperature. They curl up with warm things just to be warm. News flash: Humans are warm.

-Snakes are really stupid. The story says that the “really big” snake stretches out next to its person to “size them up to see if it could eat them.” This literally makes no sense. There are people out here who think that a snake takes time stretch itself next to any prey to “see if it’ll fit.”

Snake: “Good day, Sir Rabbit. don’t mind me. i just have to lay next to you to see if you can fit in my tum tum. just stay really still. i’m going to eat you in a second. just stay right there while i size you up first”

Rabbit: “why, yes of course. i didn’t have anything planned for the day, Sir Snake. Yes, take your time to size me up, i’ll just stay right here and not run away while you do so. Thank you for not just striking at me right away like all other snakes try to do. Wow, you’re so polite!”

-An actual veterinarian would never lie to someone about their snake’s behaviors. Just another reason why people should stop believing this story is true.

“But snakes are big and evil and scary! They KILL and EAT adorable mice and birds!” Feral/Outdoor cats kill more birds and mice then snakes do. Feral cats have literally killed some songbirds to extinction. Yet, we don’t see them as evil and scary? “But snakes are slimy and gross!” They actualy have a similar texture to basketballs. Basketballs aren’t slimy and gross.

Can we please stop spreading misinformation about snakes?

revolutionary idea: pet ownership is not a human right.

cats scratch. dogs bark. certain rare pets are not adapted to living in a regular domestic setting. if your home is not suited for an animal to express their most basic natural behaviours or your situation makes absolutely predictable traits into dealbreakers, then you should not have that kind of pet. “but i want one” is not an acceptable excuse for owning an animal you can’t provide for.

This includes feeding them the diet they require, not the diet you think they should have because of your own moral beliefs.

and it’s really disappointing to see parents buying a pet for their kid, but having no idea how to properly care for it; mostly pets like hamsters, betta fish, and turtles. impulse buying a pet “because it’s cute” is never a good idea.

just a perfect little photo of my bones and skulls thus far. skull on the left is a raccoon with a flower and bee painted on it, the one on the right is a coyote skull with arrow heads and gems adorned onto it- both of which i got at a local reptile expo. lastly, the partial skeleton is a squirrel that i collected and cleaned myself from my own backyard. Photo is my own, of course.
