Sci-fi short stories are so efficient; they take 15 minutes to read and then you think about them for the next 5 years
Hey guys, what if *puts the most horrifying mindblowing concept into your head with about 15 pages*
Time for some more rambling. IāmĀ not sure if this is something thatās already been touched on in the fandom, but I was rewatching theĀ The First AvengerĀ recently and Iām pretty sure the train was set up by Hydra to be a trap for Buckyā¦Ā
Letās start by looking at the scene where SteveĀ rescues Bucky from the Hydra munitions factory. When Schmidt sees that Captain America has infiltrated the facility,Ā he sets the building to destruct. Zola sees what Schmidt is doing and he freaks the hell out.
Now, Zola is normally a groveling worm when it comes to Schmidt. He knows better than to stand up to him; but thereās something that tips him over the edge hereāif just for a second. Ā
We already know there are a handful of other munitions factories across Europe (which is part of the reason Schmidt can be so casual about blowing up this one). Wanting to save the weapons might be part of Zolaās reaction here, but thatĀ really isnātĀ reason enough for him to risk Schmidtās anger (which can be deadly). At this point in time, thereās nothing in the factory they canāt afford to lose.Ā
Except for Bucky.Ā
Sergeant Barnes is the first one to show signs he mightĀ survive his stint in the isolation ward.Ā Heās the first one to show signs that he might be responding to Zolaās attempts to create his own super soldier. That research is only located in one place, and Schmidt is about to send Zolaās breakthrough up in flames. The moment Zola realizes he canāt stop Schmidt, he makes a break for the lab to try to rescue his notes. Of course thereās no way he can carry Bucky out of there, so he has to make do with what he can get.Ā Ā
In a painful twist of fate, Steve does Zola a favor by saving Bucky.Ā
Take a look at this standoff on the scaffold. Here the audience isĀ meant to focus on Steve and Schmidt going head-to-head for the first time; but pay attention to Bucky and Zola. This is their standoff, too. Follow their line of sight. Theyāre not looking at Steve and/or Schmidt through most of this scene. Theyāre looking at each other, and you can almost see the realization on Zolaās face that his experiment might just be saved.Ā
Donāt you dare look at Bucky like that, you asshole.Ā
Also, can I just point out the look on Buckyās face when he spotsĀ Zola?
If looks could kill.Ā
Not to mention his face when he sees what Schmidt looks like under the mask. Sure, BuckyāsĀ line asking Steve if he has āone of thoseāĀ is meant to be a joke for the audience; but I think BuckyāsĀ experience as a character is a lot different from our experience outside the fourth wall. Heās genuinely scaredāfor Steve, for himself. You can see the trace of tears in his eyes.Ā
Bucky knows something awful has been done to him at the hands of Hydra, and he doesnāt know if heās going to lose his humanity, too.Ā
Jump ahead and Captain America and the Howling Commandos are now laying waste to anything and everything Hydra. Things are looking bad for our villains.
This is an interesting line, because the movie doesnāt exactly tell us what Zolaās mission is. Maybe weāre supposed to think his mission is to make sure the weapons are finished in time to meet Schmidtās timeline for world domination. Or maybe itās to kill Captain America.Ā And maybe those things are part of his job, but as Zola himself says, āI merely develop the weapons. I cannot fire them.ā His primary job is research and development, not tactical planning and defense.Ā
Now that Hydra isĀ up against a super soldier,Ā itās likely that Schmidt isĀ anxious to get his own super soldiers into combat. The easiest and fastest way to complete that research, of course, is to retrieve Sergeant Barnes. (In theory, Zola could use Steve for experimentation if he caught him; but he would have to start the experiment from scratch. Peggy made it clear earlier in the film that it would take themĀ years to find out the formula using Steveās blood. Chances are good the same would apply to Zola.Ā The work on Bucky is already underway, itās Zolaās own handy work,Ā and Buckyās still weak enough to be an easy catch compared to Steve.)
I donāt think itās a coincidence that, directly after Schmidt gives Zola the ultimatum to āfinish his mission,āĀ we cut to the Howling Commandos laying in wait for the train. TheyāreĀ hoping to catch Zola, whose location has somehow been leaked, and it quickly becomes clear that the scummy doctor hasnāt been caught by surprise. In fact, everything indicates that Zola was the one laying in wait for them.Ā Heās surveilling the entire train from a command center and issuing orders to strategically placed Hydra soldiers.
When Steve and Bucky board the car, Zola deliberately separates them.
Divide and conquer is a tried and true tactic, but look at the difference in the opponents sent after them. Steve is given a huge opponent armed to the back teeth with a Tesseract energy gun. But Bucky? Bucky faces off against one traditionally-armed guard. (EDIT: In a subsequent viewing I noticed he actually faces off against two guards, but the second one is barely seen and is removed from the equation fairly quickly.)
Why wasnāt that guard given an energy weapon too? My guess would be because Zola didnāt want his guinea pig harmed too badly. Bullet wounds can heal, but disintegration is forever.Ā
It might also be telling that when Steve and Bucky are back in the same compartment together, Zola screams ākill himā not ākill them.ā Itās up for debate who Zola meant for the guard to target; but since he was initially sent after Steve,Ā itās my assumption thatās who Zola meant for him to shoot. Ā Ā Ā
As we all know, the plan goes horribly awry on both sides and Bucky falls to his seeming death. Zola is captured and, when Colonel Philips tells him that āthe last guy you cost us was Captain Rogerās closest friend,āĀ Zola barely acknowledges it with a creeptacular grin.Ā
He knows. He knows whatever he did to Bucky would keep him alive. And, as it turns out, even as a captive Zola will gain the means to finish his little experiment.Ā
Fucker.Ā
if you want to actually start to end homelessness, you need to give homeless people unconditional homes, including when we use them to do drugs or sit around drinking. either housing is unconditional or it isnāt
someone sitting at home alone, an active alcoholic, squandering your charity, drinking all day is better situation than a street homeless alcoholic. someone using drugs in your charity house is better than them doing the same w no shelter
most of you would not like most street homeless people, I definitely donāt and didnāt when I was street homeless. for every one person who uses unconditional shelter to turn themselves around, someone else will do jack shit and very slowly, if ever, work through the issues that made them homeless, will maybe never be able to live independently. still better than street homelessness, still worth doing. ultimately either you believe that shelter should be universal or you donāt
homeless people actually canāt be rehabilitated if you want to end homelessness. we either affirm the right to shelter for the worst drunken, lying, filthy, cheating, self destructive homeless people that exist, genuinely irredeemable wankers, or we concede that shelter is not a right
This post is the distilled essence of everything I believe in.

And boy are they clumsy
Hi, these bees are babies! Theyāre not clumsy at all, this is what is called orientation flights. After birth and before beginning their careers as foragers (as all Honey bees cycle through all the jobs in the Hive throughout their lifespan), Honey bees take short flights back and forth, to and from the Hive, to orient themselves with their wings and their home so they can learn its location and how to get back home after foraging! Everyone has to learn, these are just smol little baby turkeys. Bees use the angle of the sun for location so adults have a better and more direct sense of location than any human
IM SO PLEASED TO LEARN THIS!!!
They are just!!! Student drivers!!! š

Emergency cleaning: Unfuck your whole house in the shortest time possible
So, your landlord/parents/home inspector/favorite movie star is dropping by, and your place is a disaster. You donāt have much time to clean it up. Youāre in emergency mode. Letās get started.
Donāt panic. Panic leads to fear, fear leads to procrastination, procrastination leads to the dark side. You can do this, but you have to stay calm.
Unlike maintenance cleaning, weāre not looking to completely unfuck one space at a time. Instead, we want to decrease the overall mess in stages, spread evenly across the whole area that weāre concerned about. If you think your home is at Level 10 filth, we want to bring the whole thing down to a Level 9, and then down from there. One really clean spot in an otherwise messy home is not going to be helpful here.
Get prepared. Youāll want to shut the computer down (or turn the modem off if you need your computer to play music). Trust me. Get your music going. Gather up trash bags, your vacuum and mop, some rags or paper towel, sponges, and other cleaning supplies. Use what you have on hand. Donāt get distracted running to the store and spending an hour browsing cleaning supplies. A multi-purpose cleaning concentrate or a jug of vinegar will be just fine.
Breaks are very important. Depending on your time constraints, work in 20/10s (20 minutes working, 10-minute break) or 45/15s. But take breaks because otherwise youāre marathoning, and marathon cleaning is no oneās friend. Keep hydrated, donāt forget to eat, and check in with yourself frequently to make sure youāre physically doing OK.
Make your bed. This will be your home base if you get overwhelmed or need somewhere clear to take a break.
Start with the garbage. Going from room to room, throw out anything that is obvious trash. Once you fill a bag, take it out. Repeat as many times as necessary.
Move on to dishes. Gather the dishes from all over your house and bring them to the kitchen. If you can, start them soaking in a sink of hot, soapy water or start loading the dishwasher. After the dishes are all in one place, spend one 20/10 getting started getting them under control.
Now itās time for your flat surfaces. Countertops, tables, dresser tops, etc. Clear them off and wipe them down. Donāt get distracted in too much sorting and organizing. Weāre in crisis mode here. There will be time to get in-depth once this is all done. The same applies to cabinets and closets. Unless you have reason to believe people will be opening closed doors, leave these alone for now.
Attack the floordrobe and shoe pile. Get your clothes either put away or in the hamper. Start a load of laundry if you need to, but keep in mind that laundry and dishes have three steps: wash, dry, and put it away, goddammit!
Get random stuff up off the floors. If something is trash-worthy, throw it away now rather than just move it around a bunch of times. Otherwise, put stuff where it belongs.
Take another 20/10 or 45/15 to catch up on more dishes, if needed.
Head into the bathroom. Pour some cleaner in the toilet bowl, fill the sink with hot water and cleaner, and either spray the tub and shower with cleaner, or fill the tub up with some hot water and add cleaner and let it soak. Put everything away thatās out and shouldnāt be, clean the mirror, counters, and toilet seat. Sweep or dry mop the floor. Wipe down the sink and tub/shower, and give the toilet bowl a scrub. Mop the floor.
Sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
Vacuum everything you can, and sweep everything you canāt.
Walk outside of your house (donāt lock yourself out, please). Walk back in and see what catches your eye first. Go and deal with that.
If youāre being inspected or your landlord is coming in for repairs, spend time on whatever area theyāll be focusing on.
Give the whole place one more once-over and pay attention to anything youāve missed so far.
Itās an old trick, but if your place is a little funky-smelling, put a pan of water on the stove on low heat and add some citrus or cinnamon or vanilla. Donāt leave it unattended or forget about it.
Take a shower, put on something clean, and eat something.
You can do this. Itās overwhelming, yes, but it is not impossible. You just need to do it. You have a list. You have directions. You have a whole bunch of Internet strangers who have been there before and who are cheering you on. You can do this, but you need to get started.
Why are you still here? GO. START. NOW.
the number of times in my past that I desperately wanted/needed someone to sit me down and tell me this stuff. I will never get back the hours and hours lost to headless-chicken mode, but itās nice to know that in the last year Iāve learned so many coping mechanisms :D
So much of paleontology is "what did this beaked thing eat?" And then your best guess for years turns out to be so so so wrong.
Like Gastornis was thought to be a carnivore for decades and then carbon isotopes were like, "nah this thing was basically a giant goose honk honk".
Art by Ja Chirinos
Oviraptor was thought to be an egg eater, then much ink was spilled about whether it ate mollusks, and now it's thought to be an omnivore, but mostly a fruit/seed eater like a parrot.
Somehow this Adobe Stock image is the only art of an Oviraptor eating plants I can find. How is that?
And even birds with some teeth are getting in on these dietary mysteries.
Longipteryx was first thought to be a kingfisher-like hunter of aquatic prey, but it has since been found with seed contents in its guts, making it another surprise frugivore.

California is installing zero-emission electric appliances and energy-saving upgrades at no cost to low-income households across the state u
Under the Equitable Building Decarbonization Program, California is providing no-cost, zero-emissions appliances like induction stoves and heat pumps to low-income households. The program covers single family, multifamily, and mobile homes and also include other efficiency upgrades like smart thermostats, LED lighting, and better duct sealing and insulation.
Worth noting, is that these appliances improve not only energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, but are also cheaper to operate and significantly improve indoor air quality.
