roald dahl was antisemitic and misogynistic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife (and was racist as well as antisemitic!). hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think they bleed into the books so uh keep an eye out for that
the difference between these old white guys and jk rowling is that the former group is all dead. jk rowling is alive and using your money to oppress trans people
forget everything anyone has ever told you on the matter the truest marker of adulthood is starting to hear the siren call of high quality kitchenware
to be clear you SHOULD buy that cast iron pan and you SHOULD buy that knife set and you SHOULD buy that fancy rice cooker and you SHOULD buy that novelty mug. high quality kitchenware is always worth it you’re literally gonna be using that almost every day
Recently turned 30 and got very giddy over finally getting a decent 4-slot toaster.
Mother and Daughters
The late horticulturalist and her daughters shortly before she succumbed to the plague.
Originally from Mondbrunn, the horticulturist and her husband opened a florist on the small island of Wyllfall Haven and had their daughters. After her death, her daughters continued her work.

Kython Merchants
An isolationist theocracy that lives in interconnected subterranean cities in the Kythonic Mountain Range, the Kythons are a mystery to most Fae.
The Kythons have a rigid caste system, and only men from the merchant caste (and occasionally the warrior and priest castes) are permitted to leave the mountains in order to trade their precious metals, enchanted jewelry, and magick-conducting crystals in exchange for food.
Believing sunlight is a corrupting force that will turn them away from their god, Kamidore, Kythons must cover themselves in heavy robes and gold or brass armour to ward off the magic of the Sun God.

as seen in guillermo del toro’s frankenstein, the mid-19th-century fisk coffin, also known as the fisk metallic burial case, featured an airtight seal and cast-iron construction designed to slow decay and preserve the body for viewing and long-distance transportation. developed by almond dunbar fisk in 1848, these coffins were marketed as sanitary, modern, and protective against grave robbers. their distinctive anthropoid (body-shaped) form, glass viewing plate, and metal shell reflected both victorian fascination with death and the growing influence of medical science at the time.

Here’s the opposite story, though. With apologies because I don’t have the book in front of me, so I may get some details wrong, but I read this “Irena’s Children“ by Tilar J. Mazzeo.
Irena lived in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation, and dedicated her life to rescuing Jewish children from the Ghetto, and her story is complicated in a lot of ways but - well, this story isn’t actually about Irena, per se.
It’s about a bus driver.
It’s about a day when she’s traveling across town by bus with a very young Jewish child, and partway to their destination the child looks up and asks a question - in Yiddish. and the whole bus goes quiet, because everyone knows what that means. And Irena thinks, okay, we’re going to die here today.
And she’s running through her options - all of them bad - and suddenly the bus stops, and the bus driver announces that there’s been a mechanical failure and the bus needs to return to the depot immediately. Everyone off, please.
And she stands and goes to get off the bus and the driver says - not you two. Sit down. So she sits down as everyone else leaves, because, well, what else is she going to do? the options are all still bad, at this point.
and when the bus is empty the bus driver says,
“Where do you need to go?”
And then he drives them as close to their destination as he can, and lets them off, and drives away. And Irena lives, and the kid lives, and they never cross paths again.
So a janitor got three people killed, and a bus driver saved two lives - not to mention all the other lives indirectly saved because Irena was able to continue her work.
I think about that almost every day now, to be honest.
We can’t all be Irena. I couldn’t be Irena. She was in a unique place with very specific skills and connections that let her do what she did. I am just one mentally ill librarian. I can’t be her. But - I can be the bus driver. Or I could be the janitor. Because it doesn’t matter what your job is. It doesn’t matter who you are. In a world like this, every single one of us has the opportunity to do massive harm or massive good. We can save lives or end them.
And that’s scary. but it’s also very comforting? at least for me. Because at the end of the day it means this: no matter of how small and helpless and unimportant you feel, you’re never powerless in the face of great evil.
You can choose to be the bus driver.
One thing i wish both drs and some other disabled people would stop saying that "pain cant kill you" bc it can. Literally, just too much untreated pain can stress ur body out so bad you have a heart attack or stroke or other potentially lethal medical event. And its 100% completely preventable, but opiod hysteria is so bad drs are giving people NSAIDs only for spinal surgery (real thing, i spoke to this person on twitter/X)
Pain kills. Stop demonizing pain medication
I suffer from chronic necrotic pain from oxygen deprivation in my left leg caused by chronic blood clots. I also deal with inflammation, bruising, cysts, and ruptured capillaries. Due to a damaged valve in my left knee, I have blood reflux, causing my blood to flow backwards and pool in my leg. Standing for more than three minutes causes my feet to turn purple and blood to drain from my head. I have low blood pressure, and standing makes it steadily drop until I will inevitably faint. (This has been tested by an internal medicine specialist)
I'm allergic to Tylenol.
For years, my doctor would only prescribe me Ibuprofen. Because he didn't want me to get addicted to an opioid, and I "look fine."
Well, years of high doses of NSAIDs caused thinning of my stomach lining, ulcers, internal bleeding and eventually a heart attack in my twenties.
Only then did the ER doctor prescribe me Tramadol to mitigate my suffering. My GP reluctantly refills this prescription, but will not give me a standing prescription or increase my dose. He won't refill my prescription until I'm out of pills, out of concern that I'll misuse them. This inevitably causes days when I have to go without pain relief while waiting for the prescription to be processed and the pharmacy to prepare my medication. (since pharmacies are only allowed to stock a minimal amount of opioids on site)
Even though I've been in pain for twelve years, my condition is inoperable, and the vascular surgeon said it will only worsen with age and likely require amputation by the time I'm 50, my GP keeps me on a very low dose of painkillers and treats me like an addict whenever I ask for a renewal on my prescription.
The fear of the Opioid Epidemic has caused such a ridiculous overcorrection that disabled people like me have to fight tooth and nail to get minimal relief.
(Also, I am Canadian, this isn't just a US problem, and while nearly all my healthcare is free, I still have to pay $50 for each bottle of pills that I rely on to fulfill my responsibilities as a mother. MOst Opioids aren't covered by our universal healthcare to dissuade people from over-reliance. In reality, this punishes disabled low-income people)
My pain has nearly killed me, and I still struggle to get a low dose of the medication I need due to bias and moral panic.
This.
Someone finally explained it
i wish you guys could read the amazing fic i haven't written and probably will never write, it's fire

US defaultism is insane yesterday l said on a discord server “it’s winter but I’m not cold. whyyy...” and they responded “dude it’s summer. it’s july” and then proceeded to DOUBLE DOWN when I explained that they were thinking of the wrong hemisphere
I also mentioned wanting to move down south to a colder area of the country and a DIFFERENT PERSON told me “south? nah, that’s hotter. move up north if you want to be cold. down south you’re closer to the equator, so it’s hotter.” haha ohh okay thanks. what
a different DIFFERENT person went “wait the southern hemisphere has a different season order???” how do you go 21 years of life without knowing how your own planet works…. I don’t understand………. dude… save me
important context. all three of these interactions occured within 2 minutes. I don’t understand
wait until she finds out we have cities too. christ

People really don't know much about other hemispheres and climates.
My friend from Australia asked if Canada gets warm enough to grow cherry blossoms, as though we don't have a similar climate to Japan?? (For those who don't know, Southern Canada is around the same latitude as the UK) Sure, our winters are intense (so are Japan's), but the summers in southwestern British Columbia get into the low to mid-30s (Celsius)
My friend from Singapore asked me if I was safe when I got a half metre of snow.
I'm not much better. Imagine my surprise when I found out the oceans around Sydney are like 15-20°C !! (Water where I'm from is like 10°C even in summer)
