Some days ago I climbed to Kinsa Cocha, some lakes at 4400 meters altitude, above Pisac with Thomas, Julian, Ana Maria and Adriana, 2 friends from Argentina. We walked around the lakes which always proves to be quite a challenge for everyone in the group, but a great feat once you've made it. Thomas and I took a swim in the crystal clear upper lake. As you can see from these photos, it wasn't warm, but I stayed in nearly 5 minutes, I just felt great in there. On the way back down we saw this white baby llama, just a few days old crouching near a rock on it's own. We stopped to look at it and suddenly it got up on it's new legs and started to come down the mountain towards us. Thomas, Adriana and I were shocked, we couldn't believe or understand why this tiny white thing was coming to us. The little girl just came right up to me and started looking for milk and cuddling, so I picked her up and she just got super happy. We just stood there with her for a while, still shocked and feeling really blessed. We looked around for a bit for the mother, but the herd of llamas was further away and no llama was coming. The baby had a bit of a deformation at it's mouth and we wondered if it had been abandoned. I put it down and started walking and she followed us for a while on her wobbly feet. After a few minutes we looked back and saw this epic tall llama coming towards us. One we had noticed earlier on the trail. It was so tall we had thought it must be the leader male of the herd. But we realised it must be the baby's mother. Usually llamas are quite shy, or they can spit at you if you touch their babies or annoy them. She came close to us, but didn't look angry at all and just walked along for a minute above us. We talked to the baby and encouraged her to go to the mother, but at first she just stayed close to me and didn't want to go. Eventually she did though and started nursing, so we walked on. Julian and Ana Maria were ahead of us on the trail, so we could just share these photos with them while we were having a wonderful quinoa soup and potatos at Cezar's hour and playing with baby Norma his daughter. Thanks to Thomas for taking photos! Soon I'll get the swimming photos from Julian! Magic often happens in the Andes but for me Kinsa Cocha is a very special place. I receive messages each time I go there.

I received a present of real Thai red curry past from Diane upon her return from Asia. What a treat! Today I made spicy red curry and coconut soup with carrots, green beans, red peppers, onion and noodles.
I finally made great healthy bread! I am just learning about baking bread and have been making Josefin's great crusty white bread recipe. It's extremely tasty, but not healthy at all. Thi time I bought "7 harinas" a flour made of 7 different grains in the market. The dough was large so I first baked half of it but it didn't turn out good at all, it was just like a dry pancake and fell to pieces. For the second half I mixed in some more wheat flour to help the yeast and kneaded the dough and let it sit for another hour. What came out was an amazingly rich, moist and crusty bread with a sour nutty taste, perfect! Contiene: Maca, Kiwicha, Soya, Trigo, Agongoli, Avenua, Quinua, levadura, sal, agua
here in Cusco's San Pedro market you can buy fresh maca root. I don't much like the taste of the powder. A wise friend told me that you can cook the fresh root like a carrot or potato and eat it directly. I bought 1kg of root, peeled it and steamed it a bit. It had a great sweet taste with a mix of something like radish and something astringent like artichoke. It was so tasty I ate the roots without any salt or sauce, just with some pieces of old andean cheese. It was kind of like parsnips, or turnips or little baby potatos with a lot more flavour.

one big beet that came out of our garden at Paz y Luz! It was so beautiful and tasty, I was planning to cook something but finally ended up eating it raw, just sliced up with a vegetable peeler.
