The Book Thief → Travelling Book Project Edition 

In March 2014 I sent out this book, along with two others, to be read and written in by people all over Australia. This was the result. It is beautiful and wonderful and I will be forever grateful to everyone who participated. This is my favourite copy of The Book Thief now.

I was so mad yesterday and I didn't think I'd ever recover until I came to school this morning and a person who dressed in unattractive plain grey and white clothes gave me a cheesecake.

I was in a nice place for a brief moment.

Captain’s Log #1

Finding someone who has a book curled up under their noses is hard. Once you find them you’re dying to get to know them. You make scenarios in which you’re having a nice long conversation about books, you’re also thinking about borrowing each other’s books and discussing it once you finish, and all of the things you can think of.

But, once you find someone who reads, they probably not like you.

I met this person who reads, and we didn’t really strike up a conversation about books but yes, we borrowed each other’s books. I gave this person a book that I like–I love. I love that book because the main character is what I picture myself when I’m old and all. The person who I loaned that book said that the whole book is just about the main character, and I said–to myself, “of course it’s about him, the title itself says that. And what do you expect to an old man who lives by himself and doesn’t know what to do after her wife, the only person in his life, died? He’s not Anne Shirley or something.” And she said that she skipped every odd numbers chapters because the plot is back and forth from the current time and the flashbacks and she said it was boring and she knew what was coming. God, I hate that. She offended my dear author. Or was she saying a book that I consider “my favourite book” is not so good? Or was it her who’s just not that good?

How little thing or probably nothing can lead to a big catastrophe.

You know how things lead into other things, and you don’t have any idea what things you caused because YOU WERE HAVING FUN.

Please I know you have a brain under those hair, and you have heart somewhere, so please think before you do something. Or feel. You don’t know what a person is capable or not capable of. You don’t know that he has this very sensitive feeling, or she is dying to save her friendship, or she has appointment with a psychiatrist every once in a week because of all the people she consider friends didn’t consider the same. And you just ruined it because you don’t know, you were just having fun, and you are a good-for-nothing.

So everybody’s having fun?
