“Hah, what is there to rehearse though?” Akarias chuckled and shrugged before taking her arm as well. “It’s all pretty straight forward. I am the King. Andun will be wedding us. You’re the bride. The roles are hard to mix up. And if I don’t even get to see you in your dress early, whats the point?” He smirked at her playfully as they all headed inside.
“Well back home, weddings can be pretty big and complicated. Yeah, sure it’s hard to confuse our roles as the bride and groom, but the bride usually has like a Maid of Honor and some bridesmaids. The groom has a Best Man and some other groomsmen.” She shrugged. “But having an uncomplicated wedding would be kind of nice.” Then she smirked. “But as for seeing my in my dress early…it’s a tradition. That and why in the world would you want to spoil the surprise of seeing how pretty I’ll look? That’s the point of not seeing the bride before the wedding.”Â
“Would the groom be the Best Man?” Akarias laughed. “The wedding may be big, but we didn’t have much complicated planned. You can tell us about some of these other traditions of yours if you want to include them though. Heh, I guess you an keep your dress a secret though if you want. Though surprise or not, I don’t see how any clothes can make you any more beautiful.” he winked at her slyly. She heard Andun chuckle at the joke from where he walked behind the with Galia.

“Do I?” Andun said with a small smirk. “Then clearly I’ve done something right.” He straightened up again and looked over to see Akarias just shaking his head.
“Anyway,” Akarias picked up the conversation again. “Things are just about ready for the wedding. You have a couple days to settle in with your things before the wedding will be held. You can stay in a guest room until then, but we can start moving your things into my room. What do you mean by rehearse though?” He asked, confused, as they started walking back toward the castle.
Amaya laughed. “Surely you don’t expect us to just wing it through the ceremony. For weddings and coronations, there is usually some kind of run through to be sure everyone knows what their roles are and what they are supposed to do. I mean, you have to have some kind of organization for everyone. Otherwise, it’ll be a huge clusterfuck.” She threaded her arm through his. “And you don’t get to see me in the dress until the big day. In my land, it’s considered bad luck for the groom to view the bride in her dress before the wedding.”Â
“Hah, what is there to rehearse though?” Akarias chuckled and shrugged before taking her arm as well. “It’s all pretty straight forward. I am the King. Andun will be wedding us. You’re the bride. “Of course!” Akarias smiled and bowed to Galia. “I’m grateful to Amaya for coming to stay with me here, so anything I can do to make her more comfortable here, I’m happy to do. I’m glad you were willing to leave your home and come with her as well. Thank you, Galia.”
“Yes, thank you for coming, miss Galia.” Andun’s deep voice rumbled as he smiled at her and leaned in to kiss her hand. “And Amaya’s description seems pretty accurate in my opinion.”
“Oh come on!” Akarias laughed. “You can’t tease me and then go and do something like that!”
Amaya laughed as well. She had not yet had a chance to get to know Andun very well since he was tied up with her parents and Aldar during the last visit. She glanced over at Galia whose cheeks were colored pink.Â
“You flatter me,” she said, looking up at him timidly.Â
Amaya’s personal belongings were being unloaded from her ship, and servants from the castle began moving them toward Amaya’s new home. She looked up at Akarias. “Now that we have reunited, what is to be done in the next few days? I expect we will need to rehearse for the wedding and the coronation?”Â
“Do I?” Andun said with a small smirk. “Then clearly I’ve done something right.” He straightened up again and looked over to see Akarias just shaking his head.

Akarias stared at Amaya as she approached, stunned at her appearance as a smile worked it’s way across his face. After a moment he came back to himself and managed, “Yes, of course I did! You look beautiful.” He pulled her into a soft hug for a moment before releasing her.
“He’s been restless ever since you left.” Andun stood at Akarias’ side, in a rich brown cloak, smiling at the pair as he towered over them.
“You’re not supposed to tell her that,” Akaras grumbled to his friend, before turning his smile back to Amaya. “And is this the woman Galia, you mentioned?” He asked her, looking past her to Galia. “I look forward to meeting my bride’s friend.
Amaya found herself against Akarias’ thick chest as he embraced her. Her mall hands rested on his chest as she enjoyed the gentle warmth of his embrace. She gazed up at him, touched that he actually had missed her, even though they had known one another for only a few weeks.  Â
When Akarias let go of her, she grinned at Andun and arched her eyebrow. “Has he now?”Â
Galia approached as Akarias spoke of her. “And I look forward to meeting my lady’s soon-to-be-husband.” She curtsied and bowed. “Your Majesty.” She stood and smirked at him. “You should know that she has spoken of you nearly every day since she returned to our homeland.
The redhead bumped Galia’s arm and frowned at her. “You did not have to tell him that. Also, you don’t have to be so formal,” Amaya said. “You will quickly find as I have that they – or we – are not as formal here as with the kingdoms of the mainland.” She glanced at Akarias. “This is my kind and beloved Lady-in-Waiting, Galia.” She smiled at her friend. “She is as intelligent as she is beautiful.”Â
Galia shook her head at Amaya though she allowed a flattered smile to spread. “Quit that. I’ve no time for your antics.”Â
And Galia was beautiful. She stood at average height – just slightly shorter than Amaya – with a slender body, and the fabric of her dark blue dress stood out against her warm, terra cotta skin. Her short, dark chestnut hair was worn in soft curls around her face, and her eyes were dark umber.
She offered a dazzling smile at Akarias. “I really must express my gratitude at being allowed to stay by Amaya’s side. I have been with her since we were children.”Â
“Of course!” Akarias smiled and bowed to Galia. “I’m grateful to Amaya for coming to stay with me here, so anything I can do to make her more comfortable here, I’m happy to do. I’m glad you were willing to leave your home and come with her as well. Thank you, Galia.”

On his end, Akarias had a lot to prepare as well. The first thing he did was to inform the castle staff he would be making an announcement in the town square the next day, knowing they would spread the news amongst the city and enough people would know.
In the mean time, he began his other preparations. He had one of the guest rooms set aside for Amaya’s assistant, Galia, and another cleared out some to be Amaya’s private room, for her art and music and other things.
And personally, he began rearranging his own bedroom to make room for another occupant.
The next day he made his way to the small stage arrange at the edge of the town square to find the crowd gathered, as expected. He stood tall on the stage and made sure he had the crowd’s full attention before he spoke.
“Good to see you all managed to find your way here today,” he began, projecting his voice across the courtyard. “I don’t want to take too much of your time, so I’ll get right to it. I’m getting married!” There was a moment of confusion, but much of the crowd began cheering. He grinned, glad to see them happy for him. “Thank you! Thank you!” he waited a moment for the crowd to settle down. “She isn’t from here, so I’m gonna ask you to give her some time and help her settle in. But if you like me, I think you’ll like her.” The crowd cheered again and he laughed.
“Now, the wedding will be public in a little over a week so you’ll all have a chance to see her. I hope you look forward to it. Now, on to some other news…” With the main announcement out of the way, he went on to talk about some other things you needed to discuss with the people, including asking for volunteers for the airship project.
Once that was done, he returned to the castle. He didn’t have as much to prepare as Amaya throughout the week, but he monitored the preparation of the rooms for Amaya, and made sure the wedding organizing the he had arranged with Andun and Elanor were proceeding as planned. Aside from that, all he could do was wait, impatiently, working out and training more than usual in his free time to ease the tension.
Finally, the day came and he put on his best robe, red with gold accents and fire designs stitched throughout it, to go meet the airship as Amaya returned with her family and guests.
Galia sat behind Amaya in their quarters on the airship and brushed Amaya’s long, lovely red hair. She pulled back Amaya’s hair halfway and plaited it into braids that came together at the back of her head. Then she braided separate braids over each of Amaya’s ears and fastened those at the ends. The rest of Amaya’s long hair remained free, and Galia finished the style by placing silver hair cuffs into Amaya’s braids.Â
She smiled at her friend. “You are going to look absolutely ravishing for your waiting fiancĂ©.”Â
“I hope so. I wonder what he’s been doing while I’ve been gone.”Â
The redhead shrugged off her mint-colored kimono robe and stood before her full length mirror naked. Galia brought Amaya’s periwinkle blue dress to her and unzipped the back before holding it out to Amaya. The redhead took it and pulled it over her body, and Galia zipped up the back. The dress had a plunging neckline that showed off her ample chest nicely, and the tulle skirt was covered in silver glimmering designs. This dress actually paled in comparison to what she wanted to wear to greet Akarias, but her mother had an absolute meltdown and made her choose something a little more modest.Â
“You look absolutely beautiful,” Galia remarked. “He will have a hard time keeping his hands to himself.”Â
Amaya giggled. “We will be wed in a few days, so he will have no choice but to restrain himself.”Â
“You are an absolute tease,” Galia joked. She clasped a silver chain with a fire opal pendant around Amaya’s neck. “Shame on you.”Â
Amaya smirked. “We may not know each other well, but he at least knows what to expect. Besides, it won’t be easy for me, either, you know.”
Once the airship arrived at her new home, Amaya disembarked, escorted by her parents and Galia following close behind. She saw Akarias already waiting for her at the entrance to the castle courtyard and her smile spread as she approached him.Â
“You look handsome,” she said as she reached for his hands. Her green eyes looked up at him. She could not explain it, but she was actually very glad to see him. “Did ya miss me?”

Part of Amaya hated to leave, even if it was for a week. But she had to return home and start creating a guest list with her mother. She didn’t really want a whole lot of people she did not know in attendance; just her closest friends and her family.Â
There was much to be done while she was back. She was measured for a dress, and she chose a simple halter top gown that fit her figure nicely but with a light, flowing skirt. Her mother had insisted the dress be white since this was the traditional color of a bride in her land. The white represented purity and virtue, though Amaya was the farthest thing from pure.Â
The next thing that needed to be done was to pack her belongings – her clothes, art supplies, sheet music, books, and her piano. She had sat down with Galia and announced the news to her.Â
“You’re really going through with it?” she said, almost disbelieving what she had heard. Galia knew how staunchly Amaya was against an arranged marriage. She smiled. “He really must be someone you can see yourself with.”Â
“Akarias and I are a lot alike,” Amaya had said. “I have to admit that I did not expect that. I figured he’d be just like the other pompous jackasses my parents have tried to set me up with. But this one is different. He values me as an equal and not as property as many men here on the mainland would.”Â
Galia smiled. “From what else you have told me, he sounds like a wonderful person.”Â
“Oh, yes he is. And he is hot as hell, too.”Â
“Handsome and kind? A rare combination. Perhaps you really did hit the jackpot.”
“I think…I think maybe I have.” Amaya reached for Galia’s hand. “Will you be coming with me?”Â
“Of course I will come. I love you too dearly to let you go.”Â
Amaya hugged Galia and kissed her cheek. “I’m so glad. You are my sweetest friend and confidante. You have no idea how much this means to me.”Â
At the end of the week, she set back toward her new home. As her own homeland shrank on the horizon, Amaya could not help but feel bittersweet. This new land of hers would be so far away from everything she had ever known and everyone she loved, and it was much different than what she was used to. However, she was glad that she would be living somewhere warm as her own land was cooler than her new home. But it was still that: home.
On his end, Akarias had a lot to prepare as well. The first thing he did was to inform the castle staff he would be making an announcement in the town square the next day, knowing they would spread the news amongst the city and enough people would know.

“Well if you want a library or art room we can definitely do that!” Akarias said with a smile. “Like I said, this place is bigger than I really need. So yeah, I think we got some good ideas what to work on while you’re gone then.” He nodded, and waved to Elanor as she left. Then he turned back to Amaya as she took his arm. “So…when you say it’s time to turn in for the night…?” He left the question open, not wanting to pressure her, but given how she took his arm as she said it…he thought it was fair to ask at least.
Amaya blinked. Had he thought…? Then she giggled a little, let go of his arm, and faced him.Â
“Oh, well, I had figured you were going to walk me back to my room. I guess you thought I meant for us to turn in together.” She moved so that she stood toe to toe with him. “As much as I would really enjoy that, I think it would be better if we just waited until we get married.” She reached up and kissed him on his lips and rested her hands on his chest. A devious smirk spread across her lips. “Trust me, the wait will be very worth it.”Â
He chuckled nervously, resting his hands on her hips. “I’m sure it will...For now, I guess I can walk you back to your room then, if that's what you wanted?” He slipped his arm through hers again.

Akarias sighed and nodded thoughtfully. “I guess it is pretty quick, and we don’t really know each other that well yet. Though…if I didn’t rush into things without thinking, I wouldn’t be king!” He chuckled nervously. “I’m willing to give it a shot anyway, if you are, but I get it if you want your own space too.”
“I believe that it is healthy to have it both ways,” Elanor said thoughtfully. “When two people are married, you do not cease to be exactly who you are, nor do you give up the things you once enjoyed doing or creating for the sake of the other person. For example, I share the bedroom with my husband, but I have a room where I sew quilts and embroider. You are two different people who build one life together. You learn to appreciate one another’s talents and ideally, you help improve one another’s weaknesses. You become two pieces of a puzzle that just fit. Of course, I’ve seen marriages where the couple mixes like oil and water, but for the most part, I’ve seen many work out as long as each person is willing to communicate, compromise, and trust one another.”
Amaya took in her mother’s words carefully. Her parents had been an arranged marriage, and it seemed to have worked out well for them in the end. Amaya had four brothers and she did not often see her parents disagree. When they did, it was never in front of Amaya and her siblings.Â
The redhead glanced up at Akarias. He seemed sincere in wanting to work things out however he could to make it happy for both of them. She offered a slight smile.Â
“Well, we have agreed that we are both willing to give it a shot. I don’t mind to share this room with you. I just want a space where I can read my books and create art.”
Evelyn smiled a bit. “Well, now that I have an idea of what we will need to send with Amaya, I think it is time to retire to my room.”Â
The redhead nodded but she took Akarias’ arm. “Yes, I think it’s time to turn in for the night.”Â
“Well if you want a library or art room we can definitely do that!” Akarias said with a smile. “Like I said, this place is bigger than I really need. “An archer and an artist?” Akarias said, crossing his arms and smiling. “Impressive. And just when I thought you couldn’t get more talented. Could definitely make some room for that stuff. Bringing a piano in here could get a little crowded, but we could also put that in the entry way, or somewhere else. Don’t need to stuff all your stuff just in the bedroom. And you could uh…just have your own room if you want.” His smile fell a bit. “I just thought if we were getting married we’d share a room. Didn’t know most other royals don’t. Everyone here who is married tends to a share a room and I didn’t see why a King should be any different.”
“Several monarchs have arranged marriages like we are about to have,” Amaya said. “I guess at some point if they fall in love the queen will share with her king. I just…wasn’t sure how you wanted to handle that since…it’s so sudden.”
“I think Amaya’s concerned about imposing on you,” Elanor said sagely. “She has a point. This will happen quickly, and neither of you are used to living with someone else. I can tell you from experience that adjusting to someone else can be challenging. You might have different sleeping habits, living habits, and you both will be used to doing things your own ways, and you will have to compromise. Sometimes that can be a challenge, even for a king.”Â
Her mother always seemed to know how to put what Amaya wanted to say and what she thought diplomatically. And as someone who was in an arranged marriage herself, she knew what they both were about to go through.Â
She noticed that the smile seemed to fall from Akarias’ face, and she offered a reassuring look. “If you want me to share with you, Akarias, I will. Just like what my mother said, I just…didn’t want you to be overwhelmed.”Â
Akarias sighed and nodded thoughtfully. “I guess it is pretty quick, and we don’t really know each other that well yet. Though...if I didn’t rush into things without thinking, I wouldn’t be king!” He chuckled nervously. “I’m willing to give it a shot anyway, if you are, but I get it if you want your own space too.”

“Oh, yeah, you can come with us if you want I guess,” Akarias said, a little nervous at the sour look Amaya gave him. He wasn’t sure why she was annoyed.
Akarias, Andun and Aldar all helped clear the table and collect their dishes, taking them to the kitchen before Akarias led the two women upstairs to show them his room. They recognized the route up the grand staircase and a few turns to the hallway it was in, as his bedroom was only a few doors down from theirs.
As he opened the door, they could tell his room was much the same as the guest chambers they had been given as well, aside from his personal touches. It was the same size and shape, with stone walls and floor like theirs, and it had the same large bed against one wall, a wide open floor in the center of the room, and furniture along the outside. The far wall had a dresser with a mirror above it, and a wardrobe a little further down, just like their rooms. However, his room also had a few extra things.
The wall to the left of the entrance had a few halberds mounted in a line, of different designs, and a few mannequins with different robes and armor alongside them. There was also a table to one side with some strange lumps of metal on a polished stone surface. Completing the look was some red and gold banners and tapestries on the walls to add some color.
“So uh…this is my room!” He looked at the two, nervously. “Like I said, we can make some changes, as I realize it is…a little unsuited for her right now.”
Akarias’ room wasn’t much different from her room, Amaya noticed. She glanced around and noticed the halberds on the wall. “Think we can make room for my bow and quiver?”Â
“Ah, yes,” Elanor began, “Amaya is a skilled archer. She’s won several competitions back home.”
“I suppose I’m not too bad,” Amaya replied.Â
“Oh, don’t be so modest,” Elanor said. “You have several trophies and your skill garnered plenty of attention.”Â
“Well, I suppose,” she said, “But I guess now I’ll have to garner attention here.”Â
Elanor glanced around the room. “I think we can work with this. It really just needs a lady’s touch.”Â
“O-of course I don’t intend to change it too much,” Amaya said. She really didn’t want to completely change everything around and make Akarias feel uncomfortable in his own bedroom. “I mean, you were here first. I could always have my own chambers. Most queens back on the mainland usually have their own rooms.” She shrugged. “I guess the biggest piece of furniture to bring would be my piano. Other than that and my personal clothes, I guess my bow and quiver, and my art supplies.”
“An archer and an artist?” Akarias said, crossing his arms and smiling. “Impressive. And just when I thought you couldn’t get more talented. Could definitely make some room for that stuff. “I’ll be seeing you again tomorrow then, Edward!” Aladar said, grinning back at the man. “The others can help Elanor with the wedding plans.”
Akarias nodded. “Yeah, we can sort that out with Elanor tomorrow. For now, if we’re done eating I can show Amaya our room so she can point out any changes she wants?” He looked to Amaya to see if she was ready.
Amaya offered a slight smile and stood. “Yes, I think I am ready.”Â
Normally, it was not customary for the betrothed to see the room or the wedding bed before the ceremony. From what she heard, the bride’s things were delivered and after the wedding, living spaces were adjusted. But Amaya was not exactly traditional, and she knew if she had another makeout session with him in his private quarters, she would most likely not stop him this time.Â
“I believe I will accompany you,” Elanor said with gentle smile.Â
“Mother, I think we will be fine,” Amaya said.Â
“Of course. I don’t doubt that. I just…want to see your living space so I can help you decide when we get home what shall be sent with you.”Â
Amaya gave Akarias a sour look when her mother wasn’t looking. It was clear she was disappointed that she wasn’t going to get a moment alone with him. She knew what her mother was really up to. Elanor didn’t think it would be proper for Amaya to be in Akarias’ quarters alone. Although her mother would never entertain the idea that the king would wrongfully take advantage of her daughter, Elanor was young once. She also knew how impulsive Amaya could be and how men could be when there was strong mutual attraction.Â
Amaya had a feeling that her mother could sense the attraction between her and Akarias. Since she thought Amaya was still a virgin, Elanor was only acting on her motherly duty to protect her daughter’s chastity.Â
The redhead gave a reluctant sigh. “Very well.”
“Oh, yeah, you can come with us if you want I guess,” Akarias said, a little nervous at the sour look Amaya gave him. He wasn’t sure why she was annoyed.

He grinned. “Well I just wanted to make sure the person I went through all the trouble to save actually survived. But if a date is on the table, well…I wouldn’t turn that down.” His smile widened and he waggled his eyebrows playfully.
“There it is. The truth comes out,” she giggled. Then she shot him a mischievous grin. “Or maybe you just came to check on me and then you saw how hot I was, so you decided to try to figure out a way to get into my pants when I’m healed.” She wiggled her eyebrows back. “Neither option is off the table given how challenging Soren has made it to get laid these days. Tell you what. If you kick that fucker’s ass and make it out alive, you’ve got a date.”Â
Akarias laughed and put a hand over his heart. “I was just concerned, honest. You are pretty hot, and I’m definitely gonna take you up on that date. But I’m starting to think you’re the one trying to get into my pants here. Not that I’m complaining. It’s because I’m a badass mage isn’t it?” He smirked, teasingly. “And it’s about guaranteed we’re gonna kick his ass, so it’s a date then!”

“An attendant?” Andun spoke up, nodding thoughtfully. “I think I’ve heard of those. Personal servants.”
“Hmm, not the sort of thing we have here,” Akarias mused, “but like I said, we can accommodate some of your customs. And I’m sure it’ll help for you to have a familiar face around.” He knew he’d be taking her out of her whole world and trapping her in an unfamiliar land. He felt bad for it, and wanted to make this as easy for her as he could. “This castle is way bigger than I really need anyway, and we have plenty of unused rooms. The staff use some when they need to spend the night, but we can have some maid up for Galia if you want to bring her along.”
Akarias smiled a put a hand on Amaya’s. He really wanted to try to make this work.
Amaya felt Akarias’ hand over hers and she looked up at him. His smile was sincere and she couldn’t help but just about melt at the candor in his orange eyes. Clearly, she must not have overstepped her boundaries if he was willing to agree to such a request. Many other women she knew that had been whisked off to strange lands with strange customs were not as fortunate.
She returned his smile and gave his hand a slight squeeze. The gesture was not lost on her mother, who looked on with her own small smile. She seemed pleased that Amaya was finally going to wed someone she seemed to like.Â
“Dinner was quite delicious,” Evelyn finally said. “I believe I am ready to retire for the evening. We shall make arrangements to tour the land soon, once the trade deal is closed.”Â
“Yes, dinner was really good,” Edward agreed. He glanced at Akarias and Amaya and then to Aldar. “Tomorrow we will meet over the trade deal. In the meantime, I will let Elanor handle the wedding plans and tour the island as there will be many details yet to be worked out. I can sightsee when I come back for the wedding.”Â

Akarias smiled back at her and laughed, trying to ease the mood. “Of course I will! I gotta come back and brag about my exploits! Tell you all about how I had to hold off Sortan on my own and beat him down and all that! Show you all this worry wasn’t needed.”
Amaya laughed, but then she held her sides. She was too sore to laugh too hard. “Typical fucking man,” she said, giggling. “It’s like a fishing story. The fish you caught is like three inches, but when you tell it, you’d think you hooked Moby Dick.” She laid back on her pillow and smiled. She looked at Akarias. “Just out of curiosity. What made you come visit me in the first place. You could have just made sure I was safe and went on your way.” She smirked. “Unless you were hoping for a date or something.”
He grinned. “Well I just wanted to make sure the person I went through all the trouble to save actually survived. But if a date is on the table, well...I wouldn’t turn that down.” His smile widened and he waggled his eyebrows playfully.

“That would make sense,” Akarias said, nodding as he began to eat. “I can show you to our room after dinner and you can say if there are any changes you want made while you’re gone.”
“And who is this Galia?” Aldar asked curiously. “I’m sure you’ll have plenty of friends you’ll want to bring for the wedding, which we can house for their visit, but someone else coming to stay permanently?”
“That would be nice,” Amaya said to Akarias. She felt tempted to add, “But you’ll have to promise to keep your hands and lips off me,” but she refrained since her parents were there.Â
She glanced at Aldar. “Galia is my attendant. Every noble woman has at least one, and so does every princess and queen I know. Some queens have an entire court of four or five ladies in waiting. I just have the one.”
“Galia, of course, can be given the option of accompanying Amaya to her new home,” her father said.Â
“Yes, she will be offered a choice. I respect her far too much to just force her to leave. But I would prefer to have her with me if she is willing. She won’t be a problem, and she does not require elaborate quarters. She is mostly responsible for my belongings and the upkeep of my living space, among other things. It would be nice to have at least one familiar face with me since I’m leaving my entire world behind.”Â
Amaya was never the kind of person to make unreasonable demands, but she saw no reason that Galia shouldn’t come with her if she chose to do so. It had occurred to her that she was indeed leaving behind everyone she cared about and loved to live among complete strangers in an even stranger land. And being on an island would be isolating, and she anticipated that visits to the mainland would be rare. Akarias was a king, after all, and there was no way he could keep her company all the time. He would likely be busy if he were like any monarch back in her homeland.Â
Galia was more than just her attendant. She had been with Amaya since they were twelve years old, and they were intimate friends. Galia was probably the one person who knew everything about Amaya. Liam was a close second. Galia had been with Amaya for so long that she could anticipate her needs without being told. That and Amaya trusted Galia implicitly. She was not sure she could ever find such camaraderie with anyone else.Â
“An attendant?” Andun spoke up, nodding thoughtfully. “I think I’ve heard of those. Personal servants.”
