As the only daughter and heir to the throne of Hyrule, Zelda has been fairly sheltered most of her life, never really leaving Castle Town to see the greater part of Hyrule. She has spent many years studying and training to eventually take on the role as the Queen when her father steps down, having little time for personal travel.
However, she is not ignorant of the world and its dangers; part of her training has included self-defense and knowledge of varying monsters, taught by General Wright, as well as diplomacy and etiquette as taught by Minister Lefte.
Of course, she also received some personal training with Impa, who has taught her the basics of Sheikah martial arts.
When she was captured by the monster she'd later know to be Ganon, it was one of the first times she'd been so far from the Castle. Now, on her adventures, she is learning much about the people and places of her kingdom, which is the one thing she may thank Ganon for when she defeats him.
