I searched the term picture books on instagram. It appeared to be very similar to tumblr in the beginning. The main difference that I noticed was that instagram featured a lot of people in the images, which I didn’t come across in tumblr.  I believe instagram romanticised picture books and included a lot of parents publically acknowledging that their children were reading books. On the other hand, instagram provided insights into a range of good picture books to read. For example, someone posted an image of the book ‘the water princess’ and explained how it is a book about a girl walking to bring water to her village. It discusses how nearly one million billion do not have access to clean water.  I did not know that this book existed until I came across it on instagram.

When I searched the term picture books on tumblr, I came across a number of books that I didn’t know existed. For example, the book ‘Goodbye Brecken’ is a story about the death of a pet. It is about a girl’s first experience with grief and loss. It can be used to help students understand their emotions and be used to discuss coping strategies.  This is just what I learnt about one book.  I look forward to further investigating others!

Week 6:

Using the Abc website, I found this recourse about National Sorry Day and the stolen generation.  I would use this recourse to relate to the cross curricular priority, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.  Before viewing this video, I would ask students about why we have National Sorry day and possibly get the students to create a brainstorm about what they know about Indigenous history. After the video we will discuss the term invasion. This can be used as a front loading activity for grade 5/6 students, before reading the text ‘Welcome to Country’.

The sentence that we created in class was ‘the girl’s bones feel hollow and her skin feels transparent, she has no strength or food during this silent, cold night’.  We had to include additional words so the sentence made sense. The second sentence I altered slightly to create the question, ‘has the world moved on and shut its ears?’

The book Dust can be very confronting for some children; therefore, before reading the text Dust I would seek permission from the student’s parents.   As a front loader activity, I would visit the save the children website and discuss  the website’s pictures and what the organisation is about. Furthermore, I would inform that the book we are going to read can be quite confronting and explain that some people will react differently to others.

ECL WEEK 4

I believe that a classroom should display the student’s work, such as a poster on bush fires that the students have recently completed. This will give the students a sense of pride and belonging in the classroom. Furthermore, I believe that the classroom should display posters with information relevant to what the students are learning. This is beneficial for the students as they can refer back to the information on a regular basis. Lastly, I believe that all classrooms should have a schedule written on the board, so the students are informed of what is expected of them throughout the day.

ECL WEEK 3

In this week I have read literature for assignments and a couple of chapters of a book called ‘Heir of Fire’. I have also read emails, Facebook messages, text messages etc. Furthermore, I have read stuff such as the train timetable, different clothing styles at work and the score board at basketball. The list could continue for a very long time.

This week, it is evident that I have read a lot of information on Facebook.  I am engaged in numerous group conversations on Facebook and often read articles on the news stream.  The type of writing is very informal.

Using the book ‘Are You Seeing Me?’ by Darren Groth, I will create a prediction activity that requires the students to look at the graphics and text of the book. It will be a simple five minute activity. I will ask the students if they can predict what they think is going to happen in the text. will encourage the students to refer to the text, graphics, knowledge of the world and inferential meaning.  In the following lessons, as a class we can read the book and change our predictions.

As a child I didn’t really enjoy reading books, as I preferred to be outside playing sports with my friends. In Primary School I used to hate it when we would read books as a class. I always had a fear that the teacher was going to choose me to read in front of the class or ask me a question. The only time that I thoroughly enjoyed reading books as a class, was when the teacher read a big picture story book. I used to love relaxing and listening to the story. I particularly liked books that contained humour. For example, I can remember when my teacher read a book to the class where the words didn’t match up to the picture.  My teacher kept the picture hidden and read the page out loud. Then she would show the students the picture and we thought it was hilarious.  For example, on one page of the book the girl said that she wasn’t very hungry this morning, so she decided to eat just one egg. The egg was humongous however, and took up the entire page. I really wish that I could remember the name of that book!

On my rounds, every lunch time we would read the book called ‘The Witches’ by Roald Dahl. It was a fantastic experience, as the students intently listened to the story and found it hilarious.  The students also enjoyed discussing this book and predicting what the evil witches were going to do next.
