Pleaaaaaaase just watch the show first Trust Me you will likely have a much better time, you can read the books later when you’re really invested and you’ll get more out of them when you can pick up on the early foreshadowing.

I adore these books, but the show is a much better and more accessible point of entry for most people new to the story. Even if just for ease of watching 8 episode seasons instead of reading 800 page bricks. Also the show’s gayer and has more early focus on and development of the main female characters.

For real, this applies to ANY book or especially book series, but particularly one as long, as old, and as notorious for wasting its page count as WOT. The show gets to fix all the problems that come from the author not outlining the whole story up front (and certainly not being honest with himself about how long it would take to write) to know when he needed to establish things, and changing his mind halfway on fairly major details, and 35 years of social change besides.

Free yourself of the obligation to know the "original" story before you see any adaptation. Stop teaching yourself to be a gatekeeping purist and start letting media speak to you on its own terms.

I remember arguing with this trans-identified female before I was full-on gender-critical. I had asked her why it wasn’t enough for her to just express herself however she wanted. As in, why wasn’t it enough for her to cut off her hair, wear masculine clothing, go by a masculine name, etc. Why did she have to go one step further and misogynistically claim that the aforementioned characteristics meant she was no longer a woman? Because as she had described it, gender dysphoria was indeed an issue of self-expression first and foremost—not an issue of linguistics. 

She responded by saying that even if she self-expressed in a masculine manner, being called a woman would still give her dysphoria due to the stereotype of women being feminine. Essentially, it bothered her that others would associate the word woman with femininity. So then I asked how we would ever deconstruct those associations if masculine women like herself continued to deny their womanhood, and continued to insist that their masculinity meant they were actually men. She never responded after that.

What was most intriguing to me, is that she had no issue acknowledging that her sex was female. With that in mind, I had attempted to explain that whether she called herself a transgender man or a gender-non-conforming woman, in most people’s minds that simply translated to being a masculine female. And again, if she had no issue acknowledging that she was a masculine female, then why couldn’t she just as easily acknowledge that she was a masculine woman? Round and round the questions went.

Not letting your daughters develop a creep alarm is abuse.

She will go to college one day. Just her and 10,000 20 year old men. Do you really think the purity culture narrative you have instilled in her is going to protect her if she's drunk at a party and is starting to feel unsafe, when you've taught her that her saftey comes second to male comfort?

She will have a job one day. How hard do you think it's going to be for her to navigate creepy advances in a professional setting if you've taught her she's being rude when she so much as tells a man he's making her uncomfortable?

You have 18 short years to instill into her a sense of caution and a firmness in her boundaries that for the rest of her life the society she lives in will try to beat out of her. You know she won't learn it later if you don't teach her now.

You're intentionally setting her up for an adult life of silently witnessing her own abuse, why? So you don't have to have a slightly awkward conversation about no meaning no with another grown adult? So your perfectly obedient child can be used as an entertainment accessory at family gatherings? I'd genuinely like to know what the reasoning is to intentionally endanger your child by teaching her to be perfect prey to violent men for the rest of her life.
