what annoys me about explaining evolution to people who donât think itâs real is that everyoneâs idea of how it works seems to be from this
Whereas the reality is far more like
Was not expecting this many of you to resonate with Millennium Death Plinko
you guys are so annoying. why do i have to see discourse every year that's like "was tolkien really a woke king or was he your conservative uncle?" the guy was a devout catholic and a genteel misogynist who maintained lifelong friendships with queer people and women, and this isn't even paradoxical because that was part of the upper-class oxford culture he was immersed in. tolkien told the nazis to fuck off (and in doing so demonstrated a real understanding of what racism is and why it's harmful, beyond simply "these guys are bad news because they're who my country is at war with right now") but his inner life was marked by internalized racism that is deeply and inextricably woven into the art that he made. he foolishly described himself as an anarcho-monarchist, and it's kind of crazy to see people on this website passionately arguing that he likely never meaningfully engaged with anarchist theory, because...yeah, no shit, of course he didn't. tolkien didn't have to engage with most sociopolitical theory because as an upper-class englishman of his position, he was never affected by any of the issues that this theory is concerned with. what is plainly obvious from reading both his fiction and letters is that tolkien's ideal political system was that the divinely ordained god-king would rise up and rule in perfect justice and humility; he didn't want a government, he wanted a king arthur, even though (obviously) he was aware that outcome was impossible. why is it so hard for people to accept that he was just some guy! his letters aren't a code you have to crack. no amount of arguing or tumblr-level analysis is going to one day reveal a rhetorically airtight internally consistent worldview spanning jrrt's fiction, academic work, and personal writings, thereby "solving" the question of whether he was a woke king or your conservative uncle. his ideology was extremely inconsistent because, at the end of the day, he was just some guy.
Youâll all sleep a lot better when you realise that actually most people, rather than being purity in human form or evil incarnate, are in fact just some guy.
a weird thing is that we got waves of people going "who cares if its cringe or youre annoying! have fun!" but no one really learned how to accept the fact that some people will find you annoying or think your art or your work or posts or anyrhing sucks and thats ok. rather it just became a weird "if people think youre annoying theyre just morally bad. let people enjoy things!". like no i think this yes man only biome sucks and people are allowed to not like artstyles and shows and media and other things
if youre an artist, a creator, or just someone whos involved in hobbies: learning that no matter what you do, some people will find you annoying is extremely important for your mental health, just as learning that not liking things is normal and youre allowed to do it
as people have mentioned in the tags, i think this yes-man attitude leads more people to make up random moral reasons to dislike things. if disliking something for no reason is bad, then you have to constantly justify yourself as to why this thing sucks, which is also not mature and sucks
Death of the author: Treating the authorâs stated interpretation of their own work as merely one opinion among many, rather than the authoritative Word of God.
Disappearance of the author: Treating the context and circumstances of the workâs authorship as entirely irrelevant with respect to its interpretation, as though the work had popped into existence fully formed just moments ago.
Taxidermy of the author: Working backwards from a particular interpretation of the work to draw conclusions about what the context and circumstances of its authorship must have been.
Undeath of the author: Holding the author personally responsible for every possible reading of their work, even ones they could not reasonably have anticipated at the time of its authorship.
Frankensteinâs Monster of the author: Drawing conclusions about authorial intent based on elements that are present only in subsequent adaptations by other authors.
Weekend at Bernieâs of the author: Insisting that the author would personally endorse your interpretation of the work if they happened to be present.
I thought this was going to be a joke, but these are all very real things you see people do.
Iâm never more serious than when Iâm joking.
Any setting where the elves have weaker booze than the dwarves isn't committing to the bit
I mean, we're talking about people whose lifespan is Yes.
"Oh, the weak wine? That is for children. I am two thousand years old, and I daresay one sip from this highball would knock you on your ass for a week."
Look, there's this weird thing people do with high fantasy where they want elves to be immortal/extremely long-lived snooty aristocrats and also somehow incapacitated by imagining the taste of salt too hard. "Orcs and dwarves have the hardest booze" no they don't, they have work in the morning! In any of these settings, elves would pregame harder than hobbits party and everyone else has shit to do tomorrow.
The average high elf builds up the drug tolerance of a mid-70s Hollywood producer and then spends three centuries studying alchemy. While humans seek immortality, the Immortals seek the elusive "philosopher's cocaine."
Elf Fentanyl works exactly the way cops think human fentanyl does
Every urban fantasy/comic book character who complains about how they wish they could go back to their normal life of being ugly and bullied and uninteresting because now they can teleport or levitate truly does not deserve the powers they were given
Socially bankrupt teen who only wears zip-up hoodies in navy, gray, or maroon, discovering he can crack the earth with his mind: âOhhHHhh nOoOoo, wHaT abOUt pROm wiTH aliSOnâ
Clearly there are two major problems with this ongoing cliche and two easy solutions:
The character gifted with powers is not interesting, so replace them with a more interesting character.
The powers are so obviously beneficial, so make them a curse and blessing wrapped in one.
Iâd rather see what happens to the minority kid living in oppression suddenly gifted strange powers than another whiny loser. Or see someone given abilities that are frustratingly contrast to their ideas or personality: introverts given flashy powers, hyperactive characters given powers that require stillness of the body and mind, a character out for blood given a very non-violent power and learns how to point it toward violence anyway, a pacifist character granted a very volatile ability who manages to use it in a creative non-violent way.
One overlooked thing that really sets the Lord of the Rings films apart from other franchises is how earnest they are-
Most movies are so afraid of being âcheesyâ that whenever they say something like âfriendship is the most powerful force in the worldâ they quickly undercut it with a joke to show We Donât Really Believe That! ;) Â Even Disney films nowadays have the characters mock their own movieâs tropes (âif you start singing, Iâm gonna throw up!â) Itâs like winking at the camera: âSee, audience? We know this is ridiculous! Weâre in on the joke!â
But Lord of the Rings is just 12.5 hours of friendship and love being the most powerful forces in the world, played straight. Characters have conversations about how much their home and family and friends mean to them, how hope is eternal, how there is so much in the world thatâs worth living forâŠ. and the film doesnât apologize for that. Thereâs no winking at the audience about How Cheesy and Silly All This Is; itâs just. Completely in earnest.
And when Lord of the Rings does âlean on the fourth wallâ to talk about storytelling within the film, itâs never to make jokes about How Ridiculous These Storytelling Tropes are (the way most films do)âŠ. but instead to talk about how valuable these stories can be. Like Samâs Speech at the end of the Two Towers: the greatest stories are ones that give you something to believe in, give you hope, that help you see there are things in a bleak violent world that are worth living for
Earnestness is so much cooler than all the hip cynicism in the world. You go LOTR
I remember watching the directorâs commentary on that very scene and peter Jackson said that they when they wrote Samâs speech they were so worried. they were terrified that it was going to sound cheesy and insincere but they really needed to say that stuff bc TT ended on such a dark note and they needed the audience to trust that it was going to pay off in RotK. and that they were DEPENDING on Sean astin to execute the line PERFECTLY, and then he fucking did!
anyway props to that whole film family
Seivarden Vendaai really gives Harry Du Bois a run for his money in the pathetic meow meow race. You meet her lying face down, naked, high and half dead in the snow. As soon as she sobers up she starts crying. The family car hates her. She sobs that she wants to die and the person who saved her life goes âthen why donât you, pussyâ. She still finds time amid this to be indignant about being asked to do minor chores. Babygirl.
Does every fucking thing HAVE to be acknowledged? Does every show have to put up a glaring red sign declaring, "This is bad kids! Don't behave like this" whenever a character does something even mildly problematic?! I'm really asking. Does every relationship have to be equal? Are we always owed retribution before happiness for fictional characters? I think that's such bullshit.
People look down on McDonaldâs employees but fail to realize that if all these folks left McDonaldâs and pursued âbetter careersâ  your ass wouldnât be able to get a McDouble with an Oreo McFlurry at 3am.Â

so i drew an AU where they wear hoodies and onesies
