at the sound of eddie’s voice, liam immediately perked up, looking over the top of his laptop to see his coworker standing there. “hey man.” liam said, happy to see a familiar face. because he’d moved here a little over a week ago, he didn’t have many friends, but eddie was definitely one of them, the two clicking from the first shift they worked together. “i’m just trying to be really prepared for this exam. the college didn’t take some of my credits so i’m trying to place out of some intro level classes so i don’t have to retake them.”
Eddie leaned against the counter, taking in the setup Liam had for himself. Books left behind by various customers scattered across the wooden top gently leaned against each other and tipped towards the computer. It didn’t look much different than his own room, but as hard-working college students who could expect anything more? “Hey.” He glanced at the computer, trying to see if he recognized anything at all. “I know that feeling. I had a few issues when I transferred here. They tried to place me in a few classes that I didn’t need, but you just gotta keep hassling them or proving them wrong and trust me you’ll be taken out.”

rae: I've had enough attention to last a damn life time.
rae: good! i used to always go to the zoo for my birthday and would like to do it again.
eddie: well your wish is my command
“The day is tough no matter what, I think people who work at hospitals rarely get a break,” he said, knowing that it wasn’t only doctors who covered crazy shifts. “Yes, exactly. It’s not as easy as memorizing a song. Anyway, how the school is going?”
“You’re right. It’s a tough job.” He nodded his head, acknowledging the truth. At the mention of school, Eddie couldn’t contain the small groan. “Being a bio major is harder than I thought. I mean I knew it was hard, but this is getting ridiculous.”
because it was late and the bookstore hadn’t had any customers in the past hour or so, liam figured it would be okay to take out his laptop and do some studying until it was time to close up. he still needed to work out some of his transfer credits and take a few placement exams before classes started, and the shop was the perfect place to get his work done. the tinkle of the bell above the door alerted him that someone had walked in, his head perking up from his spot behind the counter. “if you have any questions, just holler.” he called out, still focused on the study questions on his laptop.
When Eddie wasn’t walking or forcing himself to actually refresh his knowledge on his major, he usually found himself at the bookstore outside of the hours of his shift. There was something about it that calmed him. It could be the eery resemblance to the bookstore back home or the fact that it was one place that was usually quiet. Whatever it was, Eddie always felt drawn to it. Walking in, he looked towards the sound of the voice, laughing when he saw Liam had barely — if not at all — glanced up. “Trust me. I won’t have any questions.” He called back, walking over to him. “Your eyes might fall out of your head if you try to get any closer to the screen.”

rae: tomorrows my birthday, and before you say anything about me not telling you, I don't want people to know.
rae: but will you go to the zoo with me? if you're not busy!
eddie: why don't you want people to know???
eddie: of courseee i love the zoo that isn't even a question
“ oh no ? ” grace asked, conversationally, her lips pressing down on a smile as eddie lost ( another ) battle with his fringe. she linked their arms together before she answered his question, giving a small ‘ mmm. ’ of thought as they started walking forwards. “ a few things, i guess. ” it felt odd, then. grace realised eddie might actually care about her answer. “ i’ve been looking a bit more into that elephant sanctuary i was telling you about. —— oh, jords and i have been talking about escaping to barbados for a romantic get a way, too. andrew rediscovered the j o y s of connect four. really, this week has been wild. ”
“Definitely not.” He laughed gently, running a hand through his hair to hopefully get his hair under control. He relaxed more as their arms hooked together, allowing for the madness of the week to melt away with each step they took. He liked hearing her talk about her day. It wasn’t everyone who told stories such as hers. “Really? And what’ve you found? Good things I hope.” He paid her his full attention, something his mother and his sister had shown him to do. It showed someone you cared without full out saying it. He made an appreciative sound as she continued, nodding along and laughing as he heard about Andrew. “If you’re going to Barbados I suggest you bring sunscreen and lots of it. I mean, tans are fun. Sunburns? Not so much.” He took in their surroundings, feeling just a bit more like he belonged. “Connect four is amazing when you’re the one winning. Other than that it’s like a catalyst for arguments.” He hoped he wasn’t rambling too much, but he couldn’t help it. There was something about the moment that just made him let go.

eddie: what is this demand?
eddie: please don't pout i can't deal with the pout

⊗ A voice behind Aaron’s entity erupted like angels from the heavens and he turned, expression aloof.
A young man, probably around his age, commented quietly and Aaron turned back to the closed store, huffing.
“That is what smart people would do,” he said. “Apparently I’m not smart. S’my own damn fault, I guess. Should’ve gone grocery shopping sooner. But shit, why must these places close so early? It’s a fuckin’ college area. You’d think they’d stay open late so drunk college kids can stockpile on overpriced drunk food.”
Eddie laughed as he turned back, seeing the exasperation written clearly on his features. “No, that is what people who are constantly in this situation do.” He laughed, his hands finding their way back into his pockets. “Listen, you’d think they’d learn, but no. They’re just going to slowly lose business as the year goes on. I mean drunk college students? Very passive aggressive when they want.”

james had his backpack clutched to his chest, the rain coming down hard as he was running from the door of his complex to the door of eddie’s car. the rain was catching on his glasses but he still managed to make out the handle and climb inside. “ oh boy, “ he laughs, sitting his bag down to take his glasses off, using the hem of his shirt to collect the droplets. “ thank you for getting me. it would have been unpleasant to stand at the bus stop. “ maybe he should invest in an umbrella.
Eddie squinted through the window, trying to identify James from a distance from the other blobs of color created by the rain drops on his windshield. He really needed to change his windshield wipers. He unlocked the door, frowning as he saw James running. “It’s no problem really. I wasn’t going to leave you out in the rain like that.” He turned slightly, watching for cars before he pulled away from the curb, driving down the street. He had the radio on, but it was nothing more than quiet background music accented by the rain. “Where are we headed again? I forgot to check the message again and didn’t want to check my phone while driving. Pulling out my phone while driving caused that dent you see on the right side of the bed so lesson learned.”
meeting eddie wasn’t a particularly hard decision for grace. his text had punctured a conversation with her father and his misdirected good intentions ( ‘ grace, would you like to sit down and eat something with me ? ’ ‘ dad, some people call it lunch. ’ ). she’d been replying in a blue cloud of xxx’s before he’d been able to sigh out a breath and convince his daughter to stay. “ eddie ! ” she called when she spotted her friend now — if that’s what they could call it. “ how’re you, babe ? been catching any waves ? ”
It didn’t take long for Eddie’s nerves to fade once he received her reply. She was definitely one to make any reply seem exciting. At the sound of her voice, he turned, smiling as she walked towards him. Why exactly was he nervous again? “Hey,” He looked down slightly, his hair getting in his eyes as he tried to be level with her. “I’m alright as can be and to answer that no. No waves have been caught, unfortunately. How about you? Anything new happening in the life of Grace Buella? You know, besides taking walks with moi.”
“That is true and maybe it would,” he said with a shrug. “It was the worst, I always thought I had a good memory until they forced me to memorize things.”
“Well, I mean, you’re one of the doctors. Being short one makes the day a lot tougher.” He assumed working on a hospital floor took more teamwork than many account for. “I know that feeling. Trying to remember things assigned to you is way tougher than trying to memorize something you decided on.”
“I guess they believe we don’t need sleep, but in their defense, there’s always someone in the hospital who needs help.” He couldn’t complain much as he knew what he was getting into when he decided to become a doctor. “I understand you completely. I used to stay up all night trying to memorize all the names of the bones.”
“But it would suck if one of those people are you that would surely put a damper on things.” He raised an eyebrow at him, lifting his coffee cup and taking a sip. "Now, that sounds like a pain.”
