Alt lit angst, sex essays and genre-bending poetry provided some of the best literature of the year
a few days ago i gave my partner lauren her first knuckle tattoos. the tattoos are simple symbols i drew to represent six key principles to writing delivered to the world by italo calvino over a series of six essays. i found the book âsix memos for the next milleniumâ in the trade box at sticky and over winter me and lauren traded it back and forth discussing the qualities: âquicknessâ âlightnessâ âmultiplicityâ consistencyâ âvisibiltyâ and âexactitudeâ. it was his last published work, he died before he finished the essay on consistency. it is a beautiful book and more than just ideas on how to write, it is histories of important thought and expression according italo. it works in terms of when thinking: âwhat way should i livez now?â
the symbols will look as if they are tattooed upside down to you but that is beacuse lauren wanted them to be arranged for her viewing and not the viewing of others.
here is a link to a free version of the book online: http://anemonehaze.com/assets/2008/1/13/interior.pdf

I write every night. I just sit down and go, âIâm gonna write what happened today,â because what I realized at a very young age, was that time passes. Stuff thatâs very important to you, and that you never wanna forget, ends up sometimes being forgotten. Thatâs what happens. Even the biggest moments in your life, yâknow, walking on stage in front of 100,000 people will fade, unless you write it down.

"What readers of Beat Generation literature often failed to observe is that although the Beats became known as a literary force in the mid-fifties with the publication of On the Road and the Six Gallery reading, the Beat group that is described in these works existed ten years earlier. By the time the Beats were a cultural phenomenon, the Times Square hipsters and Columbia group that made up the core of the Beat legacy had largely disbanded, and were leading lives far apart from one another. Perhaps, had Kerouac had access to Createspace and Lulu, or even a Blogger or Tumblr account, it might not have taken so long. Ginsberg, certainly, wouldâve enjoyed promoting his friendsâ work via Twitter and Facebook"
