EastEnders bosses have released the first pictures of new characters Stan Carter and Babe Smith making their debuts on the show. As previously announced, Timothy West has been cast in the role of Stan, who is the father of Mick, Shirley and Tina. Upcoming episodes of EastEnders see the Carters realise that they need financial help, so they turn to Stan for support as they have no other options. When Mick, Shirley and Tina visit Stan, it's clear that each of them has a very different relationship with their father. The strongest reaction is from Shirley, who has a long-standing feud with her dad and isn't happy about having to approach him for help. Meanwhile, show bosses also last month announced the casting of Annette Badland as Babe, who is the Carters' maternal aunt. Billed as "no-nonsense and big-hearted", Babe turns up on Albert Square unexpectedly a few days after Mick, Shirley and Tina have made their visit to Stan. EastEnders airs these scenes on Monday, January 27 and Friday, January 31 at 8pm on BBC One.
EastEnders fans will know that in 2013 the viewing figures dropped dramatically. Well you'll be pleased to know that EastEnders edged closer to the 8 million mark on Thursday evening (January 2) as Johnny Carter's secret was revealed to his family, overnight figures show. 7.88m (34.2%) watched at 7.30pm on BBC One as Nancy told Mick and Linda that Johnny is gay during a heated family row. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 448k (2.6%) at 10.30pm.
EastEnders couple Kat and Alfie Moon have learned that they are expecting twins. The Walford couple received the surprising news in Friday night's episode (January 3) after Kat was rushed to hospital following a fall at home.
The scare left Kat (Jessie Wallace) fearing that she could lose her unborn baby, but she was soon reassured that everything was fine with her pregnancy.
When Kat later had an ultrasound with Alfie (Shane Richie) by her side, the pair were left stunned to hear that they will be welcoming two babies later in the year.
While fans knew about Kat's hospital dash, EastEnders bosses kept the Moons' happy news secret until the episode aired.
Show chiefs also kept the full details of Carl White's death under wraps this week and have promised to deliver more on-screen surprises throughout the year.
EastEnders star Danny Dyer has responded to Lord Alan Sugar's criticism of his arrival on the show. The Apprentice businessman has been taking to Twitter to address his dislike of the new Carter family, who took over the Queen Vic during the Christmas period.
Sugar's tweets have branded the new cast "a total joke", and he has urged the writers to put former managers Kat and Alfie Moon back in charge of the pub.
However, Dyer, who plays new landlord Mick Carter, finally responded to the posts last night, tweeting: "Now now Mr Sugar be nice. The trolling lark don't suit ya."
Sugar defended his tweets, adding that they 'weren't personal' and that it wasn't Dyer's fault. Dyer responded by referencing his beloved West Ham, saying: "Patience my love. You'll see the light. It's claret and blue."EastEnders continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
The writers behind EastEnders' gay romance storyline have spoken out after the BBC soap received complaints over the kiss it aired last Monday (December 30). The episode, which saw Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy) and Johnny Carter (Sam Strike) kiss as part of a new plot that leads Johnny to come out to his father Mick (Danny Dyer), received two complaints from viewers.
The episode which featured Danny and Johnny kissing aired an hour later than usual, at 9pm. A BBC spokeswoman said that it was only pushed back because the movie Shrek Forever After preceded it in the schedules.Pete Lawson, who wrote Monday's episode, said on Twitter: "2014, and gay teens kissing on a soap still draws complaints. Makes me even prouder to have written that ep."
Daran Little, the writer behind tonight's episode where Johnny tells Mick about his sexuality, tweeted that the complaints show "no progress" is being made in people's attitudes towards gay people. "10 years ago Coronation Street had complaints when I wrote Todd kissing Nick... now complaints about EastEnders gay kiss... no progress," he wrote. "I thinks it's encouraging that Hollyoaks gay kisses don't get complaints, cos its viewers are young and accepting."
"EastEnders aims to reflect real life, and this means including and telling stories about characters from many different backgrounds, faiths, religions and sexualities," she added. "We approach our portrayal of homosexual relationships in exactly the same way as we do heterosexual relationships; ensuring depictions of affection or sexuality between couples are suitable for pre-watershed viewing."
EastEnders airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
EastEnders has kicked off 2014 in dramatic fashion as the soap's New Year's Day episode saw Ronnie Mitchell kill bad boy Carl White. Show bosses had teased that Ronnie would get rid of Carl forever in the hour-long special, but exact details of their deadly final showdown at The Arches and Ronnie sending her enemy's body to the scrap yard were all kept well under wraps until tonight.
With Ronnie and an oblivious Roxy now off to Ibiza together, leaving Phil to deal with the fallout as he continues to wonder just how far Ronnie went to deal with her nemesis… What did you make of tonight's twists and the dark new direction for Ronnie?

EastEnders airs emotional scenes featuring newcomer Sam Strike this evening (January 3) as his character Johnny Carter is finally honest about his sexuality. Last night, viewers saw Johnny's sister Nancy expose his secret during a heated family row at the Queen Vic. As tonight's episode begins, Nancy frantically tries to backtrack and claims that she was lying, but Johnny is soon left to wonder whether it's time to tell his parents the truth. Later, Johnny finally breaks down in his father Mick's arms and confirms that he is gay. How will Mick react?
EastEnders bosses have cast Timothy West and Annette Badland as the newest additions to the Carter family. West has landed the role of Stan, who is the father of Mick, Shirley and Tina, and Badland will play the Carters' maternal 'Aunt Babe'. Billed as a retired Billingsgate fishmonger who is fighting a battle against old age, Stan has been lonely since his wife left him 30 years ago and is delighted to have his children back in his life. However, opinionated and curmudgeonly Stan isn't all he seems, and he won't waste time in manipulating the Carter clan once he's settled into Walford. Meanwhile, Aunt Babe is described as a "no-nonsense, bustling busybody" with a big heart. However, beneath her bubbly front is a tough, shrewd and canny woman. She is thrilled to be back with her family, and is determined not to let Stan ruin things for them again. Speaking of his new role, West said: "I am excited to be joining EastEnders for the first time. Stan is a wonderful character and I look forward to seeing what is going to happen to him." Badland added: "I'm thrilled to be joining the cast of EastEnders as I've always admired the show and everyone involved in it seems so warm-hearted. Aunt Babe is a fabulous and complex woman and I can't wait to get stuck into the role."
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said "We are reinvigorating EastEnders' older generation with the arrival of Stan and Aunt Babe, who will start to fill in some holes in the dark Carter family history. "Tim and Annette are national institutions and such gifted, nuanced actors, bringing a real touch of Dickensian magic to the screen. It's an honour to have them join our company". West appeared as Eric Babbage in Coronation Street earlier this year, and his previous credits also include Bedtime, Bremner, Bird & Fortune, Bleak House and Poirot. He was appointed CBE for his services to drama in 1984. Badland, who has previously appeared in Doctor Who, Wizards vs Aliens, Cutting It and Little Voice, has also been seen in Coronation Street and Doctors. Stan and Aunt Babe will appear in EastEnders from the end of January.
Things get off to a bumpy start for the Carters, but Linda soon swells with pride as The Vic opens for the first time with the Carters in charge. Meanwhile, Sharon is not pleased when she realises who Phil has sold The Vic to, but she soon has other reasons to be happy. Elsewhere, when Ronnie realises Roxy is going down a dangerous path, she comes up with a cunning plan. Airs Friday the 27th December, 8PM BBC One.
