If he was supposed to recognize the tune, he didn’t. If anything, he just shoved her gently, shaking his head. “What is so wrong with the word fuck…?” Fuck was one of Soleil’s favorite words in English. It could be used in so many different situations, it was a flexible term. The French had multiple different words to mean what the English just used fuck for, so he didn’t understand why anyone would use anything but. He didn’t take children around into account - he never really had. Nine times out of ten, Soleil blocked children from his thoughts. He was not a fan of them, and he didn’t know why he’d adjust his behavior around them. It wasn’t as if they’d never hear the word fuck in their lifetimes.
He was grateful for Evie and her friendship, and he understood when she was trying to pay him a compliment, but he didn’t particularly want to start another fight about how art theft wasn’t something to be proud of. He’d tried dropping hints to Gabriel time after time that he’d reproduce any art Gabriel wanted him to, but he supposed he’d been far too subtle, because the art theft continued. Not that he wanted Evie to be out of a job, but weren’t there other things that could be stolen for Damien? He pursed his lips to the side slightly as he walked away from his painting on the wall, trying not to think about someone ever trying to steal his art. If he was long-dead, sure, whatever. But stealing art of artists who are struggling to survive in this hell of a city was cruel. Soleil loved New York - don’t assume otherwise - but he knew that it would be difficult to survive on an artist’s pay alone. He was grateful for the assistance his parents provided him.
Soleil rolled his eyes at Evie’s nervous laughter. “Mhm…” he murmured, looking over at her. “Just because you are roommates, right… you absolutely hate being in front of Tyler’s lens, despise being the only thing he’s concentrating on for hours at a time.” He was teasing her in the most friendly way he could. He knew how Evie felt about Tyler - it was obvious to him, and it had been since they were all in school. It was almost ridiculous that Tyler couldn’t see it - and just the same that Evie couldn’t see that Tyler felt the same way for her. Evie even checked off both of Tyler’s requirements: older and beautiful. That thought made him chuckle to himself - Evie wasn’t the sort of older that Tyler usually meant, but she was, technically, older than him. “Thank you - I appreciate you attempting to help, but do not put in too much effort for my sake… I am sure there is someone who would be willing.”
When they arrived, Soleil realized that the restaurant was higher-end than he’d been expecting. While in college, they’d never even think about coming to this place. Soleil could have afforded it, sure, but Evie? No way. Art theft paid more than art itself, it seemed. He tried not to work himself up at his own thoughts as they were led up to a rooftop seating area. Looking around, he nodded. “It is beautiful…” He took his seat across from her, reaching for his menu as he leaned back in his chair. Melanie. He’d heard about her time and time again from Evie, though he’d never had the pleasure of meeting the woman. He’d never met most of the high-up Corsicans. He’d tried, numerous times, but never fully succeeded. He appreciated Gabriel and all that he did, of course, but he had joined up with them to create a second family in New York, and that didn’t seem to be happening. Maybe it was because he was stuck in his studio for such extended periods of time every day. Maybe it was for other reasons. What did he know? “Well… you know I trust you. So I suppose I trust her, as well - if you trust someone, so do I… It is truly beautiful. A view like no other.”
Evie tried her best to contain her laughter, “fuck is a good word, I’ll give you that. You can add that anywhere into a sentence and change the entire meaning. It’s fun, but boink, it just… Describes the exact way I feel about it,” she shrugged. She just liked the sound of it, wasn’t even sure where she had picked it up from. It made everything less serious. Fuck was a serious word, but for someone who was actively trying to avoid serious contexts boink seemed to combat that.
Serious contexts such as the very one she was trying desperately to skirt around. She knew that if there was anyone who knew about her true feelings for Tyler, it was Soleil. She didn’t try to hide it around them, not when her crush first started developing. She always considered herself a closer friend to Tyler, even when the three of them were fooling around with each other she was sure she had only agreed to it so that she could get closer to him. It was only after they discovered Tyler’s affair that he drove a wedge between the three friends and Evie found herself confiding more in Soleil. She was jealous by nature, and often that jealousy was displayed through impulsive acts. There was no hiding her feelings from Soleil though.
“Yep. Only because of the roommate thing and nothing else that you said,” she gave him a quick nod. She didn’t like talking about feelings. It was probably the whole reason why she had gotten into this mess with Tyler in the first place. “We are just roommates,” she repeated back to him, trying to convince herself more than she was trying to convince him. Even if she knew that wasn’t the truth and would deny it, but the soft blush that had painted it’s way on the apples of her cheek would suggest otherwise. “You could put up a Craigslist add, although you may have to sort through all of the crazy people. You know what, don’t do that. I’m sure if you just put the thought out into the universe that something will come your way.”
The restaurant they were at was one that Evie would only dream of going to, but working with Damien meant that she could dream anything and have it at the snap of her fingers. She wasn’t entirely sure how she gained his trust or how she worked herself into being his favorite little thief, but she wouldn’t do anything to change that or betray his trust. Not when he had been the only fatherly figure in her life. She remembered how it felt to lose that the first time she had messed up with her first family that gave a shit about her. She would do anything to ensure that she would never lose his trust in her.
Evie offered her friend a small smile, “you’ll have to meet her sometime, I’m sure she’ll absolutely love you. I can text her and see if she wants to meet sometime this week if you want?” she suggested. She wasn’t sure how it had happened, but she was quite close to a lot of people who were higher up in the Corsicans. Everlee didn’t want to leave Soleil behind considering she only knew about them through him, but he didn’t like what she had been involved with, so it was harder for her to be with him when she was with them. “Okay so, and you don’t have to agree with this, but I was thinking we could split some things so that we can try as much possible. I’m totally fine with bringing home leftovers too, I’m sure Tyler will love me for bringing back some good food. It’ll be better than the hot pockets and frozen pizzas we have at home. But we can get a few entrees and just split it between us? Unless you find something you’re dead set on getting in which case, I’ll just stick with the salmon and the mimosas.”
