Practical Japanese Vocab: Coupons

I got some coupons from 7-Eleven yesterday so here's some vocab from them:

目印（めじるし）mark (for quick identification)

対象（たいしょう）target, coverage, subject (of taxation etc)

対象外（たいしょうがい）not covered by, not subject to

標準価格（ひょうじゅんかかく）normal price

税抜（ぜいぬき）tax excluded

値引き（ねびき）price reduction, discount

併用（へいよう）combined with, using together

本券（ほんけん）this ticket

該当（がいとう）corresponding to, applicable to, relevant to, coming under, qualifying for

販売（はんばい）sales, selling, marketing

店舗（てんぽ）store, establishment, restaurant

取り扱い（とりあつかい）treatment, service, handling

異なる（ことなる）to differ, to be different

I understand that people have enough money to order things from Japan and start reading immediately. I don't have enough money to spend it online. I checked web site you linked for free japanese books but I don't know where to begin. How can I begin? What should I read first? Is there any place with audio that goes with book so I can check my pronunciations to?

Hi! Of course, that's understandable. There's always at least one great free option. In this case, much more than that. You can begin with this site I already shared:

I opened it on Level 0, which is stories with audio for absolute beginners. You'll notice there's level 0 to 5. So you can just go through it from 0 up, depending how fast you learn. Maybe you'll learn faster than you can go through all materials for one level.

There's also this youtube channel, which has stories written in Japanese with furigana above, female narrator, key words in English and illustrations.

I think there's 125 stories in this playlist for N5. These two resources should be more than enough to solidify what you've learnt.

Same channel has a playlist to learn and practice Japanese pronunciation.

3. AIが生み出す偽情報 ウィズフェイク時代をどう生きるか

This weeks vocabulary. This was a fun article to see how the Japanese language talks about AI and how it's influencing our lives at the moment.

The article was long so I will be doing the second half for next week!

Currently also trying to finally learn Spanish and also Python. So, just small chunks of everything for now.

Comp Ling Intro

Currently I have decided to start learning more about computational linguistics and transition from my career/background in ESL teaching/Japanese translation. To start, I am currently teaching myself Python. I am using Linkedin Learning to do so for now with this Python from Zero course. Let me know if you tried or what resources you've liked to learn python yourself.

With that, I will try to do my first project of making a simple website.

Made a Codeblr 😊! Anyone else into languages and/or linguistics also curious about coding or in the dev/software engineering field?

I thought to switch things up since coming back to the stats and getting my masters in Linguistics. It's hard to find teaching jobs that are stable and pay well. My current job is also transitioning towards AI so I thought I might as well get ahead of the game a bit. 🤷‍♀️

I'll have a lot to learn (and tbh it would be great to get my PhD but I want to live life atm lol) and I am hoping to incorporate my background in linguistic with the ideas of raciolinguistics and linguicism and how that influences TTS and speech recognition by AI and modern devices. I think that would be fun. Anyway, please feel free to share resources with me and I will be posting them as well!

Hello~! I've been on hiatus for a bit over a year now. A lot has changed and I am almost graduated with my masters. But, I want to get back into studying Japanese (and French) again. I will review first via memrise. This is the schedule I have for my decks so far. This is the first deck (N2 Vocab) I'll be starting with if anyone else would like to do it together!

Hello. Hi. yeah... Uh.. This was posted 6 months ago. I did all of this for maybe a week. I don't even have the file that I made this schedule on 😂. To be fair, I was working full time and a full time graduate student. It was a lot to juggle... Now, I am graduated, so I should be able to start dedicating more time to this now.

I guess I will still aim for N1, however, now that I am not living in Japan anymore, I am kind of mostly hoping to just keep up with my Japanese and not lose it and still be able to use it in some way.

It's been pretty sad to not be able to use or hear it regularly anymore. At the moment, my main goal is to just grow my habit of studying language again. I also need to learn Spanish ASAP ;((.

So as a continuation of this post I made in frustration about how anglo-centric most “must-read” book lists are, I went and found a few lists with a focus on non-English speaking authors (sorted by number of books listed):

8 Must-Read Foreign Books Translated Into English (Babbel)

The non-western books that every student should read (The Guardian)

10 best translated fiction (Independent - has suggestions regarding editions + prices)

49 Incredible Books From 49 Different Countries (Huffpost - has amazon links to all the books, which is great to find the editions but please please please support your local bookstores!!!!)

100 Must-Read Classics in Translation (BookRead - Amazon links again. Most bookstores will offer to order books for you if they don’t have them, please utilise their services and support local shops whenever possible!)

All these lists have reviews and feature books from a wide range of countries. I haven’t read every single review but I browsed the lists to make sure they wouldn’t all just name the same books and they don’t!!
