Anyway it’s so fucken ableist how medical marijuana patients don’t get employment protections. Sorry but I am 50x a better worker when I’m not in excruciating pain and not about about to die from anxiety, and actually can focus.

It’s ridiculous. My options are to either not be in pain and not be able to pursue my goals, or be in tremendous pain while pursuing my goals. And I don’t know which I’d rather do tbh. I have so much potential and so much to give. I’m 19 and I have all my certifications for this shit and experience too. I have the perfect background. But because of the medicine I use, the only medicine that really actually offers any relief, nobody wants me. It’s not even illegal here.

Inspiration porn like the oft used quote, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude” only contributes to the stigma both internalized and external that disabled people deal with on a daily basis.

I’ll elaborate; by saying that the only disability is a bad attitude, you are essentially saying that disabled people who don’t “overcome” their disability to society’s standards are not trying hard enough or worse, that they’re lazy.

We can internalize this toxic message and feel bad when our symptoms or limitations prevent us from achieving goals in the same manner as the abled person. It can lead us to work ourselves to the point of exhaustion in a non assessable way.

In short: if you give a damn about disabled people, stop spreading this highly toxic message and instead, acknowledge that the disabled person faces unique challenges that require accommodations and support to “overcome” and that there are some things that are not possible for a disabled person to do and that’s ok. We all have limitations and we have to learn to work within them.

I’m conflicted cause he definitely needed to die, for everyone’s safety. And I absolutely do not trust the justice system to do it. But I’m not sure I believe in bringing cruelty into it. Like even the worst of us don’t deserve to be burned to death.

I’ve had classes teach me about racism and the history of racism. I’ve had classes teach me about sexism and the history of sexism. I’ve had classes teach me about LGBT+ rights and the history of LGBT+ rights. 

I’ve never had a class that even mentioned ableism or the history of ableism. No disability rights; nothing. Even my health classes managed to entirely avoid the topic.

It’s no wonder people lack even a basic concept of how to treat disabled people. Why they’re weird around wheelchair users. Why even doctors have little understanding of the chronic condition.

I support right to die legislation and I’m glad this woman was able to die on her own terms. I can only hope that will be an option for me if and when I need it. I don’t agree with the people saying that the doctor ‘murdered’ her… to suggest that she was a victim here is to ignore her ability to make choices for herself.
