Now, I don’t have any furniture for my dolls. I only have props like electronics and such... But I tried. I ended up taking three pictures though. I needed an in-betweener for effect. :D

G? G… is for Graphics tablet! Here’s Serenade showing off his chibi drawing skillz. He’s drawing the musical alter egos of himself and his friend, Ade and Iro!

… Yeah. I guess that’s a valid complaint. I think he will stick to his tiny pencils for now. But at least you get a small glimpse at his drawing style! This boy doesn’t care for realism! He’s all about them chibis since he learned to draw from his older brother who was all about Mega Man and such art styles at the time. :>

When I was taking pictures for the computer screen prompt, I also discovered that my phone has some built-in filters. And since I haven’t had time to take pictures yesterday or today, have a random shot where I was checking what the said filters do. :U Jill looks pretty wild like this!

BJD Photo Challenge: February

For @bjdchallenge‘s first prompt! “Post a photo of your first BJD.”

I spoke about my tastes in dolls changing before in This post, but I guess I could elaborate further on some points about the DOLLS themselves!

This question is always tricky since I no-longer have my first doll and my second doll, Vincente, is currently disassembled for possible mods and face-up. And to make it EXTRA tricky, I got both of them before I got my first laptop which means my old photos are not on my old laptop or Google Drive or anything. They’re stored on my family’s old tabletop computer which hasn’t been used for like 7-8 years. I only have three photos of them on my DeviantArt and the one of Vince is from when I had him cosplay Mello from Death Note to practice making burn scars. :’D But I guess I could post the two pictures I HAVEN’T shown here before!

The first one is of Felicia, a doll I’ve since sold and whose character is still in search of a new name. Also featuring the first piece of doll clothing I ever made; her dress!

And then there’s Vincente as Mello. xD Gotta love that focus being on the plants instead of him.

... Yeah. Yay for photos I took in 2009!

February BJD Photo Challenge

So uh. For this prompt by @picturethisbjd:  “#1: post a photo of your doll with a computer screen background!”

Though it was already getting dark out and I still don’t have a camera much better than my phone. So I took a random photo of Jill in room lighting, grabbed an old abstract traffic photo from my Drive (I took it in like high school... xD) and just edited the Jill picture so she matched the photo somewhat. Most of my dolls are too big to pose in front of my laptop screen so editing was the only way to get a doll on a background like this. O_o

... Editing photos isn’t one of my strengths, no. XDD

From left to right-. Pukifee size shoes from a (retired..?) Etsy shop, dollb. MSD shoes from Dollheart and SD shoes from Luts! The Luts shoes are actually the first ones I bought myself and got them alongside Vince. :> I love themmmmmm.

11. Do you have a doll you love but will probably never have?

Again skipping a couple of questions because I don’t think my answers would be too interesting. xD (In a nutshell... I prefer human characters over animals/anthros, like all BJD sizes and of course I talk to my dolls.)

As for THIS question. Hmmm... Well, I used to be this way about the RIngdoll Fat Happiness but then I actually DID get one after years of searching so at the moment I have this “everything is possible if you have patience” mentality. xD

All of the dolls on my wish list are basic editions I could easily get from the company. Well, I guess there’s two exceptions and those are basically “I want a Granado body and would prefer a Granado head but there’s not been one suiting the character yet” so I’m still waiting for those to pop up.

But if we want this “doll I prolly will never get”, we could go back to yesterday’s post. Ah, a blue skin doll... Who wouldn’t turn green with age... I would love that. Then I would just get a Granado Titan in blue skin and make him some insane paladin armour. >:U But er. Yeah. Green skin would be very wrong for the character... *Deep sigh* I could just dye the head, hands and upper torso blue and cover everything else up but UGH. Maybe in 5 years I’ll reconsider that.

Or then we can talk doll characters I want but prolly never will get. Like Tacion who would need floating, disembodied arms with purple fire (YEAH, SURE) and Areylen who would need metal hair that basically turns into liquid mercury halfway. Oh and skeletal wings that drip translucent goop (M-HM. VERY DO-ABLE). So I’m just gonna sit here and just draw those characters instead of making dolls of them because YEAH NO.

(Technically I’m still tempted by Tacion. You know... I could get him as an Unoa and just use wire for the floating arms.... Like a really long wire and photoshop it out and paint fire in. :’D But we’ll see.)

7. How much does yellowing bother you?

On NS dolls? Not much. Most of my dolls are “NS Yellow” so the yellowing isn’t too obvious. And on Vince yellowing has actually been a good thing! His character should be Italian and I’d prefer him to not be... super pale. I could excuse it with his heritage but eugh. I don’t want to! BUT! Yellowing has made him slightly darker! With some nice blushing he should look less pale than he did when I first got him over 8 years ago. :>

But WS and TS dolls? Oh boy... Well, on WS it may be okay if the doll’s character isn’t supposed to be paper white. One of mine, Zesil, SHOULD be paper white with gray blushing but HAHA. That doll was never pure white! So I just blushed him HEAVILY using grays and blacks. Just to cover up the yellowish tints (or the green tints on the head). 

(He still has this faceup. Lol. It’s so old but I know I still can’t make a better one so it stays. XD And yes. I will blush the body to match... Someday. I hate blushing bodies because I know it will rub off.)

Meanwhile, I only have two tan skin dolls (and considering a third) and I’m TERRIFIED what yellowing might do to them. Will they go green? I guess with Tai that might be okay considering he should be undead, but the others? Oh boy... Luckily, those have not noticeably yellowed yet as I’ve kept them away from sunlight.

AND. Well, I’ve stated a few times that I’d love to have a blue skin doll. But. I don’t want a green doll. So haha... I have a feeling a blue doll will just be a dream. Unless I suddenly decide to dye a Granado Titan blue. Yeah. Nnnnnnot gonna happen... Probably... I still am tempted... Q~Q

6. Acrylic, glass or urethane? And why?

I’d say... all of them. Even silicone. It’s more a matter of manufacturer than material to me.

I LOVE Urethanes but I always have this certain fear of scratching them or having them go yellow since they ARE quite pricey and you can never be sure if you can replace them years down the line. I have ordered custom urethanes several times and I gotta say... The quality varies a lot between artists. I have some eyes that look like glass eyes in quality (As in, so well made I could mistake the material for glass if I didn’t know I ordered urethane) and eyes that really only work for temporary eyes until I find the perfect pair because they feel so light and... cheap.

Like below is my favourite pair of eyes. Custom-made urethanes from Enchanted Doll that are just so pretty and shiny. (Yay, trying to take Pukifee close-ups with a camera phone. o_o’ And Sener needs a face-up, yes.)

I’ll just put rest under a cut.

Acrylics then again have a nice amount of detail and variety. (Also. Glow-in-the-dark acrylics. And metallics. Aww yisss.) They also tend to have very reliable quality unless the print under the lens is grainy. I just don’t feel so stressed over maintenance of acrylics!

Meanwhile glass... I’ve never seen glass eyes with realistic patterns in them. They’re great for stuff like glitter eyes and such but eh. I only have like one doll who wears eyes like those. I LOVE the smooth surface and glossiness of glass eyes, though. But it’s rare to find glass eyes that are not just a solid colour iris with a round pupil. But when they fit a doll, I’m very happy to have eyes that aren’t too fragile. :>

Also. Silicone. I love the detail in silicone eyes and the fact they fit easily into any eye socket. But hate the fact they gather dust like CRAZY. Like holy CRAP. Though I’ve also heard of silicone eyes going foggy with age..? I wonder if that is true or just an individual case. Hard to say since I only have one pair that has hardly seen any light ever.

I love to collect doll eyes. :D Mostly glass and Acrylics. You know. Juuust in case I’ll one day get a doll with eyes like these...... :> I kinda want to make some nice box with individual, padded slots for these... But I feel like that would take a lot of space so for now they stay in one small box like here. Because space is definitely one thing I don’t have in my room. 8′D

5. What are your thoughts on dolls with already pre-existing characters from movies/books/cartoons/etc.?

I actually used to have a couple of these and planned on getting more when I was in secondary school and high school. I was huge on Kingdom Hearts when I first got into BJDs and would have loved to have dolls of some of those characters! 

I had these floating heads I got for cheap once and decided they would make great Vexen and Marluxia. I just made the Organization coat for one of my OC dolls and would plop one of those heads on his body whenever I wanted to take pictures!

But well. I eventually got bored of Kingdom Hearts. So the Marluxia head was turned into one of my OCs while Vexen’s... well, that one’s a mod test head now. XD Kinda tempted to make it into some horror mod...

I just have an easier time staying invested in OCs. So I want all my future dolls to be OCs. Though it’s fun to see other people make BJDs based on game characters. :D Like this one blog I follow because they’re making a BJD version of Junkrat from Overwatch! Or oh, I once saw a Geralt of Rivia BJD on Facebook! So cool! Just not something I could stay invested in in the long run. :’>

4. How many dolls are too many to you personally?

(Skipping question 3 because my answer to it isn’t too interesting. In a nutshell, I would borrow money from my dad and do commissions to pay him back. No big deal to me.)

As for THIS question. Well, I know 20 is not too much. :D Probably not 30 either. I’m thinking too much would be so many I can’t find space for them. Though ATM I can’t estimate where that would be in the future because I do live with my parents so I just have my own room for ALL my stuff from games to art supplies to fabrics to dolls. 

Most of my assembled dolls fit in my doll closet though so I’m good. I... need to make some wigs though. But HNGH. Learning new skills is scary. :U I could easily clothe most of them with stuff I have but WIGS.

Definitely curious where my limit would be if I had a place of my own. That would be a LOT of space for my stuff. Maybe one day. For now, I just stuff them all in the doll closet with all the doll pillows or in boxes above my clothes closet. XD

Also. Here’s a shot of the middle-shelf because I’m sad Morsomies plushie is hidden behind the two boxes. *SHOT* LOOK AT HIM ROAR.

Do you have pre-made characters for the dolls that you get home?

Whoops. Didn’t get to do this yesterday because I got caught up in video games. xD But here goes!

But for this, let’s just say my first 4-or-so characters were made after finding a really nice doll while the ones after that mostly had a character ready. That’s because I got into roleplaying on DeviantArt in high school and thus had to keep making characters. Mostly Pokémon gijinkas, but characters nonetheless. And boom, suddenly I had over 100 characters and I had try try and decide which characters NOT to get a doll of. QAQ

^ Yes. Those are all old RP characters I want a doll of. Currently I have 3½ out of 8. Eep... They used to be Pokémon gijinkas but I’ve since rewamped them to not be Pokémon.

Of course, occasionally I still come upon dolls whose design is just SO GOOD I want to get it even if don’t have a character for it. Such examples would be my Ringdoll Fat Happiness and Doll Chateau Katrina. The Fat Happiness ended up being good for a chibi version of of a character I didn’t have plans to get a doll of, while the Katrina just got to be a fashion doll without much of a character. :>

I have no idea what pictures to post with this. Don’t want it to be a wall of text but I don’t have good photos of my Fat Happiness or Katherine... Uhhh. RANDOM OC PICTURES AWEIGH! Below is my Fat Happiness’s self-portrait!

YES. I got my first BJD in secondary school and I’m now finishing university (of applied sciences) and getting ready to become a freelance artist. That’s a couple of years for my art style and tastes to change. Getting BJDs definitely helped me get better at drawing by letting me have dolls of different body types for reference. AND as the bodies of SD dolls are usually mature, realistic and idealized, I eventually started to resent this “cartoony faces on a realistic body” aesthetic.

Just look at this quick reference between what I drew like in secondary school vs. what I might draw today...

The eyes... THE EYES. And then see how my tastes in dolls has changed with my first doll, Angell Studio Cinderella, next to a more recent addition, Granado Pluto (Liminka).

I honestly am considering changing the heads of some of my older dolls, especially the men with babyfaces like Bolero and Vincente. They looked like how I drew their characters like 8 years ago, but not so much anymore with my developed style. In a way I don’t want to because Vince is the oldest doll I own but at the same time HIS EYES ARE SO HUGE. Maybe I should just consider modding his eyes smaller. *Sigh* Same goes for Serenade.

Reminds me that I have quite a few old doll heads I should get rid of because they just don’t fit my new tastes. Urrrrghhh.

What sculpt is Liminka? Is his body from Ringdoll by any chance? He's lovely.

Ah, thank you! He is a Granado Pluto with some mods to his nose and chin. And yes, his body is a Ringdoll RGM-4 modded to have a hunched back and less abs. :> Oh! And his neck needed some thickening because Granado boys have really big neck holes. xD

There was a BJD meetup in my home town today (23.9.2017) and here are the photos I took when we lined up all of the dolls there. :> I had Liminka (The topless guy) and Serenade (The blue mohair wig man) with me because they are the most presentable ones I have at the moment. xD I only had my phone camera to use. Eep. Sorry. :U
