" hand raises to cord through loose, unkempt waves, mussing them up further as he scratched at the back of his head; shunsui even bowed it slightly, as if in mock apology, lowering his gaze once to jūshirō before standing up after. with sheepish grin, he glances around the quiet halls, even peeking his head out onto the engawa to ensure no one else was headed this way. " maybe i just heard you were here and wanted to say hey— "

with a heavy sigh, ( and a clear-enough coast, ) he plops down on the cushions next to @kamitakes, leaning back on his left elbow so he can fish into his sleeve, finally plucking free the bag of manjū he'd stashed away earlier that day. waving it in their direction, he merely grins again, expertly taking one in his fingers before tossing the bag into jūshirō's lap. " take one; there's no sake this time. " well, not in that bag. the bag with the sake manjū rested safely inside his right sleeve. " anyways, i got so turned around looking for where i said i'd meet my date, i wound up here. just my luck, i suppose. " it's a plain-faced lie, one he knows he'll pick up on immediately; that was how things had been going for a while : every time he managed to actually get a date, he was coming up with some new excuse to not actually go on it, instead finding himself heading to see the same person—same two people, really.

maybe that was proof enough that jūshirō was as good a brother to him as any : just as it had been with shunzan, shunsui could never truly fool them, either. by the time he finishes regaling everything he's discovered, he can't fight the heavy sigh which escapes him, shoulders slumping as if he'd been carrying some immeasurable weight upon them; he's nothing if not dramatic, playing up just how tired this all has made him, but … there's some truth to it, as well. the whole thing was complicated, from the treaty to the rise in yōkai appearances to the connection between the kurosaki family of today and the shiba clan's past— " they do all seem to have a habit of being at the scene of the crime, don't they? eyebrows raise slightly at the younger man's observation, it finally drawing a chuckle from shunsui's lips; smile curves upwards, broadening into a grin as he leans his head back a bit with his laugh. " you're right—no wonder i feel so tired from all this. " offering out the manju, he takes his own cup of tea, inhaling the scent deeply before taking a sip. " i'm not used to doing so much work; even my nanao-chan doesn't work me as hard as yamaji's been making me. "

Inclination of head downwards transpired, with his upper structure following suit just enough to illustrate appropriate respect towards the one who wields captaincy over the eighth squad. He allowed a set of words to echo cranial walls, whilst retaining a facade of clemency and courtesy. And the mention of his own Captain made a light chuckle to eschew subtle lips, consequently resonating the ambiance; for many reasons, some of them kept to himself and only.

" life is a pretty broad period of time for an old man like myself, so it's a little difficult to choose just one answer. but i suppose right now, life has been treating me rather well, even if i do have to put up with yamaji yelling at me. "

it's with a quiet humor that he regards the arrancar before him; hands tucked into the sleeves of his kimono, shunsui turns forward for a moment, letting out a gentle sigh. even so, the smile upon his face doesn't waver—if anything it merely grows, corners of his lips crooking up as he looks back upon miele.

" there's no such thing as too knowledgeable for any position, either, you know. just because i'm an old man and a captain doesn't make me any wiser than someone younger, or lower-ranked—my nanao-chan has made sure i remember that~ ♡. " a laugh escapes him, shoulders and chest rumbling slightly from the sound, before he shakes his head; hand finally pulls from his sleeve to tip the brim of his sugegasa up, allowing the other a less-shadowed view of his face. " you would be correct—i've seen more than my fair share of souls like that. but, just because i have doesn't make what i said any less true, you know. a man can think himself more worthy, more deserving, than others all he wants; whether he's a soul from soul society, a human from the world of the living, a hollow from hueco mundo—none of that makes us inherently worth more. "

his grin returns, as if to bring more levity to the conversation at hand; there's an almost nervous energy as his fingers twitch slightly, returning to their home in his sleeve once again. " well, that isn't to say unfair treatment doesn't exist : just that you shouldn't be made to feel inferior because of it. "
