HEYYYY HIIII SO I WENT TO THE EJEN ALI BEHIND-THE-SCENES FORUM AND IT WAS SO FUNNNN!!!
Here’s some fun tidbits they shared!
- WAU Studio started with just 5 people and their first studio is at the living room of Usamah’s apartment. They moved out to Cyberjaya after 2 and a half month.
- They actually left Les Copaque because they want a cooler animation studios (lol). Within 2 weeks they came up with the studios name (Wau) and the idea of Ejen Ali. Apparently Usamah gave them assignments to pitch any ideas they want and they finally landed on Malaysian spy idea. One of the reason is because their background is slice-of-life and simple, linear story, they find the idea of developing a smart story with twists is a fun challenge.
- Apparently none of the founding members remember who pitched the Ejen Ali idea so they have to just claim it’s a collective group idea. Usamah joked that everybody at the studio has terrible memory (lol).
- How do they approach writing? Apparently Usamah got offended when one of the producer told him straightforward that he is not a writer (because his background is art direction and so on), and he was advised to hire someone with a writing background, so he wanted to prove them wrong out of spite. Only to find out that he is, in fact, lacking xD so it’s a long learning process and taking short writing courses from mdec, books, etc. Apparently it’s a rude awakening for Usamah to find out that writing is in fact, different than animation direction and requires a different skillset. Even so we can all learn that when it comes to art, its all about persevering and learning. Pick up that pen and put down that AI program, folks.
- Apparently Shafiq Isa (the VA for Bakar) wanted to gives us the title of the movie as well back when they first teased EATM3 (!!!), but they decided not to because they don’t have enough materials/contents aka its too early to just share it.
- If I didn’t hear it wrong, I think Usamah already has the whole EATM3 script ready?! Just still in development, pretty sure.
- The moderator (Datuk Ahmad Izham) asked both Mr. Usamah and Mr. Fuad’s perspective on AI. They gave quite a safe answer to this - it’s a tool to enrich you, not as shortcuts. Mr. Fuad admits his stance is mostly on Generative AI, and claimed that the art process and decision making of Ejen Ali will not use AI, whereas Mr. Usamah said that AI is here no matter what, so use it to enrich us, not as a shortcuts. That’s what he told all his staffs. They don’t want to lag behind the advancement of technology, of course, but currently WAU has no intention to use AI during their process (yet). Why yet? Because if AI is proven to actually be useful and functional for artists, then maybe they will consider it, but currently its clear its harmful so no they won’t.
- Mr Usamah also shared that art projects is a passion you want to share with the audience - when you’re not intimate with the process (like using AI for shortcuts and art purposes), then your project is as hollow and lacking soul as any other AI-generated project. Our responsibility as a creator is to not provide the audience a project that is hollow, because then you’re just scamming people.
- Yes the company did downsize during COVID :( They initially had 90+ staffs, now only 60+. The collab with Disney+ Hotstar helps them to survive COVID, but post-COVID they still had to downsize and fired a few staffs 💔 it’s a hard decision for Mr. Usamah because they have been through a lot together yet they still had to go through this kind of incident and disappointing his staffs.
- You want to get into Animation industries? Know that behind one successful project, there is about 8-9 projects that have failed. Don’t go into this industry thinking you’ll be rich, and it’s also required a lot of hard labor and time. You have to do repetitive training and learning always. Worse part? Art appreciation in Malaysia is still years behind, so when you joined art industry, you are essentially suffering and making up for the lost time and having to catch up to something that has been left behind a lot. (In other words, be realistic).
- They said if you’re someone who wanted to be in animation industries, then start working and creating now and always learn from feedback. Start now and never stop creating <3
- The process of their animation starts with script department, then storyboard, then finally animation department. They always went through a lot of revision because each department has their own inputs. Each department’s goals is to impress the next department with their cool ideas (which is cute).
- Someone asked about SATRIA’s design. Why is Ali!Satria and Cero!Satria’s tanjak (the helmet part) is different, and Mr. Fuad told it’s because if someone wore the tanjak backwards, it means defiance and rebellious. Then Mr. Usamah shared that SATRIA is actually a last minute addition to EATM1. After IRIS was taken from Ali, they felt that the ending was too sad for the MC, so they decided to give him something new, so the ending felt a little hopeful. SATRIA’s name and initial design in EATM1 is actually a last minute plan (lol) and apparently the initial design is made by a scriptwriter (who also loves to draw), hence why SATRIA in EATM1 has a radical design change to its appearance in EATM2. Since SATRIA is a traditional name, they make sure the design and philosophy behind it is also traditional-related, hence the design of tanjak. Which is also why the activation line is “SATRIA, bangkit.” rather than something like “SATRIA, on”, “SATRIA, online” etc.
And since Cero was meant to be the opposite and evil version of Ali, they reversed the tanjak. Why? Cause it looks cool LOLLLL. Then they researched and find out that apparently wearing the tanjak backward symbolize rebellious and defiance.
In other words, the reason why Cero’s tanjak is backward is simply cause they think its a cool idea.
- One of the advice they gives for anyone interested to start a new project is to make sure your development phase, marketing phase, and feedback phase all ongoing at the same time. Back when they were pitching Ejen Ali, they didn’t actually have a finality but instead it is still WIP, yet they went around pitching the idea in hope of landing a spot. They took the feedback they received and revised the initial story. Hence why Bakar was changed from MC to second MC. Some fun sharing is:
1. Bakar is the initial MC of the series, but they changed it to Ali because its a kid show and they need the MC to be relatable to kids.
2. When they posted the teaser, they noticed everyone is interested in Bakar and Comot, yet nobody says anything about Ali. Hence why Ali’s design is radically changed from his first concept design to the current one we had.
3. One of the feedback they received is their character lineup is too male-centered. The initial lineup of MCs are Ali, Bakar, and Comot. So they created Alicia to balance it up so there will be at least a girl within the lineups. (The funniest part is Mr. Usamah shared that their response to the feedback is telling the feedbacker that Comot is a female cat LOLLLL).
- Lastly, they hope that the legacy of Ejen Ali in the future is that people learn from the story to not be afraid to change or taking chances. Ali started off as weak and had to earn his spot in MATA, and he hoped that the audience can learn from Ali and have his courage to take the opportunity and face the challenge in life like Ali.
Also, SOME SUPER COOLLLLL CONCEPT ARTS WAS SHAREDDDD (specifically the Ali’s nightmare sequence scene). Apparently Neonimus was supposed to work with Ali and Rizwan at some point but this idea was discarded!
I feel like the mentors in mata went thru some serious ass trauma cuz if you think about it , in S2ep13 we can see like.the pillar grave thingy . Y'know this

I feel like mata gave some terrible ass trauma to the mentors in the past to the point where the mentors just got used to it also what happened to bakar after his sister(aka Aliya) death like he gotta have some trauma or guilt from that right???
Definitely. Nobody who works at MATA is mentally alright. Even the junior agents already saw the reality of their job when Uno first attacked the academy, and then once more when Cinco ambushed the arena.
If you read the Ejen Ali Secret Files comics on webtoons, you can see that Leon used to have more expressions than just his patented rbf.
Whatever happened in-between this comic and current season must be wild. The only person who doesn't seem as affected is Bakar but you know how the trope goes; the more cheerful a person is, the more pain they hide inside.
