Did the other magicians notice how attached John Mandrake was to Bartimaeus of Uruk? Did they whisper about it when he wasn't near? There are stories of magicians and spirits bonding, after all. They may not have known about Ptolemy and his Rekhyt, or Khaba and his shadow, Ammet. But they would undoubtedly have know of similar stories. Did the rumors get closer to speaking the true nature of Nat's affections for Bart than Nat himself ever did?
