“An absent father is not a dad, Though for twelve years, that’s all he had. But this faceless father is just a man. And while not by blood, his dad is Stan.“ “Is he a son? Is he an employee? These are legitimate questions.“
that the brutal repression deployed against the universally peaceful farmer's protests has seen so little coverage in the lefty western 'media' is unsurprising but still demoralizing
She's facing charges of sedition, criminal conspiracy and other scary stuff. They keep arresting young adults so the rest of us get scared and quiet and it is horrifying.
She did not have her lawyers present when she was produced in court and had to plead her case herself. She has been given a five day police custody and it's very possible that proper procedure wasn't followed during her arrest.
Can we please bring attention to the fact that they used a picture of Greta Thunberg to go with this article? Especially when you consider this is a quote from Disha Ravi herself:
“People of colour are suffering from the climate crisis first-hand - a lot of people don't give us attention that we need. The fact that you would choose to listen to a white person on the same issue rather than a person of colour, to me, is environmental racism”
i think my new thing for this taz season will be goof predictions. like instead of plot and character predictions i’m gonna guess the jokes that will happen.
anyway someone’s gonna say the phrase “under the sea” and then justin’s gonna sing a couple lyrics of under the sea from the little mermaid but specifically the lyrics “darling it’s better down where it’s wetter, take it from me” and then griffin’s gonna make it a dirty joke and then clint is gonna jump in and then justin is gonna threaten to quit the podcast
if ive learned anything from video games the music for ethersea is going to fucking slap
whoever invented stuffed animals really just understood whats important in life. sometimes you just wanna hold a guy
Im sorry but this calls for a story time
This is Margarete Steiff, founder of the Steiff Toy Company (They make mainly stuffed animals in case you didn't know)
She was paralyzed due to Polio and was discriminated against very much for growing up in conservative Germany in the 1840´s, the townspeople literally arguing her father should just let her drown one time because she would never be “of any use”
But she was very determined to make something of her life, when an operation meant to help her walk failed she said she had to find something else to focus on, so she started sewing dresses, more importantly she started sewing dresses with a sewing machine (because it was easier to handle with one hand) wich received major backlash because bigoted people don't like new things or disabled people doing things differently
Anyway she also made needle cushions to sell, and these were elephant shaped, She quickly realized that children love these things to play with, wich was a fairly new thing because most toys were made out of hard material or rag-dolls at the time, so stuffed animals really weren't a thing
Steiff loved the concept and quickly turned to make more “animal dolls”, she even asked her brother for help going to local Zoos sketching the animals so she could use it as reference
The concept quickly took of and She was able to found a company giving work to many more seamstresses in town, but then the economy crisis struck and the Steiff company was on the verge of closing down
The last hope was a toy fair, if they could sell a large number of stuffed animals there it might save the company, And they indeed did get lucky, because they meet an overexcited American who fell in love with the stuffed bears they had made, for they were so life like, the man bought the entire stock and ordered thousands more in advance wich saved the company
Now you may wonder, why does one weird American need thousands of stuffed bears? Well to advertise for the presidency campaign of Theodore Roosevelt wich resulted in the stuffed bear becoming widely know as the Teddy Bear
dystopian YA novel vibes

A carbon-free world can be a reality. What would that mean for our jobs, homes and lives?
“Is it possible to turn things around by 2050? The answer is absolutely yes,” says Kai Chan, a professor at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia.
Many scientists have been telling us how the world will look like, if we don’t act now. However, others, like Chan, are tracking what success might look like.
They are not simply day-dreamers either. They aren’t being too optimistic. They are putting together road maps for how to safely get to the planet envisioned in the 2015 Paris Agreement, where temperatures hold at 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than before we started burning fossil fuels, this article from July states.
“Three decades is enough to do a lot of important things. In the next few years—if we get started on them—they will pay dividends in the coming decades,” says Chan, the lead author of the chapter on achieving a sustainable future in a recent UN report that predicted the possible extinction of a million species.
Making these changes won’t mean years of being poor, cold and hungry before things get comfortable again, the scientists insist. They say that if we start acting seriously NOW, we stand a decent chance of transforming society without huge disruption.
No doubt, it will take a massive switch in society’s energy use. But without us noticing, that’s already happening. Not fast enough, maybe, but it is. Solar panels and offshore wind power plummet in price. Iceland and Paraguay have stripped the carbon from their grids, according to a new energy outlook report from Bloomberg. Europe is on track to be 90 per cent carbon-free by 2040. And Ottawa says that Canada is already at 81 per cent, thanks to hydro, nuclear, wind and solar.
Decarbonizing the whole economy is within grasp. We can do this.
“If we have five years of really sustained efforts, making sure we reorient our businesses and our governments toward sustainability, then from that point on, this transition will seem quite seamless. Because it will just be this gradual reshaping of options,” Chan says, adding: “All these things seem very natural when the system is changing around you.”
Hoping people with more relevant knowledge and science parsing skills than I do might comment on this …
I think it is absolutely vital that people be able to picture The Healed World. Honestly I think it’s one of the most important things we can do.
Look at how many different apocalypses people can visualise. Our brains can freely feast on unlimited scenes of scarcity, competition and fear. Everywhere we turn we can consume endless content about killing our neighbors for scraps, about hurting children, about bleak planets and extinction, and lots and lots of guns. It is easy, accessible and cheap. Our minds gobble up as much of this content as the market generates and the market gleefully generates more. We feed and feed upon a future of suffering and loss. We feast on images of brown children being hurt, unnecessarily, and say smugly that “that’s just what humanity is like.” Our brains are programmed away from the natural human responses to crises (fix it, help each other, rebuild and hope) and TOWARDS the mindsets of fictional apocalypse (cause it, turn on each other [it’s just what humans do! We’ve all seen the same stories!], collapse, fight each other for crumbs, the world is doomed anyway.)
It’s pretty unnecessary. And frankly pretty cringe. Imagine being part of some of the most prosperous, empowered, educated, connected group of humans to ever exist, and having a brain that can only picture the future as apocalypse-movie.
And where is the food of abundance, equality, beauty, hope, diversity? Where is the actual food of the future? Oh. It’s in, like, three solarpunk anthologies, huh?
Huh.
Anyway not to get all Amitav Ghosh on main but we have GOT to address this unnecessary and EMBARRASSING failure of imagination. Because we are the generation currently failing in our responsibilities as caretakers of the earth, because of this deranged inability to picture the world as being a real place, and the future being a place where people will live.
So, basically, yes, let’s just say it and start saying it regularly. The work is now and we have to do it. It isn’t impossible. Yes there is hope. Yes it can all be done. Yes there is a future for fucksake. It’s within our grasp. that is what futures are.
Thinking About the healed world again
there are only so many world leaders, right? and they’re all beholden to sokka in some major way…
the avatar: will be 35 years old and still have a pavlovian response to sokka saying “all right everyone, time for bed!”
the firelord: so ride or die it’s honestly concerning
the earth king: owes to sokka his newfound knowledge of basic critical thinking skills
chief of the northern water tribe: his daughter seemed to think he was pretty dope before she turned into the moon
chief of the southern water tribe: thinks her brother is an idiot but has good ideas sometimes, and appreciates the fact that he doesn’t care whether or not he gets credit for them as long as they’re implemented
not to mention that toph is basically a one-woman weapon of mass destruction who does not listen to anyone—with the crucial exception of one person—and guess who that is!
and he’s basically an honorary member of the white lotus???
basically what I’m saying is sokka secretly rules the world
Sokka knows this and has begun using this information to fuck with random snobby nobles/push through random legislation
Sokka: So I’m thinking we make today national cabbage day in honor of all the cabbages lost in the fight against Ozai
Aang, a walking “eat your vegetables” PSA who is genuinely delighted by this idea: Sounds good to me!
Katara, humoring her brother: I suppose this would emphasize the importance of a balanced diet.
Zuko who thinks it’s a stupid idea but loves and supports Sokka in all his decisions: I trust your judgement Sokka. If you think this is a good idea, the fire nation is behind you.
Arnook who has no clue what is going on but doesn’t have enough of a background or a strong enough opinon on this topic to say no: If the other leaders think it is prudent.
The Earth King who honestly is just vibing: Yeah I like cabbages
Suki, knowing Sokka’s habit of making jokes at official meetings and wanting to call him on his bluff: Kyoshi had tremendous respect for farmers and those who produce, gather, and process our food. The Kyoshi Warriors will support this holiday.
Toph, who is about to get this stupid ass holiday passed because she knows Sokka is not bluffing and wants to see the fallout when the others realize it: Yeah I’m down. How many cabbages do we need for this? I can get us a couple thousand right now if you want.
some of you really need to be taken down to the back hay paddock that’s ready to be cut and be allowed to run through the long grass
go on, git
the rest of you are going in the river
so many ppl on tiktok will be like 'look at my epic style glow up omg my style used to be so cringe' and it just shows them wearing clothes that were in fashion in 2015 and then clothes that are in fashion now like baby that's what happens when u don't have ur own sense of style
got called “omg vintage” by a secretary in training at the dentist’s office on sunday because i wore a shirt that was in style five years ago like. ma’am i bought that in 2016
this is WILD you can't just leave this in the tags lmaoo
(cw: adult story below)
okay so basically the story went that he has. a fetish for guys with tats and piercings and this culminated in him getting real teeth KNOCKED OUT during a glory hole incident in 98 or 99 he can’t remember but basically the guy thrust in as he was catching his breath. and. teeth got knocked out. he was THAT HARD.
so he gets dental implants and continues on his way, assured that he’ll never have to lose any more teeth. he used to bartend blah blah and was always complimented on his teeth but he eventually got them SNAPPED OUT during an altercation with a drunk guy and he got different ones put in and was like “oh, so this is a recurring theme in my life” and decided that he was going to swear off bartending.
so he moved out this way and started his “dick-sucking career” anew, hopeful, wide-eyed. and managed to get a piercing snagged on his fucking tonsil and they have to GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM TOGETHER BECAUSE THE GUY IS STUCK IN HIS FUCKING THROAT AND HE CAN ONLY BREATHE IF HE BREATHES AROUND THE DICK. it was at this moment i remembered that one fucking movie where a guy gets his prince albert piercing stuck in a lady as a killer is busting into the room and dies because he won’t cut it off and run or something
also as this is happening i’m waiting on x-ray results so i’m just. there lmao
and he was talking about how the guy NUTTED. IN THE AMBULANCE. BECAUSE OF THE VIBRATION OF THE ROAD. IN HIS THROAT. AND THEY HAD TO SUCTION IT OUT. WHAT THE FUCK. but it turns out that there was a bad cut to his gums as well because it was a spiked fucking piercing so he just. had to get a couple teeth replaced. again.
and they dated. for 2 more years. until he moved to serbia or something i forget that part i was laughing to hard. it might have been spain. idk anyways
the bf got stopped by airport security because this was a few years after 9/11 and he had to take half his piercings which were not “safe metals” for metal detectors (“because DIY punks are hotter” was his reason??) and he was like “do i take the dick one out too” (no, but he did get taken to be privately searched.) and it ended up, that his boyfriend (the guy in the dental office) laughed so hard, after hearing this story repeated, that he slipped and smacked face first into the edge of a table. and LOST HIS TEETH AGAIN, and ended up walking around “like a fucking christmas carol about wanting two front teeth” until his bf sent him money to get them fixed and then broke up with him “for some hot young thing”
so he gets new ones! and they lasted! they really did! for years!
and then, #4, was on sunday. he was so “inspired” after he was allowed to go on dates again. because quarantine and no-socialising rules and shit have hit hard here multiple times. that he “went too hard” at a small gay bdsm gathering. and he managed to both bend his teeth inwards and fuck his molars up FROM DICK SUCKING. and he was like “i was tied up there, thinking about how many times this has happened. and how some evil gay witch put a curse on me for being too good at sucking dick.”
and he went on about how the kink club in question is technically helping to pay for this because they felt SO BAD and the guy who did this laughed his ass off and was like. i don’t have any money but once you get your teeth fixed - and the guy was like NO. I AM NOT SUCKING YOU OFF EVER AGAIN LOOK WHAT YOU DID
also this was told by the most middle-aged, boring looking man on earth. like picture an accountant, but gay and VERY clumsy and funny
text post redraws are Fun
This footage of Elmo after messing up a take on Sesame Street is peak relatable
In Elmo’s voice: “I only had three lines!”
Okay but please watch the whole video. It’s just over a minute.
1. Robin Williams making off-the-cuff jokes that are definitely not Sesame Street appropriate.
2. The slow zoom in on Elmo’s face at the end.
3. Robin Williams

If you haven’t ditched the Amazon-owned Goodreads in favor of the independent, Black-owned StoryGraph, what are you waiting for?
You can import your Goodreads data (so you won’t lose years of book tracking)!
You can get personal recommendations based on your current preferences!
It’s sleek af!
IT’S NOT OWNED BY AMAZON
Users can apply content warnings so you can avoid triggers before ever opening a specific book
The same applies for ‘mood’! Wanna read something sad? Find books tagged as ‘sad’, that’s literally it
IT’S NOT OWNED BY JEFF BEZOS
Addressing some comments in the tags: It’s true that the database isn’t as vast as Goodreads’ - yet. The site is much, much newer than Goodreads. But you can actually help them expand!
When you search for a title, you may not find what you need. Then all you have to do is click the handy “Can’t find the book you’re looking for?” link, and you’ll be taken straight to this page, where you will be able to help them find books to add to their database! If you can’t find that non-English book you’re looking for, help them out!
I had no idea it was black-owned! So cool.
I’ve been using StoryGraph for a bit over a year now and I LOVE IT.
Way better review system - you can mark things as quarter stars, you mark moods, slow/medium/fast pace, several things about plot, character, etc.
Tailored searches - you can search by mood as well as set various preferences and then search for matches.
Can add/view content warnings to books - no more skimming reviews and accidentally getting spoilers!
Really interesting and unique reader-created challenges
Tracks more than # of pages/books read - also tracks moods, types of books, length, fast/medium/slow pace, etc.
Also, to address the above comment- it has been about 7 months now since I’ve had to add a book to their database, and I’ve been reading a good mix of old/new/popular/lesser-known/etc. just in the last 3-4 months. The database has grown ENORMOUSLY since StoryGraph first launched and will simply continue to grow the more people use it!
yo I’m on StoryGraph as ladytabletop, please find me and let’s chat books! I am so glad to finally have an alternative to Goodreads and I am loving all their filters and options already!
Ok so can someone explain to me how cryptocurrency pollutes? Like what crazy calculations are they running that they need enough brainpower to significantly effect things? Like I’m assuming what’s causing the pollution is increased electricity consumption but… how does sending lil pretend money tokens back and forth or whatever cause so much pollution?
Also, what the fuck is “mining”? How d'you mine… like bitcoin is not a naturally occurring resource, and I assume that you can’t just make it, cause that would make it instantly worthless… help?
So you get “coins” as a reward for performing the cryptographic calculations necessary to update the public ledger which is the blockchain. This is, by design, an increasingly complex and resource intensive process to slow down the collection of (intentionally finite) coins.
So every transaction with bitcoins requires the ledger to be updated with the current ownership of every already existing bitcoin, which also requires encrypting and decrypting a bunch of information and sharing it across the public ledger. So every transaction made with bitcoins increases the energy requirements of updating the ledger making it harder and harder to complete the latest version and get the coin which is a reward for doing that work.
There’s a lot I don’t fully understand myself but the long and short of it is that the actual value of any crypto currency is pretty much just what people agree on, except instead of a fiat currency where a government says it’s worth something and a mint that makes physical currency, there’s a bunch of nerds who agree that solving certain math problems is worth rewarding.
Feeling like adding on for a bit of context, I know it’s kind of hard to understand how mining for really any kind of crypto is hard to imagine, but seeing what a bitcoin mining facility looks like for the first time really helped me realize just how energy intensive it is.
See all these warehouses? They’re quite literally filled to the brim with specialized computers that do nothing but mine, each one filled with thousands of these computers, just row after row of this:
So all the power consumption winds up adding up like crazy.
