I ran into this post years ago and to be honest, it has completely reoriented the way I engage with food.

Like. I’ve always sorta understood that things grow moldy or stale or sour or such if left out, but I never really internalized it in a meaningful way.

But now I’m just like.

Yeah. The hungering dust. There exists omnivorous dust in the air that will eat my food if I don’t.

Those bagels have been sitting there for a week. Are we going to eat them soon or are we leaving them for the hungering dust?

Pizza’s been sitting out on the counter for an hour. Everyone’s enjoying the pizza, but if we don’t want “everyone” to include the hungering dust then we should probably put it away soon.

That’s just. That’s how food works to me now. There exists an invisible predator in the air that hungers for your yummies, and it will not hesitate to eat your food if you don’t make the effort to protect and preserve it. And eat what can’t be preserved before the dust can.

ok so I looked it up, and it turns out they made a track out of PVC pipes, down a hill. The owner didn't realise PVC expanded in the heat, so on a turn the track just fell apart and the dude inside went over a fucking free way and into a swamp.

Part of the reason why I'm so passionate about being against the whole 'kill all men' mindset is because it does affect me directly as a trans woman.

If you're the type of person who automatically assumes men are bad people, then I have news for you. That assumption isn't going to wait until I tell you I'm trans. You're going to—whether subconsciously or consciously—assume I am just a man, and even after I tell you I am a trans woman your perception of me will still be permanently altered.

Discriminatatory beliefs aren't going to wait for me to tell you my pronouns.

I grew up in Florida, where at the age of twelve I was a victim of terror campaigns telling adults that I was going to sexually assault their children in the bathrooms, specifically because of the reason that 'men are all evil.'

I went through way too much at the hands of those people to see practically every ""leftist"" online continuing to push that ideology. Unlearn it. Please. It directly affects us trans women, too.

I still, to this day, have internalized this ideology, and I cannot look at myself in the fucking mirror because I think to myself people see me as a threat, no one feels safe around me. As a direct result of 'all men are evil.'

It doesn't matter whether or not transfemmes are your intended target. You are hurting us just as much as you're hurting everyone else.

You should know that I've written and erased a number of answers before coming to this conclusion.

Anger is not an emotion unto itself. Anger is an expression of fear, of helplessness, of frustration, of grief. Where there is Anger, there is something deeper, like the roots of a vine that might strangle you. If you cannot reach the roots, you will not kill the vine.

Anger, though, serves a purpose- to inspire urgency, to act, to move in the defense of self or others, to call out injustice.

Anger is only an evil when it is acted on without discipline. When it is allowed to become a reflex motivator, when it skips higher thought and speaks directly through the teeth and the hands. This is anger without control.

This question has forced me to ask myself if there is a difference between anger and hatred.

Is hatred irrational? Anger may be as well. Is hatred directed to the innocent? Anger can be, too. Is hatred akin to cruelty? Anger, again, is not innocent of needless suffering.

So what purpose must hatred serve, in pursuit of a just world? What can hatred do that anger cannot? What does it mean to hate something?

I'm not a scholar. I haven't studied these things academically. But thinking of my own experiences, and remembering the exact circumstances and contexts and the nuance of every little piece on the board, I can tell you that there was revulsion, and there was myself, and there was forces beyond my control.

I think that Hate is when anger fears it cannot win. I think Hate is when you are faced with something that you want to believe you have possibility of overcoming while suspecting in some way that you cannot. I think that Hate is when you are afraid of the thing that enrages you.

Hate, if you ask my opinion, is a bit like being mauled by a bear, knowing that you will not survive, and going for the eyes regardless, because it doesn't get to grow old and happy if you can't either.

Good for the continued existence of your peers. Bad for everything else.

So I suppose, if you are in a position where a bear is mauling you- metaphorically- hate probably isn't your biggest obstacle right now.

But if the bear is out there somewhere, on the other side of the forest, and you are sitting in a hole somewhere in a stiff rigor of rage and spite and terror, then I think it may be best for you to tell yourself now:

The bear will kill. Killing is in the nature of the bear, and a bear is helpless to change its nature. Knowing the nature of the bear, I will stay away from it, and deter it, and stay away from its path, and I will pity it for the nature it cannot compel itself to resist, and for the wonderful things it will never experience.

I do not need to fear the bear, because I understand its nature. I do not need to hate the bear, because I needn't fear it. All I must accept is that there is a bear, and it is wise to stay away from it.

It's unfortunate that the bear must live this way. It's unfortunate that you share your forest with a bear and not something kinder. But if you cannot change it, and it cannot change itself, then all you can do is accept that it is a bear.

And knowing that: be loud, travel with friends, and carry a big stick.

ok but i'm actually always fascinated with why creators, especially of a certain generation, are so in love with "the magic goes away, you have to return to the real world and mundane life" endings that they seem to very consistently apply them even to works that did not really seem to be building toward that and be surprised when the audience does not love it. it's structurally very similar to the 1980's fantasy movies that always end with "you wake up and realize this was all a dream" except weirdly applied to fiction that's been asking us to buy into the fantasy elements as literally real. like, at the end of labyrinth the goblins have not been annihilated or transformed into humans, they're still right where they always were, we're just told that happens to be sarah's imagination.

there's stories where this can work but it's ones where either (1) the fantasy elements are signposted very clearly and strongly as being at least metaphorically imaginary, and imaginary in a fundamentally immature way that needs to be grown past, from the start, or (2) the fantasy world is presented from early on as fundamentally tragic and carceral and something the characters need liberation from. like, if you imagine the characters in neon genesis evangelion or revolutionary girl utena or puella magi madoka magica reincarnated as regular humans with no conscious memory of their adventures - as the endings of some of those do suggest, albeit in kind of a fuzzy dream-logic way - then that's a triumph, they get to be regular people and live regular lives and leave all their pain behind and they don't have to do all that shit anymore! but that works because their adventures were both genuinely traumatic and also presented pretty clearly as a metaphor for unhealthy attachments and coping mechanisms they needed to break away from.

but then you apply it to works that don't have that kind of setup. like how to train your dragon spends two movies telling you that friendship between humans and dragons is possible and beautiful and enriches both their lives and the work of building connections between them is worthwhile and then it suddenly pivots to actually we need to permanently sever them from each other and that's a good and mature thing. digimon tamers does something like this, and jjba stone ocean. i hear star vs the forces of evil too, although i haven't watched the ending so maybe they sell it. good omens - i haven't and won't watch s3, so again idk maybe it works. but like, it's got this obvious theme from the start that heaven and hell as factions are both kind of shit and there's value in choosing to side with humanity over either, but i don't think that's really the same thing as presenting the entire structure of the world and the existence of any of these angels & demons as so fundamentally intolerable that it's a victory to annihilate it and replace it with a world like ours. (especially the tv version; i could imagine it working better for a sequel to the book, honestly.)
