He nearly screams, “ No – You can’t feed it that, oh my gosh! ”
Eleanor raised an eyebrow at the kid, hardly even phased by his volume. “Why not?” she asked, her voice monotone. “I sincerely doubt that the monkey has a peanut allergy.” she said, waving the peanut she was about to throw into the cage around as she talked.
“Sorry if I’m bothering you, but if you know anyone in need of a place to stay, I’m offering up rooms for rent in my home at an affordable price.” Ella handed the person a flyer and smiled.
Eleanor looked down at the flyer, then at the girl, an eyebrow raised. “Are you looking to get murdered?”
“Sorry.” She didn’t know how to respond to the glasses bit. She didn’t have to wear glasses, so she couldn’t relate. “I think it’s on the second floor.” Or maybe that was just a sunglass shop. She never went to the optometrist. Didn’t think she needed to.
“Second floor? Okay, cool,” she looked around, squinting her eyes. “Is there an elevator around here? Stairs?”
“Sounds about right to me.” Wendy said with a nod as she thought about it. When she extended her hand Wendy took it and shook it kindly, “I’m Wendy, it’s lovely to meet you Eleanor.”
“You too, cutie.” Eleanor said, winking at the girl, popping some of her popcorn into her mouth. “Love the accent, by the way. It’s adorable.”
Tootles simply glanced down at his options and picked one at random, only pausing to make sure it wasn’t too expensive. “Does this look okay to you? Since you’re a girl and all.”
“Not my taste, but then again I’m not very good at being a teenage girl. But if the color pink doesn’t repulse her, I’m sure she’ll love it.”
“that explains why you look like a supermodel,” she says, matter of factly. “you think you could help me find a phone case that doesn’t look like it was designed by a toddler?”
Eleanor let out a chuckle, tucking a hair behind her ear. “Mm, doubtful. But I’ll do my best. I have my Pepto Bismol ready, just in case we see anything vomit inducing.”
The lady in front of talked fast and he didn’t quite understand what she wasy saying. “Huh.. Eleanor h-how are you? Did you know whiskey tastes great?!”
Eleanor laughed a little. “Yeah, I did, sweetie.”
“I’M NOT DRUNK YOU’RE DRUNK!” Al yelled at them. He was pretty drunk he had no idea how he got here or how they found them. Al he knew is he wanted more whiskey “How’d you find me?” He said while dancing there was no music playing but for some reason he was dancing
“Ah, now you’re the drunk one.” Eleanor said. She was walking out of her apartment to do some grocery shopping and was a block or so outside of the gate when he stumbled into her. “I don’t know. I guess the stars are aligned. Destiny truly is on our side tonight.”
the girl’s snappy response almost makes her smile. she bites it down in favor of,
“do you work here by choice?”
“Nah. I am only a simple robot. My only mission on this earth is to turn iPhones on and off again until they work.” Eleanor said, completely deadpan. For some reason, she felt like she could be sarcastic towards this girl and not have her manager screaming at her next time she went to the back room. She didn’t have the look that screamed, “WHERE’S YOUR MANAGER?” or “What does that even mean?”
Tootles was infinitely more comfortable once they got right down to it, glad that he’d been met by an employee who wasn’t going to bullshit him. “I’ll just go with some sincerely cute,” he replied. “Last thing I need is to piss her off and, like, have her brothers egg my house or smash my mailbox or something. I’ll just put the receipt in the bag if she doesn’t like it, anyways.”
Eleanor sighed. The customer was always right, she supposed. She’d still try to pick something a little gross, though. “Alright,” she said, grabbing a few pink cases and handing them to him to look at.
“All we ask is for an equal distribution of butter on our popcorn. What has this world come to?”
“It’s a metaphor for America, I guess. Expensive and not equal. Still a lot of butter, though.” She said with a laugh, holding her hand out for the woman to shake. “I’m Eleanor.”
“Think whatever you want, but it’s not gonna happen.”
“Alright, then. What do you wanna talk about that’s not related to your teenage angst?”
Jack shook his head, reaching on the other side of him to grab a beer. After he opened it, he handed it to the woman before repeating the process and holding it in his own hand. “Don’t wanna talk about it.”
Eleanor took the beer and took a good sip. “Ah, give it a few more drinks. You will.”
“It’s quite odd how the popcorn spectrum works. It’s a mixed bag no matter what you get, no pun intended.” Wendy said with a little giggle as she tossed some popcorn into her mouth.
“If I’m gonna pay eight bucks for the stuff, I’d like an even coating of butter. Is that so much to ask?”
“Hell yeah, that’s what I wanted to hear.” Jack patted the space on the ground beside him, gesturing for her to sit down.
Eleanor sat beside the boy. “So, what’s got you down, kid?”
Wendy looked over to the person near her, “It’s a shame isn’t it? That they put all the butter at the bottom so you can’t reach it. So you just look like a fool sticking your entire hand in the bag.”
“My case is that it just sits at the top and then it’s flavorless towards the middle and down to the bottom.”
“Oh, uh – it’s for a friend from school. Technically my ex, but we’re pretty good friends now so it’s just a platonic thing,” Tootles explained. It was then that he realized this sounded a little odd; most people didn’t buy gifts for their ex-girlfriends. “I mean, I’ve got someone else in my life – I think? We don’t have a label on it or anything, but he’s a really great guy. But, y’know, we’re graduating this year so I thought I’d get my friend something special ‘cause she’s having this big graduation party at her house. I’d feel lame if I just showed up without a present and I know she’s super obsessed with phone cases, so here I am, awkwardly telling my life story to some Apple employee.”
Weirdly, Eleanor felt for the kid. “Okay, so you want cheap. No ex is worth more than $30. Really more than 50 cents, but depends on the case. Now, do you want something sincerely cute and girly, or something so pink it’s vomit worthy? Doesn’t matter what it looks like. You got the gift. Who cares if she likes it?”
