A: What’s really cool about a second name? I don’t know. I think maybe it’s rememberable.

"Where are we headed today?” The query left Beth’s mouth the moment she noticed Laura stir from sleep. She was seated on a chair in the corner of the room they’d sheltered in, gaze pensive as she read the graffiti plastered upon the wall opposite of her. Her need for sleep herself was rather limited; besides, keeping watch was a good thing, wasn’t it? Stretching, she rose to her feet, her boots barely making any sound across the floor as she shambled over to one of the boarded up windows to peer outside.
“It looks cloudy. Do you think it will rain? I guess that might impact our travels.” She frowned slightly, but the show of emotion disappeared seconds later. “Perhaps it will clear up.” She turned away from the window, blue eyes set expectantly upon Laura.

he offered, and it was honest. but his tone and expression held a slightly amused edge. why had they even made synths that were so tiny? unless of course, she was one of those made for infiltration.
“If you would not mind doing so,”
came her soft reply, head tilted slightly as she surveyed him. She spared another glance at the cabinet above, her frustration etched into the lines upon her face.

She landed haphazardly from her jump, startled by the sudden intrusion. Balancing herself on the back counter of the shop, she pointed upwards. A bag of caps, barely hanging over the edge, had been thrown on top of a rather high cabinet; she was nowhere near tall enough to reach, and had never seen a ladder she trusted not to break away beneath her. “A customer was not very happy with my prices. He threw his payment up there.” She frowned, her forehead creasing in frustration. “There probably are not even caps inside.”

“That’s how I like it.” Almost immediately, Laura was on edge, eyes narrowing at the point the woman seemed to be making. Perhaps it was suspicious that nobody knew her history, or perhaps it was merely because there were things others didn’t need to know. It didn’t matter to her if others misconstrued her purpose in Goodneighbor; Hancock knew, to some degree, what was going on and wouldn’t be one to interfere. “Sympathizers?” Her gaze cool, Laura had to wonder just how much the stranger knew… and how involved she was. “No idea what you’re talking about. And if frequency means anything, Kent Connelly must be the most sympathetic of all.”
Was she angry? Beth’s brow furrowed for a moment, blue gaze measured as she tried to read the other woman’s emotions. Quickly, Her own features softened back into a look of neutrality, all signs of confusion erased. “Hmph.” The soft grunt escaped her rosy lips. Her warning had been meant to aid, not aggravate. It seemed that Laura perceived her as some sort of threat. Assuage her concerns.
“I think you have mistaken my attempt to help for something more sinister.” Laura’s reaction did have implications as to her place at the Memory Den, fortunately. Both an agent and synth would be suspicious of her curiosities. A synth, however, would likely be more skittish, unused to being questioned in such a fashion. Laura had deflected her nosiness with relative ease. “I was speaking from experience.” Rumors that she was a synth were nothing new, but she didn’t bother to bat an eyelash at them. Nearly everyone had been gossiped about in a similar fashion; that sort of speculation didn’t mean that anyone was truly on her trail.
“People are not always so kind when they suspect you are not quite like them.” She held up her arms, exposing the scrapes and bruises on and near her elbows. By now, she’d grown used to being shoved around. At first, it had been jeers and heckling, but those that distrusted her had moved onto violence in recent months. “See?”

It was late, and Beth’s eyelids had begun to droop shut as she sluggishly made note of her inventory. Once the caravans passed through, she’d give them a list of supplies that needed re-stocked. She yawned, her eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks as she struggled to keep her eyes open. Alternatively, she’d do that if she managed to make it all the way through writing the list. Breathing out a sigh through her nose, she pushed herself away from her tiny desk, and ventured out into the street.
The cool air pricked at her skin, and she shivered as she leaned against the rough, brick exterior of the building. She heard the sound of footsteps crunching along the worn gravel nearby, and tensed in response. Beth had been ambushed at night before; she had been pinned an easy target in Goodneighbor for theft. “Who’s there?” she called out, brow furrowing as she inched back towards her shop. “I am armed,” she lied, peering into the darkness.

For a moment, Amy simply stared at Beth, waiting for some kind of catch… But washing Ant? That was easy! “Okay!” Practically jumping with joy, she immediately turned and darted off towards the pond. Ant remained still at first, ears perked as she watched the little girl run, curious as to what was happening… Then her tongue flopped out and she galloped in the same direction. She quickly surpassed Amelia, heading up to the bridge and reaching the edge before jumping straight in… and ignoring the 6 foot drop. Of course, the pond was deep enough that the dog didn’t turn into a splat on the ground; instead, a loud splash sounded, and water flew into the air… Just in time to fall down on Amelia as she reached the shore, giggling.
She trailed slowly after Amelia and Ant, letting out a quiet laugh as they both hared away. Beth couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy for the young girl’s life. She had never been a child, and had never known the naive innocence of childhood. She pushed the thought away as she caught up with her charge, grateful that she’d missed out on the downpour from Ant’s leap into the water. “Amelia Eve, I would certainly hope you are not thinking of taking the same route into the water as Ant.” Her tone, though mostly teasing, held a stern note. Laura and Liam wouldn’t appreciate her returning their daughter with multiple broken bones.
Bending down, she picked up a stick from at her feet. It seemed to be fairly sturdy, but not heavy enough to sink. She crossed the last few feet between her and Amelia, shaking her head as Ant paddled happily through the murky-looking water. “Here,” she murmured, holding the stick out to her. “This appears to be a good stick for fetch.”

lastofthepast:
Amari had apparently found a possible synth to help Curie; though Laura typically only went to the Memory Den to escort ‘packages’. She hated attracting attention, and outside of her own personal visits, such as to her sidekick, she avoided the place. A voice raised to her ears, slightly alarming- most residents didn’t bother her. She was known as one of Hancock’s friends, essentially rendering her untouchable. Being spoken to was… rare, to say the least. Still, her gaze immediately followed the sound, resting on the strange woman and bringing her to a stop. “Yes. I am.” Unsure of what else to say, her eyes turned towards the Memory Den- when all else failed, she could claim to be seeing Kent. “Is there a reason you need to know?”
Beth blinked at her, silent for a moment while she gathered what she could from Laura’s expression. “I don’t need to know much of anything,” she finally responded, rising from her spot on the curb and brushing away bits of debris from her jeans. “You are around with some frequency, but no one seems to know a single fact about you. It’s curious --- -- that’s all.” She’d heard speculation and rumors about Laura, but those weren’t worth believing. People in Goodneighbor would make anything up to impress or, in some cases, scare others.
She followed Laura’s gaze over to the Memory Den, skin crawling as she considered the sort of fate someone like herself would meet inside. Only true humans had the luxury of reliving their memories; synths would only have those memories taken away. “You should be careful about how often you are seen there,” she added quietly. “Goodneighbor may be accepting, but there are plenty of people who don’t take kindly to . . . sympathizers.”
deathclawjunkie:
Honestly, it’s the kind of reaction she expects, now. At the moment she couldn’t care less about a Ghoul or a Synth right now, even if she tried… she was far too tired for that; let the Paladin’s do whatever it is they needed, she was just a Scribe, “Don’t be, y’ get used to it,” is a quick response; a true one. She used to be welcomed here… but now they’re scared. It’s a notion that would easily eat away at anyone: to have friends fear you, “There aren’t any plans f’ Goodneighbor, if that’s what y’re worried about. Y’re safe, for all I know,” she says, glass clinking back against the table, gaze finally tilting to meet the girls beside her.
“Are you a Doctor?” the question posed holds a genuine curiosity behind it, her offer is an uncommon one. It has become, to a degree, foreign for others beside Brotherhood Medics to assist, “I, um…,” comes an eventual stammer, eyes shifting from the bartender, back to her, before finishing off the rest of her drink, “Sure, I mean… if you’re willing and y’ don’t mind, of course. How many caps do y’ want?”
Beth smiled faintly, a look of relief clear in her blue eyes. "I am not a doctor in the sense that you are probably used to, no. However, most of Goodneighbor trusts me with their health.” She paused, the grin on her face turning a bit wry. "I’ll allow you to interpret that as you will." At the mention of caps, she gave a quick shrug. It was impossible to tell how much she’d lose in supplies by treating the girl’s wound; she’d have to see it, first. “Let me take a look, and then we can discuss payment.” With that, she beckoned for the red-head to follow her before flouncing off towards the doorway. As much as she didn’t want people getting injured, it was always a little exciting to have some sort of ailment or wound to treat. She paused at the top of the Third Rail’s steps, waiting for her patient to catch up.
