I really just miss the simplicity of s1 I think. I miss when Hawkins really did feel like a close-knit town, I miss when characters weren't all over the place, and there was just some type of grain in the film, even if it was filmed in 2015. I also miss the character building. Jim was a divorced alcoholic. Jonathan was a 'creep' and had a rough upbringing. Nancy was your typical popular, pretty schoolgirl, but she was in love with the so-called creep and could handle a gun. And Joyce was just a single mother, being driven to the brink of insanity. I just feel like nowadays, there's no time for character development, or no thought put behind it at all.
I really miss when stranger things did feel like an eighties, small town, cop sci-fi thriller with horror elements. Now it just feels like a long, drawn out season of some shitty marvel cash grab show.
Will occasionally gets postcards in the mail.
No name. No address. No matter where he is.
Always of art.
Postcards of paintings from all around the world.
He likes researching them and learning about the artist, what the paintings mean, where the paintings hang now.
He knows she wouldnât be there if he went, but he still looks into the cities that the galleries are in. Reading about the history and imagining her telling him about it. Imagining her exploring. Learning. Existing freely.
He doesnât tell anyone because he knows she trusts him not to. Trusts him to not try and find her.
He likes to think she still checks in with him as occasionally the meaning or subject of a painting will hit too close to home with him and whatever the current thing that was bothering him.
He wishes he could write back. Wishes he knew how to check on her as she checks on him.
But since everything ended, his powers lay dormant. Only evidence they still exist are the small âelectrical faultsâ that are perfectly timed with big emotions and always end in a nose bleed.
I'm... so confused?
What was the purpose of the scene about queer signals, if Will was never going to receive queer signals? Why was the question concerned with the obviousness of signals, and not the mere presence of them? Why use the term "shared looks" when that was a known call and response on set for Noah and Finn?
What was the meaning of the snowball and avalanche metaphor? Why include that scene at all? Where was the payoff?
You're going to write an entire meta scene on queer signals of attraction, include examples that we have already observed, indicate an eventual pay off... and not let it pay off? Why? To be malicious?
You tell the audience through Will that Mike was just his Tammy this entire time and expect us to believe it? Was Tammy in Robin's video tape? Did Robin know Tammy since she was five? Did Tammy run after her in the rain or recognize her breathing over the radio?
And Will Byers never got kissed. Will Byers witnessed queer love, queer joy, and queer intimacy through a kiss at the beginning of the season, wanting that for himself because he's a romantic... and never even got kissed. Not even by his epilogue boyfriend.
btw lucas being the first out of the party to say will won't lose him and his face didn't change at all when will said he doesn't like girls. still s tier friend no notes lucas sinclair you will always be famous.

Happy "The Bear Season 4" to all those who celebrate đťđťđť
Carmyâs new direction
Reflecting on season 4, I think itâs in many ways, a journey for Carmy to be a better man - for himself, and for Sydney- prompted by Sydney and wanting to do better for her (I know how it ends, but walk with me đ)
It begins with what? Carmy meeting Sydney in the kitchen, with his lil chest rub- and her rejecting that-itâs not good enough, he needs to follow through with words, she challenges him to explain himself, he does and concludes he doesnât want chaos, he likes âthisâ instead: peace and purpose with Sydney. She also tells him to be less miserable (get him girl!) lol.
From there heâs on a mission of sorts, to confront things and tie up loose ends. He makes amends with Richie, listens - really listens, when people like Tina and Sydney give him advice - implementing changes like simplifying the menu, reaches out to Marcus asking how to change being stuck in a âgroundhog dayâ loop. Takes in his sisterâs words about not having to do something if you donât love it anymore.
He deals with and goes to resolve the Claire situationship - going to apologize (personally donât think he has to, for privately having a breakdown/panic attack and her overhearing him, though yes he probably does for ghosting her, but she could have reached out too, anyways). He doesnât though, say anything about wanting to restart things with her. He was there to apologize and move forward.
Leaving Claireâs, he prompted by that conversation to want to âfixâ things for the restaurant. And because he thinks heâs the problem and needs to remove himself for the best of the restaurant, he immediately calls Pete to change the agreement and remove himself. Handing his familyâs business to Jimmy, Nat, and Sydney - a woman heâs known how long lol, and trusts completely, to do that đ¤ .
He gives over control in the restaurant, trusting and guiding those around him, the âmenaceâ Carmy of s3 is changing-relaxing, listening and collaborating again, open to Ebraâs business ideas once Ebra is ready to bring his proposal to him(think this will resolve The Bearâs money problems in s5,since this side of the business is doing so well).
At the wedding heâs initially sarcastic and sceptical when talking to Lee, but once he allows himself to see his side ,also resolves that longstanding disagreement, this too helping him resolve some of his worries about Mikey and the past there. Encouraged by Sydneyâs interactions with Donna at the wedding, and pushed by her (just get it over with) he makes one of his biggest breakthroughs - reconnecting with his mother, when he goes to Donnaâs house.
We see him taking time away from the restaurant to engage in interests outside of cooking, relearning who he is outside of that, when he visits the Frank Lloyd Wright house. I canât see Carmy ever truly leaving food, heâs just exhausted by the way heâd been approaching it, plus it being complicated by his feelings over his and Mikeyâs connection with food (but heâs learning to look at what happened with Mikey in a more healthy way) and his previous toxic experiences with the industry in New York.
Even that - the New York trauma, heâs on the way to recovering from- he no longer has the New Chef flashbacks, the confrontation with him in s3, even if somewhat unsatisfyingly, seems to have addressed that. By the time of the wedding heâs able to look at his time in New York, talking about it with Sydney and Stevie with some humor. I donât think he previously could have done that.
When Sydneyâs dad is in the hospital, his only focus is supporting her, he wants to drop everything and go with her, when she calls and mentions Claire was there, heâs like whatever(and doesnât reach out to Claire after) and just wants to know how Sydney is. Immediately after this Shapiro calls. A Carmy of previous seasons might have immediately pushed Sydney about it, he instead gives her space to make her decision, not mentioning it, still in the kitchen with her, being chill, listening, supporting, focusing on The Bear.
By the point of the alleyway argument, he still doesnât know her decision, but is crushed by her not speaking to him during one service (lol, down horrendous) and because he canât bear to have disagreements with her, immediately seeks her out to ask why. This of course brings out the news Pete told Sydney. Yes he should have told Sydney earlier about the change to the agreement - but he did try to. We see him previously about to tell her but be interrupted- when Nat brings his niece to The Bear, then when Sydney gets the call about her dad.
Whilst I donât think itâll happen that heâll totally leave The Bear and food, in his journey this season of trying to do better- by Sydney and The Bear, he has for now come to the conclusion that the best way to do that is to remove himself. Even then as he says, heâs still going to be there to set her up for success and he has no doubt she can run his families, his cherished brotherâs business, but whether heâs at The Bear or not, in his mind heâs not leaving her alone. Heâs not a just business partner- heâs a friend- he yells. Of course heâs much more, but the point is heâs saying his connection to her extends outside of The Bear and will remain, whether heâs working there or not.
I actually love what this season says for Carmy, yes I donât want him to leave (and donât think he will totally - maybe step back with some involvement still, once he has time and space to relearn a love of food) , but heâs really trying, and thinking and being introspective about how to make things better for himself and for the things that matter to him- The Bear, and of course Sydney.
When you think about it, it's wild that Richie only got a share in the restaurant because of Sydney. He has been participating in mob activities with Michael and even asked Jimmy to get a bigger insight into the business in Fishes. He was told no.
He was offended that Mickey didn't leave the restaurant to him, and we know Carmy had a legal say in which person could be in the ownership of the place. So did Natalie, and neither of them even suggested it.
That's why he thought Sydney was doing it out of pettiness, because that's the way he is constantly being treated. Even if Donna also speaks of him as a son, and how much Carmy assures him he is more than a cousin, because yes, he has always been "one of them," but never on paper. There was always an invisible line, and he was right to feel it. Sydney basically signed the adoption papers Richie has been waiting for his whole life.
I love them so much
Their expiration dates have already been announced
The C Person: "September 2023"
C will stay in Chicago till September 2023 or shortly after when she will be relocated once she completes her residency in Chicago after studying in NYC, where she might come back after her "official" breakup/closure with Carmy. Relocation is super common for Resident doctors once they finish their residency.
Because the C person was only supposed to be in Carmy's life for 6 months.
They run into each other at the store in March 2023 (02X02) and by the end of S3 (August 7th, 2023) only 5 months or less have passed:
So my prediction is that that last month to complete the 6 month run she was supposed to have in the plot, will be shown to us in S4. Not sure if this will include a short-lived reconciliation with Carmy or not even that (I hope not even that TBH), but she will complete that 6-month run and then she will be gone. I have been mentioning that her role was about to become useless soon since Carmy has already had his breakthrough in several previous posts now:
The catalysts
Back where he belongs
The C file & her reverse psychology
But I came to this conclusion now after reading a comment by brilliant chef @ago0112 that pointed out that her exit from the show might have something to do with her residency, which makes total sense. Then I remembered that her deadline had already been announced from the very get-go: September 2023.
And that reminded me of these other 2 characters having similar expiration dates hidden in plain sight for us, as well:
The Eye Candy: "A few months Less than a year"
"A few months" only. Vague and ambiguous as their whole relationship is gonna be because he knows he's not here to stay.
The Joker: "Quickly".
He "wants to move quickly". How charming! That means that his arc is the shortest of the 3. He will be gone before he can get started. Not even months like in C's or Luca's case. We're talking days or weeks here. Fuck you, Shapiro!
Syd will shut him down "quickly" (as soon as S4 starts) and then she will sign The Bear's agreement and we'll go from there.
Bonus track: Comparative analysis of the agreements Syd has been offered in S3
Shapiro's:
Carmy's:
So, the only difference is the starting point's offer which is 80K annually in Shapiro's case, whereas Carmy's is HIS HEART, A STAR, HIS FAMILY, HIS FAMILY BUSINESS, FAMILY STYLE, 2 TOPS, BOOTHS, HIS BABY BLUES, HIS BICEPS, ETC 70K, but Carmy's offer may be even more solid/better financially speaking and emotionally because we don't know the % of the bonuses he offers her, and we know that in Shapiro's case it's just the one bonus upon review but Carmy offers her 2 a year, which she will never not collect, who are we kidding? So, actually, Carmy's numbers might be better than Shapiro's after all. But even if they aren't, this begs the questions: Is Carmy only worth 10K for Syd??? Would she choose Shapiro over Carmy just because this Jocker offers her +10K a year? Is that all Carmy's worth for her? If she doesn't choose based on the $$$ then but she considers Shapiro's offer out of spite for Carmy or to get out of The Bear in a desperate attempt to start clean elsewhere, is Shapiro the best option anyway? Or is she just exchancing one problem for another? Does she know this guy? And more importantly, does he know her? I answered SOME of those questions here already.
Remember to follow my tag #Gingerpovs đ
September 2023 was the wedding, which confirms my last dance theory about her. Gone!
Luca is still in Chicago and now staging at The Bear, but we don´t know whether he will get back to Copenhagen or will decide to stick around permanently in Chicago, he´s a mystery but I´m thinking, also a red herring and a Harry Met Sally kinda plot device for S5, so I´m not worried.
Shapiro, is gone right on schedule. Gone!
Lol!
Hey baby, how we doin'? Can you sit Uncle Carmy?
We give Carmy a lot of much-deserved shit but also we all know that he's a ridiculous level of hero, like a fucking literal mortal flawed human hero who has done so so much work and has the biggest heart. Carmen Berzatto is a truly strong young man, in every sense. All the Berzatto kids are incredibly tough.
Thus, watching Carm break down in the presence of Donna is excruciating. Syd reassures Donna he's "really good" which means he's "really bad," the worst she's ever seen. The amount of psychic damage we can't see but that Carmy must carry around...it's truly hard to watch it all appear on the surface.
It is painful to see him helpless and confused.
It's not OK what happened to him and we can know how bad it was because we can see on his face what it did to him.
All of which is to preface this little exchange of dialogue, which is sort of buried in innocuous-sounding fractured small talk during his quiet breakdown, perhaps with the purpose of camouflaging its importance.
"Soph..the baby."
"Yes. So cute."
"You've seen the baby."
"Really cute...So many people."
"You're an uncle."
"Yeah. Yeah. No I never thought about it. Right."
He never thought about being an uncle. It's a bit of a non sequitur. The standard patter is just to keep on about babies being cute and . But he's got a fixation somewhere in there on what is to be an uncle and how he is somewhat unprepared, simply because he never thought about it.
Growing up, he was always the baby bear, bullied by everyone except maybe Sugar and Michelle, weird, lonely, ill at ease, quiet to the point of seeming mute, unparented by Donna, but with his big brother Mikey looking out for him, and all the uncles.
He never had a dad to speak off, so Uncle Jimmy, Uncle Computer, and that whole age cohort were the dons who ran the family and who served as caregivers to whatever extent they could. (Note: Some people call Lee Lane an "uncle" but Mikey and Carmy both despise him and both deny out loud that he is an uncle.)
For Carm, to be now an "uncle" is the landmark Berzatto male coming-of-age milestone. But he never thought of it for himself before. He just never peered into that sector of his future. But the time has come and the place is here.
To be an uncle is to look out for the next generation and to be a role model and make sure things are getting handled. And in the culture of their family, he's the only one who could possibly be *the* uncle of the next generation. Mikey shoulda been it, but Mikey blew off his head on the State Street bridge. It can't be Pete, or Richie, or Cousin Stevie.
Uncle Carmen is now "the guy." But he never thought about it before. It never occurred to him until Sophie was born that "uncle" was a role he would be called to play, even though he was already Uncle Carmy to Evie. With all those people under the table at the wedding, even though everyone contributed to setting the stage, it was Evie's attachment to Carmy that finally allowed her to be vulnerable with her family and reveal her fear.
What does being an uncle look like in Carm's mind? When and where and how is he going to step into that role? He wouldn't directly tell anyone (least of all the audience beyond the fourth wall), even if he knew, which he probably doesn't yet.
But I think we see hints of something taking form in his heartfelt thank yous to Stevie and Uncle Jimmy over the course of the season for the ways they had helped him out over the years, and in his promises in the finale to the terrified Syd and the shaken Richie that everything will be OK. No one is going to be left alone. The family will stay together. The family will be provided for. The problems will be solved. Everything is going to be all right.
"I like this"
One of the things I noticed about The Bear is that every first episode has a SydCarmy moment that defines the rest of the season. It is always a moment where it is just the two of them, and what happens usually has a major effect on how the season turns out. First season it was the meeting between Carmy and Sydney, and it was her being hired on at The Beef that finally got the restaurant moving in a direction of professionalism. In the second season, it was Carmyâs failed attempt at asking Sydney out in the first episode, and that failure lit a fire in him that helped kickstart a speedy reconstruction of their new restaurant. Third season, it was Sydney and Carmy together after he got out of the freezer, and it was her disapproval of Carmy contacting Claire and trying to make up with Richie, that ended up building up his guilt towards Claire, which added on to so many of his other traumas that he was refusing to deal with.
This time around, the defining SydCarmy moment of season 4 epi. 1 was a very poorly timed confession. In the start of their conversation, Carmy apologizes for not being good enough, which Sydney disagrees is the source of the problem. Here, she speaks frankly. Itâs the chaos that the article speaks of, and she tells Carmy how she does not like it either. Who is the main source of the chaos- Carmy. Carmy is hearing a double meaning. You donât like Chaos and IâM the chaosâŚso you donât like me? He tries to get confirmation. Does she really associate me with chaos, which she just admitted to not liking? He then asks her if she thinks he likes chaos. She pretty much confirms his fears when she tells him how he could be so good if he didnât have this need for mess. He is the chaos, the thing she openly states that she doesnât like. And that hurts him. Badly. He tells her:
âCongrats. That knocked the wind right out of me.â
Sydney is confirming his worst fears. That she doesnât feel the same way about him. And that hit him right in his soul. Sydney, at that moment, doesnât understand the enormity of what this moment is feeling like for him, and she continues on with the conversation about his love of chaos:
âYou donât need it.â
And Carmy really replies with âAir?â because the dude is truly stunned at this moment.
As the conversation continues, Carmy tries again to defend himself about how he doesnât like dysfunction. He is trying to convince her that that is not him, do not associate me with something you donât like. When Sydney asks what does he likes, he takes it upon himself to push further, further than he ever gone before with her because he truly thinks that she is confessing her dislike of him. He tells her âI like thisâ, what they have, being together at this moment. He likes HER. But Sydney scoffs at it and criticizes his deliveryâŚand Carmy took that as confirmation of his worst fears. He ducks his head and tells her âThat hurtâ, and after she walks off, he stares longingly at her, eyes slowly watering.
The show will never lean into this but I think that it would be interesting if Marcus and Luca were the parallel to Syd and Carmy if or once they reach eventual stability.
The interactions between Marcus and Luca were small, but I think we got enough information that humanizes them on a good scale to compare them to fully fleshed out characters such as Syd and Carmy (Marcus more so than Luca, but you get what I mean).
Marcusâ situation with his mother, the fact he took on the responsibility as opposed to his younger brother, his football career failing and having to find passion in baking. Mirrors Syd strained agreement with her father regarding following her own passion after her failure and later on her also having to take on the responsibility over her fatherâs health. Both have an intimate relationship with failure and responsibility, something that has flourished into resilience and adaptability in the face of absolute chaos.
Lucaâs clearly strained relationship with his family given how he choked up while saying he has a younger sister âsomewhere,â admitting he was a troubled child (bad grades and possibly behavior), and his own self-centered phase in assuming he was the best; mirrors Carmyâs strained relationship with his mother and brother. He clearly has a competitive personality both due to Mikey but also as he ties in his self-worth to cookingâwhen someone else succeeds he inadvertently sees it as an âattackâ on himself (self-centeredness). Not so much an attack in the sense of jealousy, though he does feel it, but more so opening the pandora box inside his head that screams âYouâre not the best at this, then youâre worthless to your loved ones.â
Carmyâs self-hatred manifests beyond him being unable to accept he is the source of inspiration for others (Sydney), that his passion for cooking wasnât solely due to his familyâitâs also his. He self-sabotage every time he is on the verge of accepting change, this is why he has such an aversion to accepting Sydneyâs admiration and call for a partner as opposed to friend, because he cannot let go of the worth he has outside of what he tried to prove to his family (Mikey, his mom).
Luca seems to have found the answer to these problems, both in terms of his art/cooking and trauma. Luca is open to the euphoria of being admired and seen for his abilities by someone that truly cares for the craftsmanship as opposed to being awarded that validation by (possibly) his family, he no longer seeks to prove the sentiment of âI am good for something.â
Luca is open to acceptance, both of himself and of others (specifically other creatives). This ties in with him embracing the âLuca #33,â clearly being affected by Marcus reminding him that although Pippen (Luca) wasnât the best, his efforts and passion arenât unnoticed nor pointless (Pippen being in the Hall of Fame, Luca being a renowned chef). Luca inspired Marcus, Marcusâ willingness to be open to change and to be expressive with his love for the craft inspired Lucaâand that in itself is not only the proof his efforts have meaning, but also that Luca is confident enough with his self-worth to eventually see Marcus supersede him.
These details correlate with Syd and Carmy in demonstrating that if people with the same mentor and mentee relationship entailing admiration and partnership intertwined, packed with their own demons and philosophies are capable of standing on an equal and even ground, then so will Syd and Carmy be able to eventually reach that.
Basically, Marcus and Luca acting as a mirror of âwhat if?â or, yâknow, âhow about you get there already?â lol
(Thereâs definitely more to be said about Marcus, Syd, and Carmy; but I went for a bit more surface level reading on this post).
