ĖĖĖ THE ELEMENT GUNS : peter's most trusted weapons. this is a a brief assessment of what the element guns do, what they control, and how they work. rp partners are welcome to reference this as needed.
INTRODUCTION. this blog's portrayal of the element guns is highly cherry-picked from a variety of canon. some of the original influences from 70's canon (known as earth-791) weaved its way into current canon we know it now. to understand their function, we'll look at old canon, how that's been applied to current canon, then what's applied to this blog's canon.
THE HISTORY OF THE ELEMENT GUNS. before they were ever labeled j'son's guns or a weapon of spartax, they were first weapons crafted by the master of the sun (tmos). in this very early era, there's really no big "lore" to them. it's implied that tmos designed the gun (singular gun at the time) out of his own design to add to star-lord's arsenal. along with this, he also crafted the rest of peter's suit, which included a helmet that gave him the ability to fly and breathe in space.
i discussed this in a previous meta, but during this era in comics, the concept of "my accessories give me power!" became wildly popular. thus star-lord was no exception. the element guns are highly indictive of that at the time.
at the time, the gun is described to only be limited by peter's own will. with the power of fire, water, air, and earth, the main four elements are under his control. tmos makes it clear that the weapon is invincible.
its appearance at this time is right in theme with the time. it's sci-fi heavy and leans into that corny visual we all think of when we imagine "space pistol". as i mentioned before, there was no second gun at this time. that would come later.
THE ELEMENT GUNS: WEAPON OF J'SON OF SPARTAX. later on, when peter's original story (earth-791) is retconned, the element guns (eventually become twin pistols in later canon) are now a weapon of j'son of spartax. the retconning included j'son allowing meredith to keep her memories of him with the intent to one day return from spartax. along with this, he leaves behind his guns. sometimes for protection, sometimes to remember him by, and sometimes to give to peter as a gift ā canon varies on that.
from then on, meredith keeps these tucked away with the intent to give to peter when he's old enough. on the day of her death, peter is able to find these guns and defend himself from the assassins who've come to murder his mother. he's not successful in saving meredith, but the spartoi dna within him activates the guns, and he's able to fend off the assassins for long enough to escape.
he keeps these throughout his teenage years and ultimately takes them to the stars whenever he goes. these twin pistols have become almost as recognizable to the star-lord brand as the helmet, itself.
the earth-791 powers of the four elements are weaved directly into current canon. however now, you'll see them expand into things like manipulating lightning, and changing water to ice, etc. at this point, the guns have evolved beyond their basic capabilities (shooting water, fire, earth, and air at their most basic forms). rather than the gun being able to shoot the elements of their own accord, it's because j'son had the guns crafted with his own dna that the guns are able to function, and thus wield the elements. this change to canon heavily updates how spartax is seen and treated within the confines of canon. with this update, we can grasp how technologically crafted the spartoi truly are. from then on, spartax is treated as a technological powerhouse.
this switch to dna compatibility also deeply changed the importance of j'son in peter's life, for obvious reasons. it also forces peter to accept his bloodline, whether he likes it or not.
as far as their appearance goes, canon has mainly stuck with a twin space pistol look. they've always leaned into a sleek, but modern (for the time) sci-fi appearance. the colors change around from black, to grey, to a mix which is seen in the gotg (2021) game.
THE ELEMENT GUNS IN REGARDS TO THIS CHARACTERIZATION. as no one here should be a stranger to me saying: i cherry pick across many canons to ultimately build my unique portrayal, though i often heavily lean into 70's canon. the element guns are no different. as peter's most valued weapon, i aim to stay true to the original intent of giving him these weapons, while not neglecting the matter of family.
peter did not grow up with these guns, however, j'son still told meredith his true nature, which allowed peter to grow up with the belief (or skepticism) that his father might be alien. j'son did not leave his guns behind ā meredith, very familiar with farm life, already had a rifle of her own which suited her just fine. and thus, peter had no way of defending himself when meredith was killed. instead, peter arrived just moments too late when yondu + the badoon were already leaving.
this left peter with a massive list of questions in regards to where he came from, which he assumed would never be answered ā until he went to space and met tmos for the first time. it's here that tmos gives him the element guns. knowing the path peter needed to walk in order to focus on being the star-lord, tmos reached through time and space, and produced the element guns for him from spartax directly. (essentially, tmos waved his magical fingers and stole the guns from j'son's palace on spartax.) the guns bore the spartoi emblem, which allowed peter to find a new lead on his potential heritage.
from then on, the story continues fairly normally as my canon goes. peter seeks his vengeance, and uses these guns to discover his true ties to spartax and its king.
in regards to appearance: i take heavy inspiration from the gotg 2021 game. their design is smooth and transforms in his hands depending on which element he's using at the time.
FORMS AND KNOWN ABILITIES:
MELEE FORM: this form appears when peter is in hand-to-hand combat. despite the way they seem "backwards", the barrel provides an impact surface and a harder hit to his target. this also prevents his knuckles from coming into any hazardous objects, and helps his hand and wrist not break on impact.
FIRE FORM: dragon-like in its appearance, this gun is capable of withstanding and producing insanely high amounts of heat and flame. though tested, this gun can not extend hotter than a yellow-white flame.
known abilities: this form is capable of producing and controlling a high amount of flame and heat. the flame can grow in intensity and shape to whatever peter desires. the fires created burn only what peter so desires, and can be controlled via the water element, should it go out of control.
WIND FORM: this form can control wind at its most basic form (creating and manipulating gusts) and can alter the oxygen within the air. furthermore, it can withstand and create tornado level pressure and gusts.
known abilities: these guns can create any sort of atmospheric disturbances. by combining the elements, peter can also do things with this form like creating dust storms, typhoons, firestorms, and so on. its through this form that he's able to create and manipulate lightning as well. he can create a forcefield with these guns by tightly compacting the area around himself and others. additionally, he can use this form to create a field of breathable, fresh air for those in need.
EARTH FORM: in this form, peter can control a vast majority of minerals that make up the solid foundation of many planets. this does include metallic materials, but only to a small degree as compared to the potential mountains peter could move otherwise.
known abilities: this form can control, manipulate, and produce things like iron, limestone, shale, granite, and so on. anything naturally occurring on earth or spartax, it can be lifted and manipulated by this form. the full capabilities of this form isn't quite known yet, as he hasn't needed to test it against massive formations yet.
WATER FORM: the first form peter actually ever experienced or used. the water form has a variety of uses and applications, ranging from powerful waves to providing drinking water. these can also create and manipulate both ice and steam.
known abilities: this form is capable of drawing water from the ground, ocean, and even out of blood in order for it to flow as he desires. the exact volume these can create are unknown, but it's assumed by j'son to be an incredibly high quantity. water can be both salty of fresh, depending on which peter calls for. although this water can be expelled at a devastating rate, it can also be used in a much more gentler fashion.
ORIGINAL FORM: as seen above. when in a state of rest (or without a specific intention), the element guns shoot high energy bullets. on their own, they're capable of getting through a majority of alien armor and body matter. this is what star-lord uses most often in common battles, as he tries to keep the full capabilities of his weapons under wraps and close to the chest.
CONCLUSION: in short, the guns have gone through quite a bit of development over the years, but their basis stays the same: two pistols with the ability to control and manipulate the most common elements. these are peter's most trusted weapons that he won't be seen without.
