HE THANKED the gods above that his younger brother atticus was great with lying and covering for him when he needed it. as much as arthur loved being the crown prince of england, there were just too many responsibilities that sometimes he just needed to take a breather. he liked to sneak out, often in disguise and just find a place to relax at, mainly a little-known cafe or a very small bookstore. not many people would think of looking for a prince in those places. there was one cafe he liked going to that doubled as a sort of bookstore as well — the owner was a sweet old lady who knew who he was but was kind enough to be discreet about it. it was nice and quiet, with very few customers and the place was hidden away so not many people pass by. another reason why he liked going there was because of the cute girl who worked there. she was… something else. arthur rarely spoke to her, but he always found himself looking at her even though he was trying to read. usually he was discreet with his staring, but today he was caught, causing his cheeks to heat up in embarrassment and he looked away, looking back down at the book he was reading.
Ava isn’t exactly a social butterfly, she hardly ever goes out of her way to start up conversations with people she doesn’t already know. Except this guy’s been coming to the cafe for what feels like forever and even though they mostly just smile at each other a few times, there’s something about him that puts her at ease. So she’s behind the counter pretending she’s busy with something even though there’s literally no-one else in the place when she feels his eyes on her. She meets his gaze, a hint of a smile on her face and takes a breath to steel her nerves as she makes her way over to him. “You’re a regular...but not like the other regulars. I know everything about pretty much everyone that comes in. How many cats they have, who their favourite authors are, whether or not they think Boris Johnson is a human disaster with terrible hair. Literally everything...and then there’s you. I don’t know your name, don’t know what you think about anything. All I know about you is your usual order...and that you have a really great smile that lights up your whole face. So...seeing as you’re literally the only customer in here, I think I’m going to chat with you for the rest of my shift...if you don’t mind. If you’d rather just read in silence, I can go back over there and pretend to be taking stock or something.”

he had always worn his heart on his sleeve, never afraid to admit his feelings and so here he was one too many drinks, feeling loose and holding the others hand in his own. playing with their fingers he had a smile on his lips, reaching over he grabbed a near by sharpie and pretended to just doddle some random pictures on their palm, concentrating rather hard as he did so — he wasn’t drawing patterns instead he had written the words ‘ marry me ’ he wasn’t sure if the other was ready for that but he was. blaise had never felt like this before and getting married, settling down that was what he wanted, he had the career already. light eyes flickered up to their features, gently chewing on his lower lip as he watched and waited for their reaction.

Amaka isn’t soft. She isn’t overly sentimental; she’s cryptic and layered and closed off and she keeps a tight rein on her emotions. She’s kept a carefully maintained between herself and the world in order to keep some sense of sanity in her line of work. Ever since she’d started seeing Blaise, a lot of that had sort of melted away. She’s comfortable with him in a way that she hasn’t been with anyone for a really long time. So they’re wrapped around each other, bodies intertwined, and she likes how at peace she feels when it’s just the two of them like this. She feels the words he’s writing onto her palm and lets out a startled chuckle before she readjusts herself to meet his eyes. “Don’t joke around like that.” Her voice is hushed when she looks at him, eyes boring into his to make sure that he isn’t just messing with her.

“Please, don’t,” Holly said quietly, her chin ducking down as a frown passed over her face. “I really don’t want to hear pity, you know?” She’d avoided the school for four days after catching one of her fellow cheerleaders with her boyfriend, and now she was just ready to put it behind her. To forget about the boy who’d broken her heart just because she wouldn’t sleep with him. She was angry more than anything else - from what she’d gathered, at least, most of the people in their friend group had known he was cheating on her with one of her closest friends, but no one had thought to tell her. “I just want to forget that it happened. And that’s hard, considering she’s on the squad, and we cheer at his games, but I just… Don’t want to even think about that until I have to, okay? Just… Don’t say anything.”
“He’s a piece of shit. That’s what I wanted to say. He’s a piece of shit and she’s a two-faced bitch. Oh, and he’s probably pissing pure fire right now because my ex slept with her too and she gave him gonorrhoea. There’s your silver lining.” If there’s anything Amaka knows beyond a shadow of a doubt, it’s that high school social politics are shitty...and high school boys are even worse. She’s been exactly where Holly is tight now; cheated on by a boy she’d let herself get too attached to and betrayed by a girl she’d thought was a friend...and it sucks. So more than anything else, she’s just trying to let her know that she’s not alone. “We can vote her off the team, can’t we? Exommunicate her for violating the spirit of cheer or something. Or we could randomly hold mid-year tryouts and find someone who’s better than her. Not like that would be hard, she can’t dance for shit and her tumbling is mediocre.”

Lighting his cigarette, Stan stood outside the police station. His day had been hectic as he was dealing with a huge case. He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to push away the headache that was forming. Blowing out the smoke, he looked out to the dark parking lot. He was focusing on clearing his mind when he heard someone call out his name. He shook his head slightly as he looked at the person, bearing some food.
Sometimes Stan forgot to eat, this person seemed to know. He smiled as he looked towards them. “You know. I can feed myself.” He said in a joking tone. “What are you doing here?” He asked as he leaned up against the wall, tilting his head down some to look at them in the eyes.
“You say that and yet every time I see you I swear you’re a little bit thinner than the last.” Ava’s only half-joking. She knows firsthand how he throws himself into his work. When they’d first opened up the investigation into her brother’s death, she’d spent way more time than was probably healthy down at the station waiting for information. She hadn’t really done anything at all that was useful but feeling like she was a part of things in some capacity had helped her through the earliest stages of the grieving process.
“I still can’t work out how to make pasta for one. So I come bearing a ton of carbonara and a bottle of white. It’s the good stuff; went round to my mum’s last night and stole this out of her wine fridge.” She raises the basket in her right hand slightly and closes the distance between them a little more with a smile on her face. “I figured my favourite cop could use a break and a good dinner...and I could use a little company.”

Edie had slotted herself into their family dynamic with ease. Olive is adorable, clever and sweet and cute to boot and Benjamin’s quite possibly the only man she’s met in the past year or so that she actually feels comfortable talking to for more than a few minutes. She doesn’t really understand how anyone in the world could leave them behind the way Olive’s mother has...she can’t imagine anything more appealing than the stable warmth of the home life Benjamin has crafted for them. “I spend most of my Friday nights curled up on the couch with a cup of tea working my way through my Netflix queue, honestly, so dinner with two of my favourite people on the planet sounds great.” She pauses then, an undercurrent of insecurity finding its way into her voice. As close as she’s gotten to them both, she sometimes forgets that she isn’t actually technically a part of their family dynamic. The last thing she wants to do is intrude on their time together, especially if he’s just inviting her to be polite. “...but don’t feel like you have to invite me. I know how much daddy-daughter time means to you and besides, I’ve still got a whole season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race to get through.” She sets Olive down so she can make her way upstairs and get in bed. “Just giving you a heads up, she’s probably going to want a lullaby tonight. Before you got home, she made me promise to sing ‘Moon River’ for her at bedtime.“

six rocks thrown at her window & still no answer. not even a peek out to spat some hatred towards him, & it makes his stomach churn poorly. there’s no doubt this is what he deserves : her anger, her refusal to speak to him. what he said was wrong, stupid even. BUT HE WANTS TO MAKE IT BETTER. wants to prove he can be better for her. he kneels down to reach for another pebble, until a familiar, singsong voice ( the one he’d follow anywhere. even in the depths of hell. ) prompts him to rise & turn instantly. he’s relieved to see her face, even if it’s not a joyful one. ❝ hey, look, JUST LET ME APOLOGIZE — give me five minutes, & if you decide you still hate me after, you can punch me. ❞
There’s a moment just after she spots him standing there that an all too familiar fluttering sensation starts in the pit of her belly. Still, she’s so upset with him that she contemplates just walking away without eveh acknowledging him and letting him deal with her father’s wrath when the noise eventually draws him out. “Hey, asshole. That’s my parents’ room. So maybe don’t wake my dad up when he just got off an 18 hour shift at the hospital.” She avoids making eye contact with him, staring at the ground beneath her feet instead but she can’t help the way her eyes roll when he starts speaking. “I don’t need you to apologise...I don’t need anything from you. You shouldn’t be here.” She wishes she could hate him; that she could switch off whatever it is inside her that won’t let that underlying current of tenderness just die. It would make everything so much easier. She doesn’t though. Not even close. What started out as burning anger has transformed itself into a deep-seated disappointment. On some level, she’d been waiting for whatever it was that had been going on between them to get fucked up since it had started. That really hadn’t made it hurt any less when it actually happened. “I’m not punching you. I’ve never thrown a proper punch in my life. I’d probably end up with busted knuckles and you’d barely even have a bruise to show for all my effort.” She still isn’t meeting his gaze - she’s looking literally everywhere but at him - but she hasn’t walked away. At least not yet.

He knew the entire car ride had been its own brand of torture to her, but he figured the end result would make it all worth it one way or another… unless of course she was the type to get sea sick, in which case he’d be kinda screwed. The fact that after all the time they’d known each other - or… fucked each other, more specifically - he still honestly had no idea whether or not she liked sailing, should probably tell him a thing or two about why Ava called their dynamic unstable. In many ways, the two were little more than strangers. Sure, Cole could tell you how she liked to be touched, which positions she enjoyed the most, which strategies to apply depending on whether he wanted to deny her climax or have her shaking with multiple intense orgasms. He knew every nook and cranny of her physical being - even knew the way her eyes would light up when she was excited about something, the way she smiled when she was upset and trying to hide it versus the way she smiled when was genuinely happy. Her emotions, her reactions, the way her mind worked - that he knew. And those were the things that made it possible for him to convince himself that he wasn’t entirely distant - that he had indeed gotten to know her. More importantly, those were the things he’d grown to like about her.
Still, when Ava turned to him with that unmistakably glimmer in her eyes, he felt relieved - relieved that he hadn’t fucked up worse by taking initiative this way. He didn’t usually feel uncertain about himself or his actions, but this? - trying to be more than just the surface version of himself? - this threw him off. Not that he showed as much, his signature charming and self-assured smile locked onto his features. “You know better than that,” he teased, pausing before he elaborated; “I’d much rather you wear nothing at my apartment.” He chuckled then, allowing her fingers to intertwine with his while his opposite hand rose to catch her chin gently. Tilting it upwards, he bent his own head to meet her lips with his. Leaving them a moment later, he nipped lightly at her lower lip on the way - his lips a mere inch from hers when he stilled and smiled. “Good. I’d hate for our first official date to be a bust.” He quipped, breezing past the fact that he’d never even alluded to this being a date before. Then he rose to his full height and used the hold she had on his hand to guide her gently towards the boat waiting for them.
“You’re the absolute worst.” The hint of a laugh in her voice takes all the sting out of the words. This is the energy she likes best, when they’re relaxed and at ease and bantering back and forth. There’s none of the tension that’s coloured most of their interactions for the past few months now. Ava can’t ignore the fluttering in the pit of her belly when his lips find hers. She tries to downplay the double take she does when he calls their little day trip a date but she doubts that she’s even moderately successful. She’s even less successful at hiding the colour rising to her cheeks and the smile that’s bringing out her dimples. She’s probably spent more time with him naked than she has clothed and yet all it takes is him admitting that he considers this a date to have her blushing like a schoolgirl with a crush. Cole covers pretty much all of his feelings much better than she does but she knows this is pretty far out of his comfort zone...and she also knows he’s pretty much only doing it for her sake. She’s trying not to get carried away with her feelings for him but it’s infinitely harder when he’s like this. “The last time I was on a boat was off the Croatian coast with my dad and my brothers; that was maybe...6 years ago? Something like that.” A smile makes its way onto her face at the warmth of the memory. There’s the familiar touch of sadness underneath it that comes up whenever she thinks of what things used to be like but she pushes that away quickly. That’s not what today is about. So she focuses on the way his hand feels in hers as he leads her onto the boat and lets herself get drawn back into the present. “Full disclosure: I’m a shitty co-captain - can’t navigate to save my life - but my sunbathing skills are stellar.”

based –––– trembling fingers ball into a fist that knocks at their front door hard and feverish so as to be heard over the roaring rain. he is positively soaked; designer garments stuck to his skin and socks swimming in his shoes. this isn’t a common occurrence –– he hasn’t been to a bar for about a year up until tonight. whenever he steps foot into one he won’t be stumbling out anything short of helplessly inebriated and stupid. as an added bonus, and more than likely the reason he had stepped out tonight: he’s struggling to heal of a break up that took place over three months ago. broken heart makes him prone to doing even dumber things than get drunk on a weekday, like walk from the pub all the way to their place in the pouring rain and thunder. he knocks again, even harder, praying that the tears streaking his cheeks can pass off as the raindrops rolling down the rest of his face.
Edie’s fallen into a routine of sorts. Weeknights are spent curled up on her couch with a good bottle of wine - preferably riesling - and dinner off whichever takeaway menu she can get her hands on first. It’s curry tonight, a mediocre chicken korma and buttered naan, while she flicks through the options on netflix. The monotony of her days gives her a strange sort of peace. Immediately post-Sebastian, she’d felt like her world had fallen off its axis. Now she’s draped herself in banality so she can distract herself from just how poorly she’s coping on an emotional level. This is her attempt to readjust; reaching for some sense of what she imagines normality is for other people. When she hears the first knock, she’s half-convinced she imagined it. The second one pulls her towards the door, surprise making her forget to check the peephole. Then, there he is. And the first thing she thinks is she wishes she was wearing something other than this oversized sweater and her cozy socks...and maybe she should’ve put some trousers on before coming to the door. That’s the only conscious thought she has for a few moments because the hollow ache in her chest that had finally began to fade these past few weeks is back with a vengeance. She chews on her bottom lip - a nervous tick she still hasn’t managed to kick - and tugs at the bottom of her sweater as she takes him in. Underneath the sense of panic that’s beginning to rise in her is concern. He looks miserable, he’s drenched and if the faint whiff of liquor she’s getting is real, he’s three sheets to the wind on top of all that. “Sorry, where are my manners”, ha, the unintentional irony, “Come inside. Spend any more time in those clothes and you’ll catch your death of cold.” She pauses, blushes, chews on her lip a little more. “Not that I’m trying to get you out of your clothes...in like, a sexual way...I just meant...you need to change or you’ll be sick tomorrow. I can make tea. And turn the heating up or something. Yeah.” She opens the door a bit wider to let him through and forces a tight smile to her face to stop herself from rambling on.

it was rare jasper ever got annoyed with other people. usually, it was other people who were annoyed with his outrageous antics and childish jokes. but, for some reason, he had managed to surround himself with people who really got under his skin. his friends somehow found a way to claw their nails in to his thick skin to drive him wild. jasper didn’t even know why he still hung out with the particular group of men. the only reason he stayed with the familiar pack was because they had clung together in high school. hell, he had thought about ditching them for months, but hadn’t grown the balls to actually go through with it. jasper never imagined he would outgrow someone considering how laid back he was. leaning back in to the plush leather seat, his eyes roamed the room, not finding a fiber in his being to care about the game on the television. the man’s eyes continued to land on the woman who was scurrying around the house putting the perfect evening together. quiet ‘thank yous’ were mumbled under his breath while she set plates of food in front of him. she was too good for his friend; god, she was TOO GOOD for ANYONE in that room.
all night jasper had bit his tongue. he didn’t say anything every time his friend slapped the girl on her ass, or even when he demanded another beer from her like she was a slave; yet, when he had thrown a fit over the food wasn’t done, he had had enough. his heart sunk when he watched the girl scurry off towards the second floor like a scared dog. rolling his eyes, he stood up from the couch and slapped the other man on the back of the head. “nice going, idiot.” hurrying to the second floor, jasper wandered around, looking for the woman. “hey,” he called out and lingered outside her bedroom door. “it’s jasper— can i come in? i just wanna talk.”
Edie’s gotten used to this routine. Liam’s friends are packed into their living room, sprawled out across the couches with video game controllers in their hands making a mess that she’s going to have to clean up when they’ve all finally made their way home. They don’t acknowledge her, don’t say hi, don’t do much else except chuckle whenever he gets a little handsy or shift so she can put some more food on the tables in front of them. Jasper’s hushed thank yous are the only sign that anyone seated there, her own boyfriend included, even thinks of her as a human being. She offers him the tiniest smile in response every time, small enough that no-one else will notice and comment but warm enough that hopefully he can actually see it.
Ordinarily she’s good at ignoring him when he gets this way. She just maintains her calm, does everything he expects her to do and settles down in a corner of the room, hoping he’s too distracted by everything else to pay her any attention. Today she’s already had a completely shitty day at work and she’s absolutely starving because she hasn’t actually had anything to eat all day so his outburst is a little too much for her to handle. She’s sequestered herself away in her room with a glass of white wine, blinking back the tears of embarrassment that had been threatening to fall when Jasper’s voice interrupts the silence. She sets the wine glass on her bedside table and makes her way back to the bedroom door, taking a few more calming breaths before she pops her head round it with a plastered-on smile. “I’m fine. Really. You don’t have to come up and check on me every time he does this. Besides, I’m pretty sure you’ve got aliens to kill or goals to score or soldiers to shoot or whatever the hell’s happening on that tv screen downstairs.”

CLOSED STARTER. “You said you wanted time with me that wasn’t about sex, right?” Cole said quietly, lips by her ear while his hands rested on her hips. He stood positioned behind her, breathing controlled as he waited for the right moment to remove the blindfolds that had covered her eyes since he’d picked her up at her apartment twenty minutes ago. “Well… I can’t promise to keep my hands off you, but I can promise this isn’t only about the sex.” His tone grew playful at that, a smile on his lips while he reached up to the knot at the back of her head and undid the blindfold. When it fell away, and her eyes adjusted to the light of the sun once more, she’d see a motor boat docked before her. It appeared new and pristine but nothing overly flashy, which would probably come as a shock considering its owner, but it had plenty of room for lounging, including a sun bed large enough for two at the back of it. The tips of his fingers grazed her upper arms gently. “What do you say, babe?” @onyxedideas
She hates how she can’t seem to quiet the anticipatory fluttering in her stomach. Ever since he’d slipped the blindfold over her eyes, she’d been teetering on the edge of near-giddiness. She lets herself relax into him slightly when his hands find their way to her hips, nibbling on her bottom lip slightly as he speaks. The lightness of his breath on the shell of her ear is just a little ticklish and between that and her general mood she just barely manages to suppress a giggle. She rubbed her eyes for a moment “When you told me to get my bikini on underneath my clothes, I just thought you wanted me to walk around your apartment in it so you could perv on me all day.” She twists in his grasp slightly and presses a quick kiss to the curve of his jaw. “This is infinitely better than that.” She turns around completely then, so she can meet his eyes and their omnipresent twinkle is only emphasised by the way the light filters on them now. She twines her fingers through his to stop herself from getting too distracted. “I say aye aye, captain.”

I saw this before I left work last night and had a quiet hope, and today I checked my phone at about quarter to two, while I was still on my lunch break, and I’ve just got a job interview with the BBC next week
I’m not a big believer in anything much but I’m so happy holy shit. So like unrelated note but something real good happened to me at 1.42 today lol
So...after 2 and a 1/2 weeks, tumblr has finally fixed its shit and let me back into my damn account. Ffs. Anyway. I’m back. If we had a thread before I got kicked out of my account and you’d like us to keep it up, please like this post. If you’d rather plot something new instead, we can figure that out via messages too.
