RYAN GOSLING "I wouldn't dare Ken-splain the Barbie movie."
The bookselling behemoth is making life harder for writers, but so is the public perception that art doesn’t need to be paid for
“People have always felt a sort of ownership over art, and that’s actually good. It’s why you keep a book on your shelf and return to it, it’s why you hang a picture on your wall that speaks to you. But when this gets out of hand and you mistake access or a personal connection with your rights, as happens so often in our Internet age, it leads to a dangerous sense of entitlement. That’s why readers feel empowered to complain, directly to the creator, that a book or show doesn’t have absolutely everything they want: the romantic pairing they’d hoped for, the language they find most friendly, the ending they desired. And it’s also why, for instance, the last Harry Potter book leaked on the internet before it was officially published: fans saw the book as something they were owed, not the product of labor that deserved compensation. Not that J.K. Rowling needs more money—but she, and all authors, deserve to have their work recognized as work.
“Consumers hold a pernicious power, so this trend towards free content won’t reverse itself unless we want it to. This is a sad thing, and we will all be much worse off if we can only hear stories from people who can afford to write.”
Please please please do NOT pirate books if you want to keep having books to read. The median income for full-time authors in 2017 is reported at $20,857. That means half of all authors reporting income made LESS.
And of the authors that reported that they were, in fact, full-time authors, only 63% had ANY earnings to report. The average of those who did earn something was $43,247. Which means, looking at the difference between the median and average, the average is heavily weighted by the superstars.
MOST of your favorite authors are either working a second (or third, or more) job, have a partner who earns more money, or is living hand-to-mouth, or some combination of the three.
Libraries are your friends. Most have ebook collections now. I know readers gotta eat, but writers do too.
Signed, Someone whose book isn’t out for another 4 months, and is ALREADY being pirated :(
Oh gosh :( this really hit me: “This is a sad thing, and we will all be much worse off if we can only hear stories from people who can afford to write.”
A post from Maggie Stiefvater’s deactivated Tumblr about pirating killing the Raven Cycle boxset
Another post about how piracy meant that her publisher cut the print run on the last book because the previous book wasn’t selling as well and how she teamed up with her brother to prove that online piracy was responsible for the lower sales
If you cannot afford to buy books, please go through your public library! When you get a library card, you’ll also be able to sign up to rent audiobooks; a librarian can help you if you’re not sure how. Libraries are an important part of the book ecosystem, and when you get a book for free from the library, you’re still supporting the author.
It’d be a missed opportunity if I ignored the date

Not disappointed by this one
Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like “he was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handouts” and I wanted to be like… okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years

do you think if robots came out in 2015 instead of 2005 that this guy would have been one of the inescapable tumblr sexymen like the onceler or humanized bill cipher
listen the message of robots (2005) is that if we all work together we can destroy our capitalist oppressors through direct action not that if we all work together we can sexualize a robot
monster’s cruelty
dialogue from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
y’all I CANNOT
Okay so yes we need to put more money into education in the US but y'all this SPECIFIC line of thinking has much less to do with public education and everything to do with the evangelical war on science. This exact “earth age” rhetoric isn’t the result of dumb people, its being taught in Christian schools and touted in evangelical churches. Evangelical lobbies help pass laws that force states to teach creationism alongside evolution. Millions are spent every year by evangelical institutions to convince partitions that science is lying to them, to force them to belive the only place they can find truth is the church. Creationism is just another facet of that and acting like it just “Americans are dumb” rather than a pointed, purposeful campaign to keep people in a what amounts to a cult, is not oy disingenuous, its dangerous
Thank you, Uni.
Yeah as someone who was taught the earth was 6000 years old and believed it until I was like, 22: its a cultish weird thing you get shoved into your hea from a VERY young age. We had sunday school classes about how evolution was wrong when I was growing up; and about how feminism and even egaltarianism was wrong as well. Brainwashing doesn’t skip over you based on whether or not you are “smart”.

Do any other neurodivergent ppl, especially adhd ppl, walk around and basically chant things to remember them? This morning I was walking around my house saying "what am I doing? What am I doing what am I doing? Im making coffee I'm making coffee I'm making coffee I'm making coffee! I'm making coffee." and continued to chant so I didn't get distracted AAND SHIT I JUST GOT DISTRACTED BY MAKING THIS POST FUCK GODDAMN IT
YES!!!!
If I have to do a task and I CANNOT become distracted, I chant it to myself until I can do it!
The moment I stop chanting is the moment ADHD is waiting for. It will pounce, tearing away the task I'm trying to remember and leaving me with like... Oh maybe I should alphabetise the spices or some shit.
the overwhelming grief of losing an entire year to sickness, violence and pandemic fatigue is settling in so id like to remind everyone that: you are not a failure, yes there is still a happy future for you, and wearing a mask is very sexy

shout out to all the people who identify with gifted kid burnout syndrome who are probably just neurodivergent but werent diagnosed as a child, who used to devour books like it was nothing and never really understood why the protagonist would leave their cool fantasy world behind to go back home at the end of the story, and who are now extremely disappointed in reality and use escapism as their primary coping mechanism. how’s that bisexuality and deep-rooted anger at the school system going for you?
