In case you were wondering, yes, I am absolutely devastated over Sam Neill's death. I haven't cried this hard since Bowie. Been rewatching his Merlin series, will probably be watching JP 1, 3, and Dominion. And Daybreakers. And The Horse Whisperer. And A Cry in the Night.

My man was so prolific. Merlin will always be my favorite, just for the immeasurable impact it had on me.

He had the best Merlin costume too. The feather cloak, the wolfskin cloak. There is no other Merlin for me. No one else even compares.

And this was meant to be a BAD thing. A problem. But if you actually believed that a massive population of low-literacy adults were buying books, becoming obsessed with them, and discussing them at length… wouldn’t that be a great thing? That’s how one moves from low literacy to high literacy: by practicing reading

Unless you think low literacy is an immutable quality reflective of poor character, in which case YOU are actually the problem

Today is Octavia Butler's Birthday...

And I want to once again say, WE NEED PROPER ADAPTATIONS of #DAWN and #WILDSEED especially, right now.

Because the fears that are being exploited by MAGA are explicitly delved into in both works.

This is me trying to SELL these books (you can also get them on Hoopla and Libby, if you have a library card!) So, DAWN is about people post finally eradicating most of the planet and ourselves hundreds of years after nuclear fallout. Aliens have some of us. And I mean UGLY REPULSIVE ALIEN aliens... like I would imagine is out there, TBH. They don't have faces, just mounds of fine hair-like emotive tentacles. The thing is... They are driven by a compulsion to integrate with other species. BUT (and this is a big but), once they do...That species no longer can exist as they were. (((YOU WILL NOT REPLACE US!))) 🙃 They literally make it so human beings cannot reproduce without their genetic material also being a part of the equation. Its also very queer and poly as the aliens are THREE genders (another fear being pedaled right now). The plot begins as they have attempted to awaken several human beings but all have gone mad or been so violent towards this extreme other, they didn't survive. The finally awaken a Black woman, from whom without her consent, they have taken her cancerous tumor and integrated it into their genetics to help heal them from wounds more efficiently (giving Henrietta Lacks teas). This Black woman takes a long time, but does manage to contain her horror and get used to their appearance and basically becomes their Judas goat to assimilate the rest of the human beings to how it's gonna be, if they want to go back to earth. The rest is the fallout from that. WILD SEED is a centuries long epic allegory for what the transcontinental slave trade did to us.

The plot is about an immortal narcissist with the power to take over ANYONE (they kinda stole the premise for the cult horror thriller with Denzel Washington, called FALLEN) who uses enslavement to experiment and tinker with humanity (those who have gifts) even breeding them together to create his "master race." The only other immortal, a shapeshifter (both predate race and so were originally African melanated humans) does her best to keep him reined in, so to speak... He uses enslavement to hide a breeding stock program, where he treats people like expendable bodies...and it's EVERYONE he can get his hands on with ~potential~. So, basically she makes how racism fucks us up accessible in those two books, via sci-fi. HIGHLY recommend. I WISH capable producers would give her work the same treatment Handmaid got. But that's just it... I don't think anyone can handle it with the intelligence and grasp of the themes needed to really do those works justice (see how badly they fucked up KINDRED nobody has the balls to really go there nowadays). Which is a shame and why you should read them instead, if you haven't.

The brilliant aspect, is the inclusion done right. Most of the time, when white writers do oppression allegories, they just use white people and don't include the nastier and harder to deal with aspects that have happened in history. She does with a full gaze, very clear direct prose, and keeps it both Black and inclusive. Butler writes without handwringing or softening, which is why my neurodivergent behind especially appreciates her. You don't ever have to try to interpret what she means.
