No that is reserved for Katherine, she is banned from cooking in all 50 states and most parts of Europe too.

❝ I thought baking would be simple, I'll just stick to the decorations for now. ❞ For the first time in what felt like forever, Elena’s happiness wasn’t a fake smile that she was using to hide her sadness.

It was pretty obvious that Elena had to miss a step or two, she was trying to rely on hope and motivation. There was some type of warmth that seemed to resurface when stefan is around, being next to him made it easier for her be herself.

❝ Stefan! You dont have to lie just to make me feel better. All you have to do is say it, I know its horrible. And for the record, I did use a recipe; I just had a very different vision of what a cupcake should look like. ❞

Elena leaned back against the kitchen counter, pouting before crossing her arms over her apron. It was moments like this—standing in her kitchen, baking with a friend that made her believe her life might actually go back to normal.

When it came to Elijah, Elena respected him a lot, she admired his compassionate nature because he'll do anything for his family. He was different from other vampires she had met, she liked how Elijah tried his best to hold onto his humanity.

❝ Elijah i could never resent you, we all know that Klaus wants to kill me because of his stupid ritual. Once I found out who Esther was, I asked her for help to take down Klaus. Here's the thing Elijah, she needs my blood to it.❞

Elena starts to worry about what will happen when night time approaches. She hates being in the brink of darkness; what if someone finds her here? What will happen if Elijah decides to leave but doesnt return in time? Those questions are a constant thought in her mind, Elena would do anything if that meant she would be able to go home.

❝ I swear I didnt know Esther had a plan to kill of all of you, your siblings might be innocent but I can't control what she does. if she wants you dead it is best for me to stay out of her way, Nothing I say or do will change her mind. ❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀for a fleeting moment, genuine confusion crossed katherine's features. a bird? of all the explanations she had expected, that had certainly not been among them. this certainly would not be the first thing katherine would mention upon meeting the woman who happens to share her face.

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine's gaze lingered on the younger woman, studying every minute difference (apart from the most obvious one: the hair) that separated them despite the impossible similarities. from a distance, the resemblance had been uncanny enough. standing this close, however... it was almost grotesque. like looking into a mirror that reflected an entirely different life.

⠀⠀⠀⠀slowly, she circled half a step, not invading elena's space, but moving with the effortless confidence of someone who had never once questioned who occupied the top of the food chain.

⠀⠀⠀⠀at the question, however, katherine tilted her head thoughtfully "as far as i know, it is simply... a peculiarity of nature. an exceedingly rare one."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"you may assume we're connected, though 'related' is perhaps too simplistic a word. shared ancestry would be more accurate." she wouldn't call herself related to elena; simply because there were more than five centuries between them. if they didn't look almost idendical, they hardly would have had the same dna. || @elenasecrets

She shook her head slightly, trying to find the right words to articulate her thoughts. It was weird, her own existence was somehow connected to the vampire standing right in front of her. Katherine's distinction about shared ancestry rather than being 'related' made a lot of sense to Elena.

❝You know this explains a lot, this world kept pulling me in, maybe thats why I was never going to be able to just blend in. I would like to know more, could you tell me about how it all started, who was the first one? ❞

Elena crossed her arms loosely over her chest, For a second, she stared down at her hands. ❝I used to think I knew my family's history, the Gilbert journals, the founders' council, the inventions. But talking about shared ancestry spanning over five hundred years? It's overwhelming.❞

Elena takes a glance at the burnt, lopsided cupcakes before meeting Stefan’s eyes—it was safe to say baking was not her calling. Months ago, she had signed up for the Late Summer Bake Festival. Elena was desperate for her life to go back to normal again; getting back to everyday human activities was all she really wanted. The festival was the best excuse for her to build a more active social life. By entering she was hoping to interact with her fellow peers, maybe meet new people and have fun.

❝Stefan, I'm going to need your help with this.❞

Oh she's making an attempt. While Katherine is surprised, she's also relatively impressed with the initiative here. Elena had said she wanted to do better with how she treats Katherine... and it would appear she's actually putting in the effort to do so. However.

Katherine let out a sigh, trying to regulate before she spoke so she didn't bite Elena's head off for not understanding the root of the issue.

"Cute, really." That sounds condescending Katherine. "I mean, I appreciate it. I do. Elena, do you understand that it's not that I can't get myself a house. I am a master at finding a place to stay by now. It's not the structure that's the issue..."

She chewed on her lip just a little bit, trying to decide just how vulnerable she wants to be in this moment.

"Klaus is the issue. I can't stay in one spot not because I don't have a house but because I can't risk him knowing where I am. I would rather DIE than get caught by Klaus. He has ruined every distant relative of stability I have ever had in my life. He has hunted me for five hundred years and that is why I can't stay in one place. I appreciate your offer Elena, but you can't free me from Klaus. And the last thing I need is to be blamed by someone for him burning down a family house just because I was in it." If it wasn't Elena it would be one of the other gang and they both knew that realistically.

❝You need stability? I get that katherine. And you're right theres no way I could free you from Klaus, I'm not a vampire. Even if i was i'm sure it would end badly; I wouldn't want you to go experience another moment like that again. Katherine, I know you didn't have choice; but I still can't believe how you got away from a monster like him.❞

Even though they had moved forward, every word that she said Katherine keeps appearing in her mind. A part of her believes she’s no different from the people who pushed katherine away from day one.

If there was one thing Elena and Katherine could actually agree on, it was their mutual feelings about Klaus. Elena appreciated Katherine's honesty about her past, knowing life had never been easy for her. She used to think her own life was difficult, but compared to Katherine's, their worlds were completely different. Elena knows that she was given opportunities that katherine wasn't able to recieve, by every definition she was privileged.

❝ I didn't want to admit it but god, I was such a bitch to you. I'm sorry, Katherine.—By the way, there's a new bakery just down the street from the Mystic Grill—want to check it out?❞

the  question  isn't  exactly  original.  many  had  commentary  or  questions  about  her  luxurious  style  that  seemed  to  often  contain  pinks.  ❛❛  oh  please.  barbies  wishes  she  had  outfits  like  mine.  she  strikes  me  as  the  type  to  shop  at  tj  maxx.  ❜❜  though,  she  supposes  barbie  did  have  fairly  nice  taste  —  depending  on  the  era  and  particular  line.  so  she  accepts  the  compliment  just  the  same.

jackie  then  slips  her  arm  into  elenas.  eying  her  newest  victim  with  ease  as  a  sinister  smile  slips  upon  her  features.  ❛❛  what  do  you  say  you  an'  i  go  shopping  ?  i  will  make  sure  to  have  you  in  things  to  make  all  these  founders  women  an'  caroline  weep  with  envy.  that  an'  your  beau  will  be  unable  to  keep  his  hands  off  of  you.  you're  a  dark  winter,  right  ?  i  can  work  with  that,  don't  worrk.❜❜

Elena tilted her head slightly, considering the offer as they began to stroll down the sidewalk. Her mind drifted to Damon—or Stefan briefly, Elena had no idea who she was actually trying to impress—or if she even wanted to. She liked the idea of having someone to help her out, especially when it came to fashion. She thought it was sweet when jackie asked to take her shopping.

Alright, lead the way—

But if we end up spending three hours analyzing color palettes, you're buying the iced coffees afterward. And I'm holding you to that promise about making the Founder's Council weep. I was thinking of changing my style, the problem is I dont even know where to start. I want to look good, but not like I am trying too hard. Do you have any ideas?

Buffy couldn't blame Elena for not wanting to deal with Stefan right now. There was a possibility that Buffy was a little bias towards Stefan because not only did he bear a strong resemblance to Angel, but he didn't feed on humans and it sounded like he was dealing with similar burdens. You have no idea what it's like to have done the things I've done and to care, he'd said to her. Buffy was speculating of course. But part of it was also what she'd already told Elena; Stefan wasn't the same kind of vampire she usually face. She knew nothing about his kind and those were questions only he could answer. "You don't have to talk to him right now," she said. "I'm just saying in general that if you don't know who to trust anymore, you're going to start thinking everyone is a vampire. and you don't need that."

"The thing is I AM ready to tell you. I WANT to tell you. It's a huge part of who I am and I don't wanna hide it from you now that you're on the supernatural side of the street. The only reason I'm a little iffy about telling you is because it's another bomb, but if you think you can handle it, I'll spill." When Elena was little, Buffy used to tell her about everything, but they were disguised as bedtime stories. So, not only was Elena going to know that the stories were true, but also that Buffy died. Given that she's just lost her parents, Buffy had a feeling that was the first thing Elena was going to focus on.

Elena wishes Buffy would open up and tell her everything—even if she knew it wouldn't happen overnight. After years apart, Elena is eager to build a stronger bond with Buffy. Buffy was one of the few adults she truly looked up to, Elena felt that in their situation, it was the silence between them that is keeping them apart.

I think I can handle it, buffy, I'm not a little girl anymore. Dealing with the death of my parents was not easy, but I'm trying my best to move forward and not live in the past. You don't have to hesistate when it comes to me, we're family buffy.

Elena blinked twice at the sight in front of her, this was no hallucination, and it certainly wasn't a mirror. She wore the same exact face as Elena, she was the mysterious woman in stefan's picture. It was her, katherine.

When elena tried let the words out, it was like her heart stopped for a second, the air felt heavy, her lungs felt tight. She was nervous, scared.

H-h-hello, you must katherine, I'd like to talk to you for a moment. Is that okay?

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine regarded her doppelgänger in silence for a long moment. it was, admittedly, a little surreal finally standing face to face with the girl whose life she had observed from the shadows more than once. she had not planned to meet her yet but well, seems like plans have to change.

⠀⠀⠀⠀one brow rose as the other woman's voice caught over itself. "well, i certainly hope you're not always this nervous." her head tilted ever so slightly, studying the familiar face that was, paradoxically, entirely its own person.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"yes." she answered without hesitation. "i'm katherine. which means you must be elena." there was no surprise in the observation. if anything, it sounded like the confirmation of something she had known long before this meeting. again, she had been informed.

⠀⠀⠀⠀her gaze lingered for another second before folding her arms loosely across her chest. "now..." the amusement in her expression became just a touch more pronounced. "what exactly is it that you want from me? because i have to admit..." she let the sentence hang deliberately for a heartbeat. "i wasn't expecting my first conversation with my doppelgänger to begin with stammering."

"No, I'm usually not like this, ummm...there was bird, it was following me. It made me a little jittery, it was like someone was spying on me or something: I don't even know what it was exactly."

— Are you a vampire, like stefan?

"I dont want anything from you personally, I would like to know why do we look alike? it's scary, weird and really strange—I dont understand this at all. Its not like we are related so could this even be possible?"

it was this unsettling feeling that rose in her stomach. It wasn't from discomfort, it was disbelief, never in a million years did she think she would be standing in front of a woman who looked like her. if katherine did tell her everything that she knows, Elena is unsure about wether she could handle the truth or not, but If she doesn't take chances now, Elena would regret it in the future

Katherine smirked as Elena mentioned being startled. The older doppelganger set the little stuffed horse aside and leaned back against the head board again.

"If I told you then it would hardly be sneaking." She mused, clearly in a playful mood today. She's not here to pick fights- for the moment.

The rest of Elena's explanation actually hit Katherine in a way she hadn't expected to get hit. The jealousy rose in her chest, and she could taste it in her mouth like a bile that wanted so badly to mutate into venom to be spat at the girl in front of her.

How nice it must be to have parents that protected you. How nice it must be to have fond memories that don't leave scars. Love, Stability, Kindness- how sweet all those must taste for Elena when all Katherine can do is imagine what it might be like.

Life's a lot easier when we aren't fighting.

And yet- it feels so much more dangerous when they aren't. Hate is something Katherine can understand, anger is something she's well versed in. These are staples in her emotional diet, they're always there. Friendship, admiration, comradery- these are shiny new things that Katherine hasn't had a lot of experience with. They're also things that can be lost quickly. Things that can change a lot faster than hate and anger can. Friendship can be poisoned. Hate is already a poison she sips daily.

"Yea? Well it's a lot easier not to fight when you aren't judging me for shit I couldn't control." She's lashing out- but it some how feels more hollow than her usual rage filled bites. The anger isn't as intense. Suddenly the vampire that's known for her wild fire seems a lot more like embers after a fire too tired to keep destroying.

"I couldn't keep them anyway." She glances over at the pile. "You know, that whole- nowhere to live thing. What would I do with them?"

Elena wanted to do something meaningful—It wasn't out of pity; she knew Katherine had spent half a century alone. Even if they never became best friends, Elena just wanted Katherine to experience something different for once: actual happiness. Katherine was right, Elena did have a habit of judging her for things that weren't in her power, Elena wanted to change that. Hearing that katherine didnt have a place to stay, made her think of something. What if she gave katherine a temporary place to call home?.

❝There's an empty room right across from mine; I could help you decorate it if you want. But if you prefer total peace and quiet, you can have my parents' lakehouse all to yourself. I'd just have to move a few things around. —The choice is yours, to make up for it you could buy me doughnuts❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀elijah paused at the mouth of the cavern, his expression remaining composed despite the plea that echoed behind him. for a brief moment, he closed his eyes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i had hoped," he said quietly, "that today would unfold very differently." his gaze lowered toward the ancient stone beneath his feet before returning to the darkness of the chamber.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"unfortunately, i had to discover that i have misplaced my trust." there was no anger in his voice, only disappointment. he had believed that they were civil with each other. but instead, there were lies and deception.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i asked you a simple question after the ball and you assured me my mother desired nothing more than to reunite our family." his jaw tightened. "yet your heartbeat told an entirely different story."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"had you simply believed my mother intended to kill klaus, i might have understood your decision. but she intends to destroy us all." he wouldn't have allowed it, though.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"my own mother seeks to erase every one of her children in the name of correcting what she believes to be her greatest mistake."

⠀⠀⠀⠀he rested one hand against the rough stone beside the entrance. "i take no satisfaction in leaving you here. however, as matters presently stand, you are the only leverage capable of persuading the salvatore brothers to assist me before my mother succeeds where countless enemies have failed."

She  couldn't  bring  herself  to  maintain  eye  contact  with  the  Original,  she  was  full  of  shame  and  regret.  Her  eyes  wandered  around  as  she  pressed  her  back  against  the  rough,  cold  stone  wall  behind  her.  Elena  had  the  chance  to  be  truthful  with  him,  but  she  made  a  reckless  choice  by  acting  out  on  impulse  instead  of  thinking  straight.

I  lied  to  you  when  I  shouldn't  have,  and  I  know  how  terrible  that  is.  I  messed  up  badly,  Elijah.  I  thought  I  was  doing  the  right  thing,  but  I  was  completely  wrong.  I  broke  your  trust,  in  the  worst  way  as  possible

The  thought  of  being  left  behind  in  the  dark  made  her  stomach  turn.  She  was  desperate,  she  would  do  anything  if  that  meant  she  could  get  out  of  this  place.  Elena  did  not  like  the  idea  of  being  all  alone  in  cold  with  no  one  else  insight  but  herself,  it  made  her  uneasy.

But you have to let me out of here, please Elijah

"So what's with all the stuffed animals..... like I get one or two.... but like twenty?" Is there a tinge of jealousy? Maybe. Remember Katherine doesn't get to stay in one place for long, and hasn't ever had the opportunity to amass a collection of anything... except enemies.

And clearly she's been snooping and hasn't even hidden it the way she's currently sitting on Elena's bed... with her feet up. Boots on.

Elena didn't feel the flash of anger that she would usually get when she is around vampires. If anything, she respected Katherines's curiosity, even if she deeply wished the vampire would have given her some sort of warning before slipping into her bedroom.

There was no shouting, no immediate defense; instead, Elena simply let out a breathless laugh, trying to steady her racing pulse. Leaning against the doorframe, she looked at the collection of toys piled near her headboard. Elena felt the need to explain the clutter, not out of shame but from her perspective.

❝ Katherine, if you are going to sneak up in here like that, you should warn me. You scared me for a second—I kind of have a habit of collecting things.❞

❝ Maybe, its hoarding or overconsumption but it helps me sleep. Stuffed animals remind me of my parents, whenever I had nightmares—they would buy stuffed animals for me so I wouldn't be scared at night. That's why I collect them. ❞

Besides the memories of her parents reading to her every single night and encouraging her growing passion to become a writer, this gesture was thoughtful and very sweet. Elena loved how her parents listened to her thoughts and ideas whenever she talked, she regrers not being able to tell her parents how much she appreciates them before they died.

❝ You can have a few if you want, Katherine. Life is so much easier when we aren't fighting. You are a lot different than I thought you would be—and please don't take that as an insult. Its a compliment, and I really mean it. ❞
