UPDATE I'VE DONE TESTING AND I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT :D
So what I'm pretty sure grian has is *something* (eg pumpkin) that has the texture of BOTH a non enchanted netherite helmet and his cool eyes.
He has then enchanted that eg pumpkin and so swapping between a regular enchanted netherite helmet and his helmet+eyes gives the effect without anything noticeable being put on his head
also I went into Minecraft and checked, yep enchantment glint carries over no matter what headgear you switch to (linked here cause tumblr doesn't like videos in reblogs)
in his next vid hes gonna do it without the helmet and screw this all over
this is an interesting theory bc i too am super curious about how he did it 🤔🤔🤔 i don't think it's quite this bc the effect is actually something grian can do with a toggle (he showed it on stream a couple of days ago) and also bc the pixels here are Minuscule. it's completely outside the minecraft grid. so i feel it can't be a normal texture, right??? im so intrigued. minuscule animated texture........ what are your secrets grian
Guys what if ... He is using the mod which makes bdubs eyes blink. Cause idk when but bdubs did ask maybe that grian could make his eyes blink. What if instead of blinking eyes grian went with WATCHER way 😎.
Imagine with me a Double Life au where Gem joins the game early (and they call Lizzie to complete the pairs) and the soulmate couples end up being:
Tango and Grian.
Scar and Pearl.
Gem and Etho.
Joel and Scott.
Cleo and Lizzie.
Bdubs and Ren.
BigB and Martyn.
Impulse and Jimmy.
Before I start, just want to say: good choice of pairs, 10/10 no notes. Anyways, it took me some brainstorming, then streamlining, and finally dramatizing, but here is what I managed to come up with:
(WARNING - LONG)
In this version, Tango wouldn't find his soulmate upon dying, but rather much earlier in a group when getting goat horns. Thus Tango doesn't go caving alone in this timeline, and I imagine Grian would manage to keep him safe enough for the first session.
Does Joel still die to the enderman? Possibly not, but I love the idea of Scott being the first yellow, so screw it. Pearl and Scar are another pair to find each other earlier, and they base near the pandas together. Scarlet Pearl doesn't happen.
Though Grian is still bummed about not being with BigB, he doesn't have as much issues with his soulmate in this timeline, so he make a non-secret alliance with him (+Martyn) instead. Although, Martyn would probably go behind the alliance's back to have something going on with Ren again.
Grian and Tango were the first two people in the Life Series to intentionally cause deaths, both while on their green names. So in a world without Scarlet Pearl to cause chaos around the server, I can totally see them coming with ways to "invite people to die", as Tango described Dare To Flare as. Whatever that would entail, I can't imagine, as both of them are a million times more creative than I could ever be.
But regardless, they create fun times (or not-so-fun depending who you are) all around, cause several deaths, and become public enemies number one. Scar and Grian weren't the main target during the siege in canon, so I doubt Red Velvet Duo (their name in this timeline I decided) would be able to keep themselves as the last greens here.
I'm instead attributing that to... Uhh let's say Martyn and BigB. They get hunted down and Jimmy and Impulse die soon after (Canary Curse). Red Velvet Duo ends up joining a temporary alliance with all the remaining yellows to survive as long as possible, but Martyn still has secret dealings going on with a red Ren, and sells the two out to him in an act of betrayal.
They are. Both. Furious. Imagine Tango's rage but instead of a calming force, he gets a Grian adding even more fuel to the fire. And what do they do about it?
They get a Warden to the surface, of course! Except this time, it's only in the late game. Whether it gets any kills or not doesn't matter much, because either way the yellow hunt continues and soon the server is all reds.
For an overview of current standings: BigB-Martyn and Joel-Scott are Tango-Grian's biggest enemies, who are also allied with Bdubs-Ren and Cleo-Lizzie, and Martyn has been sorta friends with Pearl-Scar since the first session (nether raid). This leaves only Gem-Etho, whom the Red Velvet Duo get onto their side, and they probably manage to convince the Panda Keepers (Pearl and Scar) to join as well.
Though they still have the disadvantage in numbers, I think it's not too crazy to consider Bdubs-Ren and Cleo-Lizzie being the next few pairs out, and just like that the tides are quickly turned.
And then, Grian kills Martyn, which although is his biggest enemy, he immediately feels the regret of killing BigB as well (Widows' Curse). This makes Joel and Scott the only targets, with the remaining three pairs all against them.
...But that's when their luck runs out. While chasing their enemies, Tango dies to something like a mob or minimal fall damage (Stupid Deaths Curse). And at this point, all Joel and Scott need to do is take out one of the other pairs and they stand a good chance against the other, which I feel is plausible enough here.
Joel and Scott, who are known as the Boat Boys in this timeline, are the final remaining survivors. And because Scott has already had a victory in Last Life, he makes the decision to sacrifice himself.
Joel wins Double Life.

Grian had never heard of the concept of a family until he came to Hermitcraft. However, since the entire server is a found family, Mumbo had a really hard time explaining what it was to him. In the end, Grian concluded that Mumbo was his "brother", Joe was his "father", Cleo was his "mother" and Doc and Xisuma were his "uncles".
Over the seasons, Grian had expanded his "family tree" to fit everyone. Sure, he doesn't understand these terms like the other hermits (who have had families at some point) do, but it's a sweet gesture.
Some of them (Pearl being his "sister", Impulse being his "brother", Scar being his "husband") make more sense than others (Bdubs and Keralis being "brothers", Zed and Tango being Doc's "sons").
Something so interesting about how bleak Grian's Third Life win was. He's the only winner, I think, who had no silver lining in winning.
Martyn, Joel, and Cleo all enjoyed winning, celebrated their wins. Scott's win was bittersweet but he was proud of himself and his team for going so far. Scar's ending gets angstified, but he was undeniably proud of himself, if nothing else. The only win I think reaches closest to as bleak is Pearl's, but even then, she manages to find a silver lining in Scott sacrificing himself for her, judging by her choice to have "I guess I forgive you after all" as her closing sentiment.
And then there's Grian. He doesn't find a silver lining in his win. He kills Scar, and he spirals. He's so sorry, he doesn't feel good, he can see Scar right in front of him- Grian jumps off a cliff. Not unusual for winners to kill themselves, but with Grian being the first, and with the nature of Third Life where deaths and life seemed to matter a whole lot more to everyone, it feels heavier, than when Scott, giggling, throws himself into the voice at the end of Simple Life.
I think there's something to be said for why Grian in particular has been so desperate for a second victory, why he's spent seasons steadily getting more desperate for it. Winning didn't feel like it should have. Winning didn't feel good, it didn't feel like a triumph, it didn't feel like his. It hurt, Grian was robbed of the pride he should have gotten in victory, and Grian wants a redo.
Of course, he never seems to get a redo. He loses. Over and over and over. Getting second place three times in a row- what a slap in the face that was, and now he's back down the ranks again. Joel, Martyn, and Scott all got their second win and Grian still doesn't even feel like he really got the first one.
Grian knows he shouldn’t read into it. It’s just a text. It’s just four words in a group chat full of people he barely knows. But “You are amazing” hits different when it comes from Scar, and no amount of architecture homework can drown out the sound of Grian’s own heart.
Between a sick Mumbo, a sister who is far too successful in her love life, and a heated debate about whether statistics is a scam, Grian is just trying to survive the day. But when a quiet moment in the drama room falls flat, he’s left wondering if he’s the only one hearing the music.

However, fixing things at home is only the beginning. There’s a knock at the door, and the rest of the Area 51 gang has a few words of their own
