general reminder that elena is first and foremost a victim and did not deserve the shit she went through, nor the vitriol the fandom shows her. she’s a good person that makes mistakes and bad decisions, forced into impossible choices by supernatural creatures far older than her that go against her morals and her desperate attempts to not lose herself in the awful things she has to do to keep herself and her loved ones safe. not to mention, most of the bad things she’s done is in response to someone wronging / threatening her first, yet that never seems to acknowledged. while it could just be that they had to keep every episode interesting, something was always happening, one after another - baby girl never got a damn break or a moment to breathe. she had no time to grieve or address any of her trauma and so she keeps pushing it down instead, burying it and covering it up with "i'm strong, i can handle this" and "i'll survive" without actually addressing anything. i'm so tired of people dragging her for crying or "making it all about her" (which isn't even bc of her, it's thanks to people not leaving her tf alone due to being the doppelgänger, hello?). whining about her being too self-righteous for trying to be good and encouraging others to do the same but then judging her / simply labeling her a hypocrite when she has to pull the same dirty tricks that everyone else does. sorrryyyy she's still trying to be a good person despite her shitty circumstances. people give villains so much slack but then award the traumatized high school student none and i rage about it daily

hope might be all that's left that no one had taken away, but he'd still lost his hold on it more than once. watched it shatter. felt it slip through his fingers like fine sand. it's breakable and powerful and malleable, sometimes, and sometimes it's a minefield, but letting go of it completely hasn't ever been an option. not forever. even at his lowest, he found a way to get it back. that's something else that she seems to understand without having to explain it. try, and hope we don't screw it up. " and when we do screw it up, we don't let it stop us. " history only repeats itself if you don't learn. she's strong, probably stronger than she gets credit for, and that digs an ache into the middle of his chest. some line about being their own worst critics filters through, fades out again. there's a brutal tragedy about it that he isn't even seeing for what it is : that they'll run themselves into the ground for every mistake, but they keep pouring out everything they've got for the sake of other people. the irony is that he recognizes it in elena without turning that lens the other way. so it's humbling, to hear all of that. to be told unapologetically that he hasn't fumbled every choice that he's made since the night he was bitten. he isn't used to that. a part of him doesn't know what to do with it.

she takes her turn to echo, ❛❛ we're still here. ❜❜ she doesn't sound any more certain of that being a good thing, though. not with how many people she's lost, how guilty she feels to be the one still standing. that no matter what pretty words she tells herself in her worst survivor's guilt moments, the reality is she's not special and there's no good reason she should be the one who's made it through. no reason other than the effort and sacrifice of the people she's lucky enough to call her friends and family. and perhaps the worst part, she's grown reliant on them doing it. she knows she has. she's grown comfortable, able to expect someone will step in when things get bad. now matter how much she tries to help and be there for others, she's more often than not at the center of the problem. no one can deny if it weren't for her, her loved ones wouldn't have had to go through most of what they have. ❛❛ we're still here because there are still more people we can help, ❜❜ she agrees. that's an easy answer, one that maybe takes a bit of the edge off her guilt. she's still alive because she can still be useful. his next words stop her before she can spiral any further, and she manages a soft chuckle. ❛❛ then it's the strongest marshmallow known to man. ❜❜

slender fingers toy with the hem of her shirt, the action self-soothing and done without her noticing. ❛❛ sometimes i fall into the trap of wondering how things could be different if . . . none of this had happened, ❜❜ she admits, almost sheepish. ❛❛ i know it's pointless, that we can't go back in time and change anything, but i do it anyway. usually when i'm trying to fall asleep. things just go round and round and i keep thinking about all the things i handled wrong and who i could've saved if i hadn't fucked it up. and i also know it's just the hindsight is 20/20 effect and i couldn't have known then what i know now, but that doesn't make it any easier. ❜❜ she's not sure why she's spilling her guts like this, other than there's something about scott that's just so. comfortable. easy to talk to. and now she's burdening him with her issues when he's surely got enough of his own things to worry about. she really can't stand herself sometimes, and she gives a self-deprecating laugh. ❛❛ sorry, i usually just write these kinda things in my diary to get them off my chest. didn't mean to word vomit on you like this. ❜❜

wanna write a headcanon about how elena's self-centeredness, especially in later seasons, is a trauma response to constantly being the center of / cause of dangerous people being in town. kinda makes sense that she'd get used to thinking a crisis at least involves her in some way and feeling the need to get involved after years of being the ~zomg doppelgänger!!~

sneaking up behind her, he reaches around and holds out a bouquet of cherry blossoms with a card containing two tickets for a trip away from the city for them. "excuse me? you wouldn't happen to know anyone who'd be interested in this do you?" spinning her around with his other hand before reaching up with the stuffed doe, playfully tapping it against her nose, "and this one is just to add to your collection."

she unfortunately gives a stereotypical gasp in response before to his surprise appearance before flushing pink at being startled, giggling softly as she accepts the flowers and card. ❛❛ why, good sir, i do in fact know someone who'd be interested in these. ❜❜ her smile is bright as she wraps an arm around his neck, the other cradling her presents to her chest. ❛❛ bambi will enjoy the much sought after privilege to sit on my bed instead of the storage net, ❜❜ she declares, nuzzling her nose against his. ❛❛ these tickets are for the two of us . . . right? ❜❜ she continues hopefully, smiling up at him.

he got her the cutest plush lamb he could find, purple and pink balloons tied to her chair while he’s waiting for her in her kitchen. a homemade birthday cake is on the table in front of her chair, he delicately drew flowers on it and wrote ‘ happy birthday elena ’ in pink icing. there’s also an envelope with three tickets for her favorite musician ( the tickets are for her, bonnie & care ) & of course, her favorite flowers.

rounding the corner into her kitchen, she's somehow still surprised despite knowing exactly how stefan is. ❛❛ thank youuuu stefan, ❜❜ she sing songs, though she beelines for him instead of the cake or the presents ⸻ she needs to recharge first, and does so by squeezing him tight. she hugs the plush next, holding it to her chest as she studies the cake. ❛❛ did you make this yourself? ❜❜ she asks, sounding impressed. ❛❛ it looks incredible. and perfect icing choice. ❜❜ she finally notices the tickets and squeals with excitement. ❛❛ stefan! how'd you get these? they sell out so fast it's like . . . impossible to get them before they're sold out! ❜❜ she throws her arms around him again. ❛❛ this is perfect, ❜❜ she whispers. ❛❛ thank you. ❜❜

her disposition has only been icier in the wake of their journey into cazador's lair ⸻ his creepy, ridiculous, ostentatious lair. she has spent a decent amount of their time trekking all over the lower city watching @vascend with barely contained suspicion and ire, disapproval practically oozing from her pores. she's doing so at this very moment, all prickly and silent. she's been doing her utmost to ensure astarion is never behind her, and so she intentionally slows down, waiting for him to pass before continuing on her way. if only this whole ordeal hadn't become something larger than what she could realistically handle on her own . . . alas, it would be too much of a hassle to attempt to find a new party after coming this far. she will simply have to make do. silently. judgingly.

the resale shop is quiet, and elena's enjoying the peace as she and @floripire peruse the racks ⸻ for things they don't really need, but she's ignoring that. between the two of them, the cart is already alarmingly full, and they don't seem to be showing any signs of stopping. she hems and haws, flicking through the assortment of colorful garments, unfortunately kinda liking everything. including a ridiculous dress and scarf combo, which she promptly becomes obsessed with. turning to flori, she seeks a second opinion as she winds it around her neck. ❛❛ okay, what do we think? i could get for like . . . a halloween party or something? ❜❜ it's june, but halloween can be an all year thing if you believe hard enough.
