I know others have said the same before, but I’ll be echoing the theory that Mello was praying just before he died. His rosary is one of the main focuses of the panel showing his dead body, and it appears to be looped through the steering wheel in a way that implies, to me at least, that it was being held up before it fell. I don’t think it could have landed where it did otherwise- it’s canonically long enough that it reaches the top of Mello’s abdomen. So it HAD to have been held up to land the way it did, ya know? The only way it could have fallen through that steering wheel is if it was dangling above it. And the only reason it would have been dangling above the steering wheel is if he was praying.
I don’t think he struggled much. I’m sure he felt pain for a moment. Then shock. Then he prayed, dropped the rosary, and slumped forward. And then it was over. He looks about as peaceful as somebody can possibly look while slumped forward with their eyes still open- so I like to think maybe he had some peace in his final moments. Maybe the prayer brought him peace. I hope it did, anyway.
