Rereading xxxHOLiC i find myself screaming at Doumeki. Just say you’re in love! Watanuki is dumb, so he won’t pick up on context clues unless you hit him over the head with the Jorougumo! That doesn't look like a thimble at all. It’s too narrow and carved with delicate patterns, lacking the typical round dent for pushing needles down. It's made of wood, which means the needle would poke holes in it and destroy the carving. There's no way it’s a practical thimble for use.

And it's not even used as a thimble, it's a tool to conduct exorcism. That sounds more like a ring, something you wear everywhere everyday.

If it looks like a ring, wears like a ring, it is a ring.

Watanuki can't convince me otherwise.
