The Majesty of the Forest (2015)
Eli Campbell
This past week, Carly and I were taking care of a baby field mouse. Carly was house-sitting, and the family’s cat was threatening to kill this baby. She pulled him away from the cat, determined to save him. She went out and bought all the supplies we needed to try to take care of him as per the advice of the internet mouse community, and we instantly fell in love with this little guy. He was so sweet. When we first found him, his eyes were still closed. After just a few days they were open, and his abundant personality came out. If you put a hand near him, he would immediately jump on and within a minute curl up with your finger and fall asleep. He was obviously adorable, with the softest brown fur and the best little paws.
Unfortunately, taking care of an orphaned baby mouse is not easy. More times than not, humans are not capable of replicating the intense care of a mother mouse. At first, he was doing very well adapting to his new life. We had planned so many things we were going to do for him, because we were so sure that he was going to make it, but two nights ago he became dehydrated and fell ill, and did not survive the night. Yesterday we buried him under the old apple tree in my yard.
We knew going into this that the chances of him surviving to adulthood were low, but we did our best to try to save him. Even though he did not live, I am happy that we at least tried, and that his life didn’t end as a snack for a chubby cat. We gave him as much love as we could muster, and he seemed to appreciate and trust us. I wish we could have had more time with him.
I love you, Oats
Solar Family #1: Lauree and Sarah
Lauree and Sarah have installed one large ground installation panel on their home, and have since produced approximately 200% of their monthly energy needs. Their power company caps this produced power off at 108%, so the remainder is put back into the grid. Still, they are producing far more energy than they can even hope to use, with only one panel. They are the first solar family I have documented.
If you are a part of a solar family living in the Northeastern USA, and you would like me to photograph you, contact me on here or email me at [email protected].
