Girlhood is just a long eternity of wanting to escape but not knowing what to escape from
5 things to do BEFORE university starts again
I live in Belgium so those tips might not be applicable to you depending on where you live but I tried to be as general as possible and I hope these tips will be useful for everyone!
Learn something outside of your major
Summer is the perfect time to learn something new that's not related to your area of study. If you would like to take online classes on a vast variety of subjects you can check out my article about 4 ways to learn online for FREE!
Build good eating habits
This one is the most important one in my opinion. I'm not saying you should never drink or enjoy good food with your friends just to avoid the freshman fifteen but please take care of your body. I am planning on writting a post dedicated to this so stay tuned but I would really advice you to take some time during the summer to find healthy recipes you like, learn how to cook if you are not planning on using the dining halls in your university and also educate yourself on how to compose a good meal. Your eating habits are so important and they can get messed up so easily with all the stress that university involves so make sure you are in a good place to start!
Learn how to do the basics on your own
If you are going to university it's likely that you will live in a dorm or appartment, possibly far away from your parents. While there is no need to stress out about all the things you are going to have to do on your own, it's important to be prepared in case you have a problem while on campus. For example, in my second year I was sick and had no idea where I could find a good doctor near me. Being sick sucks and makes the decision making process so much harder because you feel awful so knowing where to go, maybe having a doctor's number in your phone is a great idea. You will also have to do basic cleaning stuff laundry, cleaning the drain in the shower properly if you have an appartment,... Ask your family for advice on these little things!
Know your classes
What I mean by knowing your classes is that it is best to have an idea of the difficulty of the class before even starting it. If a class is known to be really difficult you maybe want to revise the required basics before starting it that way you don't drown into the amount of work you will have at the start of the semester. It is also very useful to know in advance where your classes are. I always like to check the location of my classes the week before to make sure I have at least a vague idea of where they take place. That way you don't have to go to campus 2 hours early before every class during the first week to get there on time.
Pick a hobby
Especially if it is your first year, I think picking up an extracurricular activity is essential to find balance between studying and having fun. I do track and field so I go to practice with people in my uni that I wouldn't normally train with back at home and we are now really close friends! I don't know how it works where you live but sororities can also be a great way to meet people. I know that they can be expensive in some country but there are always a bunch of clubs and associations that are free to join and that are looking for new members. Find something you like, it can be anything, and I'm sure you will find some people that like it to! And don't be afraid to try new things as well, everyone has to be bad at something in order to become good at it!
Habits that help me stay SANE in quarantine
During these strange times of lockdown, a lot of us have been feeling all different kinds of emotions. Some of you might relate to the feeling of disconnection from my everyday life I experienced. I didn't know why I was doing what I was doing anymore and I kind of forgot what my purpose was. Fortunately I found some activities and tips to gain back my excitement about the futur ahead and I wanted to share those in case anyone is struggling with that feeling right now.
Journaling
This is a really basic one but I thought it was still important to mention it. A couple of months into quarantine I started feeling like the days were blurred together and this meant that if something was bothering me one day, it was likely that I would continue worrying about it for several days because I never felt like there was a stopping point in my week or month to reflect on my daily life.
This is why I started journaling every night before bed. For someone that never used to do this growing up it was pretty difficult to keep up with it at first but now when something is bother me during the day, I automatically feel the need to write it in my journal just to let it out and move on the next day.
Walking
Just like journaling, walking helps me clear my mind and destress. If you find yourself overwhelmed with everything going on in your life or in the world in general, going on a walk might be a good idea. It doesn't have to be long, just getting some fresh air can help you a ton.
Creativity
Picking up a new creative hobby can really help not only to make time pass faster, it could also help you destress because it requires some sort of focus. That way you can't think about something else. It is also great if you want to improve your skills in something like drawing, painting, tie-dying shirts, cooking,...
Having a schedule
I'm still in the process of finding balance for this one but I think having a lose schedule is really important. For example, I try to have the same morning and night routines that include all the main habits I need to do to maintain a healthy life and mindset and no slip into a slump which is hard to get out off in these times. Those habits are for example brushing my teeth, taking a shower, eating breakfast, journaling,... Then when I am sure that these are completed, I try to work on other projects. The days I don't go to work, I try to dress like usual and do something productive because that's what is making me feel accomplished.
If you find yourself overthinking a quick way to try to stop the spiral is watching a movie or a Youtube video. I always have a list of movies to watch in case I get a little too stressed.
I hope that these tips can help you not go crazy during these difficult times, if you find yourself in a bad place mentally, please reach out to a professional for help and you can always message me if you need someone to talk to!
Being a girl in engineering
Being a girl in a very masculine industry can be though sometimes but I feel like people dramatize it a lot. Before going to university, when I started telling people that I wanted to study engineering, some of them where telling me I would have to be strong to find my place and have my voice be heard but so far it has been a pretty natural process. Of course, there are still way less girls than guys in my classes (30/70 I would say) but I don't feel like we are considered as inferior. I would even say that most of the guys I worked with during group projects were treating me as an equal and I rarely felt like my opinion wasn't taken into consideration because I was a girl.
On the other hand, out of all of my professors, only one was a girl and she wasn't even our main professor, which I find quite concerning. I think it is important to have diversity in our education and this in not the case in our teachers group.
I really hope that my experience continues like it has started for the rest of my degree and even during my career. I have only had a not so great experience with a classmate once and I think it was more related to the individual person and not the system of our school.
I would really encourage every girl that has an interest in maths and sciences to consider engineering! Don't be afraid to be surrounded by guys, for the most part they are really respectful and kind.
If you have any questions related to engineering feel free to message me!
3 Ethical and sustainable clothing brands + AFFORDABLE
Last week I was looking for affordable and ethical basic t-shirts. I started looking online and quickly realised that it wasn't as easy to find as I thought. After a little bit of research, I found a website that rates the sustainability and ethicality of clothing brands : Good on You [insert link]. It allowed me to discover a few brands that I think would be great if, like me, you are just starting you journey to a more sustainable lifestyle. Disclaimer: I haven't tried any of those brands yet so I can only share my thoughts based on other people reviews and the research that I did and obviously this is not sponsored.
NU-IN
NU-IN is by far my favourite. This brand has everything is was looking for: sustainable, ethical and super affordable. As a student, I don't have a lot of money to spend on clothing and we all know that producing sustainable clothing is expensive commpared to fast fashion but NU-IN is surprisingly affordable and has really great basics! I would recommend you to check their website next time you feel like ordering from a fast fashion brand because I bet that they have the same article for a resonable price and way less hurtful for the planet. They also show you some icons in each product desciption to explain how it is sustainable like for example "Organic", "Reduced CO2", "Recycled",... And in one of the section on their website, they explain where their products are manufactured and the materials they use which I found really informative! This is the website I am considering ordering my basics from.
Organic Basics
I discovered this brand thanks to a sponsored video by Nayna Florence . I am always sceptical about sponsored content but I did my own research and according to Good on You, Organic Basics is a really cool sustainable brand. It is especially great for underwear and activewear. I would say though that it is a little bit more expensive than NU-IN but that is very normal for an ethical and sustainable brand in my opinion. They also have a section on their website explaining everything they do to reduce their footprint and it is really informative. For example, you can learn where their products are made and which materials they use but also how they reduced the impact of their website which is something I had never seen! They also have the label PETA which certifies that their products are vegan.
Armedangels
Armedangels is similar in price to Organic Basics but I wanted to include it because I really like the design of their products which is a little bit more colorful than the other brands I talked about. I think their t-shirts are what really attracted me because they look like something you can buy in a more traditional store with cute and trendy designs. They are also vegan friendly and you can find a section on their website explaining the materials they use and everything they do to ensure that their brand is sustainable. Plus they are having a sale right now so if you are interested definitely go for it!
black lives matter. they always have.
How to organize your school material when the semester ends
Today's post is about how to organize your school material when the semester ends! 🎓
Physical material
Binders are your best friends for this. I find the easiest way to keep all your notes organised is to store them in one binder for each semester. If these are really big classes you could use multiple binders but usually I can fit everything in one. Then you can use dividers for each subject or simply use some plastic sheet protector. I find it useful to avoid damaging my notes so I usually use the second method.
Digital material
I think we often underestimate how much our digital clutter can make us feel anxious. That's why at the start of each semester I create a folder for each class and I try to keep them organised during the year. Especially for classes that are like little "projects" or more reseach-based, you will need to gather a lot of info that you don't necessarly want to keep forever so cleaning a little bit eachc week or so can be useful.
At the end of the semester I also like to go through my favourites in my search engine. Just like I gather a lot of pdf's in my folders, I tend to pin a lot of web pages as favourites when I research some info for my classes. So I like to go through it and only keep the pages that are still relevant.
4 ways to learn things online for FREE
Youtube
Youtube is my favourite of them all. A big advantage of this platform is that it’s completely free! It’s the easiest and has by far the most diversified content. You can pretty much learn anything on Youtube. If you are looking for purely educational content, you can check out Tedx. They have a bunch of talks from experts in a great variety of fields. Other Youtubers that I recommend if you want to increase your productivity are Ali Abdaal and Matt D’Avela.
Skillshare
Skillshare is an online platform where people can share their knowledge by making classes on variable subjects such as finance, social media management, arts,… One of the main advantages of Skillshare is that the classes are usually longer than the videos on Youtube so you can get a lot more valuable informations because the teacher goes more in depth about the topic. One of the downsides is that you do have to pay about 10 dollars a month to have access to those videos but they offer a month free trial (two months if you use the code provided by the Youtubers I mentioned above). Some of the classes even have a project that you are supposed to work on while taking the class so that your learning is more concrete.
Khan Academy
This one is a website I use often to remind myself how to do basic things in math that I previously learned in school but can’t remember properly. You could also learn new material thanks to their large variety of subjects. What I like about it is that the content of the lessons is really precise so if you want to learn something specific this is your best option. They offer classes mainly on mathematics and sciences but also coding and economics! If you are from the United States they also have programs for the SAT, LSAT, college admissions,… And it is free!
Universities online classes
Last but not least, you can take online classes offered by some universities for free! I have never tested this method but I know that edX regroups a lot of classes from different universities such as Harvard, MIT, Sorbonne and other ones from all over the world. You have to pay for some courses but a lot of them are free and I think it is a great way to expend your knowledge with quality content and professors.

5 things you can do NOW to make your futur easier!
Take pictures of everything, like really everything!!!
I struggle a bit with that one because I don't really like being in pictures but I think there is nothing more helpful when I feel sad than looking at old pictures of the most memorable moments of my life. I feel like every time I go though my pictures, so many little details come back and it brings me so much joy! And you don't need a fancy camera or a polaroïd to do that, actually I got a 100 pictures from my phone printed in a polaroïd format recently and I found a coupon code so it only costed me 7 bucks?! It's also a great gift for friends!
Learn how to type fast
Advice from someone who thought she would always be fine with not knowing how to type with her ten fingers but lol I'm now an engineering student so most of my work is on a computer and I can not tell you how frustrating it is to know I am losing soooo much time because of my past lazy self... (I am now working on it, it's never to late!)
Save up some moneyyy
Whether your parents are able to financially support your needs right now or not, I think it's important to learn to manage your own money at a young age. There is really no reason why you shouldn't at least try to earn some money! There is going to be a time when you need it and you will be really glad you worked at your local coffee shop every saturday morning for a whole summer because otherwise you would have some problems...
Pick ONE habit you really want to implement in your daily routine
This can be anything like eating healthier or learning 10 words in a new language every day but I feel like when I focus on one single thing at a time, it's easier for me to keep up with it until it becomes a habit because I'm not overwhelmed by 5 different new tasks every day.
Take care of you skin
Seriously when you're 18 you can think "Oh whatever if I don't were sunscreen, I wanna be tanned!". I have been there, I get it but you also want not to have wrinkles all over your face when you're 30, not to mention skin cancer... So please just put your sunscreen on! Also don't forget to moisturize and remove any makeup before you go to bed!!!

Your Life is Happening Now
So about a year ago my philosophy teacher said something that has really stuck with me.
“When I was your age I couldn’t wait to grow up,” he said. “All throughout high school I was waiting for my life to start. I used to tell myself once I got a car then my life would begin. And then I did, and it didn’t. ‘Okay,’ I thought, 'When I get to university then my life will really start.’ But then I got there and it wasn’t much different, until a few years later it hit me: oh shit, my life is happening now.”’
That’s something I’ve tried to keep with me, because it’s so easy to forget. I’m sure many of us do. I am guilty of thinking in a few years, once I’m settled down and can afford things, my life will begin. Or when I get my license, or a move out. I’m guilty of cancelling time with the people that matter to me because I’m planning for that day in the future when 'I can do stuff’. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with working towards a goal and being disciplined but it’s so important to remember that you shouldn’t fantasize about the ideal you and a time when your life can finally begin without working towards it. Your life is happening now.
