well, he couldn’t say he didn’t feel the same way. fucking elise, even been near her, after all that had happened between them, didn’t exactly feel like progress. it was quite the opposite, it felt like giving in to an old addiction. there had been a time where he thought no other woman would ever make him feel as alive as the blonde beauty did and he hadn’t been wrong. she did make him feel alive, just as much as she drove him crazy. but he was a father now, he’d moved on so much from the man he used to be when he was in a relationship with her and yet, standing right there in front of her, he had to face the fact that he hadn’t changed that much at all. he was smoking a cigarette in bed and she was dressing herself again, getting ready to leave him before they fell back on their familiar pattern again. “ we can’t keep doing this to each other forever ” he admitted outloud, his gaze finally moving towards her. that had not been the first time he’d said that to her but he kept hoping it’d be the last. “ i can’t put myself through this shit again. neither can you ”

elise regretted saying those words the moment they slipped off her lips, wondering just why she even voiced her thoughts out loud. as much as she would like to think that she has matured from the immature little girl she used to be, it would be a lie. parts of her did mature but there are some aspects that remained the same, just like fueling the same addiction she used to have years ago. buttoning up her shirt with her back turned against him as she listened to him speak, a quiet scoff escaped her lips as she glanced over her shoulder. "we can't--and yet, we are," the blonde pointed out bluntly. this one was on both of them and this cruise is too small for the two of them. as she did the last button, she spun around to meet his eyes again. “it’s not healthy. we never were,” she murmured under her breath, the truth coming from her mouth. and yet, there was no clear resolution when there’s still so much attraction between the two of them.

    “Yeah, tell me about it.” Jasper usually attempted to be an optimist, especially when it came to things they could no longer change, but a large percentage of their past dates were just plain horrible. There was nothing to be gained, nor learned. Except maybe learning and re-learning what they certainly did not want in another person.      “Oh, you gotta give me more details than that!” Jasper insisted. Their food arrived and even despite the delicious aroma, they were fully focused on Elise and her story.

"do i?" the blonde trailed off with a far off look on her face as she was clearly toying with the thought. though it would make for a good anecdote, she does like leaving some of the details unexplained so for the other to fill it with their imagination. with their food arriving, elise found herself steering the direction of the conversation into that. "oh look! your mac and cheese is here already and it smells amazing."

Because I don’t want you to get hurt, that’s why!  grinning a little too deviously as her eyes gleamed darkly at his response to why he pulled her back into the room after finding her sitting on the railings, she let out of a scoff. “i didn’t peg you as the type who cared--” she paused for a second before the harsh retort came spilling from her lips, “besides, i think you’ve done enough in that aspect.” thinking they could even be civilized for one second was a huge mistake. even when they were together, all they did was hurt each other with scathing words. and yet, here she was, sitting on the floor of his cabin with a bottle of tequila in hand that she was downing like water. when has she ever not been a mess with him? it was as if he brought out the worst side of her. “and fyi, i wasn’t planning to jump overboard or anything. i’m not suicidal.” she was destructive, yes, but she’s not going to throw her life away like that. // @silas-lahey
