It was hard to ignore the stares that came her way as she walked through the halls of the hospital. When you’re a patient for a year though, that’s to be expected. Nobody thought she was going to survive after that crash, not even she believed it. She was ready to accept the fact that like Mark, she was going to end up dying in her hospital bed. When she found out she was going to live, she wasn’t sure if she was glad or not. The recovery process after having your abdomen and legs crushed by a plane wasn’t an easy one. It was one filled with many surgeries and lots of physical therapy. Not to mention, regular therapy to help her start to cope with the awful PTSD she was suffering from.
There was a part of Lexie that had considered not coming back to the hospital again. But she knew that surgery was what she was meant to do, she wasn’t going to just quit. Not when she only had a year left to finish her residency. So now she was making her way towards the peds floor, preparing herself for what was likely going to be a busy day.
She’d heard of the new surgeon that was brought in, since Arizona had gotten hurt too and was taking time off because of her leg, but she hadn’t met the new doctor yet. She didn’t have a reason to be seeing a peds surgeon, given that she was a grown adult, so she was a little nervous.
Lexie took a deep breath, spotting who she assumed was the new doctor by the peds floor nurses station. She approached the other woman slowly. “Hi,” she said. “I’m Lexie— uh, Dr. Grey. You’re Dr. Carter, right? I’m on your service today.”
Eliza stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom, trying to psych herself up. She knew that she’d be working with one of the plane crash survivors today. The chief had told her so that she could be prepared for any stares or comments made today by nurses or other doctors. If she were being honest with herself, she was terrified. She didn’t know what to say or how to talk about what had happened. She had spoke to Dr. Robbins, just to assure her that she wasn’t after her job and that she wanted her input on a few cases. It seemed to make the woman a little brighter and she was glad that she didn’t hate her.
Coming here from Boston, she was told that it was the biggest mistake. She was making slightly less here than she had but she also needed this fresh start. Having to work with Tyler’s father and see him every day, it was hard on her. Watching him screw interns and her fellow doctors, it just didn’t rub her the right way. So she moved out here. Bought a condo, brought her son with her and worked her butt off to get the respect the deserved. She knew people loved Dr. Robbins, but for the foreseeable future, she was the head of peds.
She straightened her lab coat, moved her hair around a bit and walked out of the bathroom and towards the nurses station. She smiled at the nurses, making small talk with them and chatting while she looked at one of her patient’s charts before she felt a presence beside her.
She turned and gave a smile to the woman. “It’s nice to meet you, Dr. Grey. Glad to have you on with me today. I hear you’re a pretty great surgeon so I’m excited to see that in action.” She turned and gestured to the room beside her. “Shall we?”
