Development blog for the upcoming IF: The Whisper in the Mist. This IF is based on Pacific Rim media (with a focus on the 2013 film).

When I was a kid, whenever I'd feel small or lonely...I'd look up at the stars and wonder if there was life up there. Turns out I was looking in the wrong direction.

When alien life entered our world it was from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. A fissure between two tectonic plates. A portal between dimensions.

They called it the Breach.

It’s funny how quickly things can change.

One minute you’re on top of the world, then the next, your world is crumbling down around you…

Five years ago, you and your drift partner had the highest success rates of any Jaeger pilots. Now, one horrific tragedy and a hasty promotion later, you’re pushing pencils thousands of miles away from the place you called home.

That is, until a Kaiju with stealth abilities like nothing that’s ever been seen before crawls out of the Breach.

Recalled back into service, you’re forced to team up with your once rival under the command of your former drift partner, and the advice of two scientists who seem more interested in the Kaiju’s than your safety. All while someone with more money than sense attempts to undermine you at every turn.

With everything seemingly against you, will you take up the mantle of hero once more or will you let the darkness plaguing your mind consume you?

Customisable MC (including name, pronouns, appearance, and identity). Personality is semi-set (MC uses humour and sarcasm as a coping method for their trauma) for a majority of the time, however there will be chances for character development and therefore more personality choices.

Pilot a Jaeger, fight Kaiju’s, and keep the world safe all while battling your own demons.

Five characters are available to romance. Two are only romanceable in a (triad) poly.

Ciaran O’Doherty [M/F] - Hot-tempered and viciously in denial of the love they have for you that has only seemed to grow in your absence, Ciaran is your newly assigned drift partner and self-proclaimed rival. [PROFILE].

Killian Zhao [M/F] - Once a talented pilot and your former drift partner, Killian is now your formidable and highly respected commanding officer with a soft spot reserved just for you. [PROFILE].

Brin Kazlauskas [M/F/NB] - Waspish, fastidious, and someone that no one wants to be on the wrong side of, Brin is a K-Science officer with a wicked protective streak towards Zai and you . Only romanceable in a poly with Zai. [PROFILE].

Zai Oumarou [M/F/NB] - Despite a somewhat anxious disposition around those xe doesn’t know, Zai is a K-Science officer with a lot of enthusiasm and a deep curiosity towards Kaiju. Only romanceable in a poly with Brin. [PROFILE].

Ajax Nikolaou [M!NB/F!NB] - With a twisted determination to be a giant pain in your ass, Ajax is the ruthless CEO of Nikolaou Industries, a company that seeks to make the Pan Pacific Defense Corps completely redundant. [PROFILE].

Ferelith [F] - The baby Kaiju with a sweet character that was rescued by Zai, Ferelith loves cuddles, Lord of the Rings (according to Zai), and munching on Brin’s lab coat.

Ciaran’s already making funeral arrangements and moving Dog in rolling their eyes. “As if you’re going to die with me by your side…Dog would never let me give them belly rubs again.”

Killian takes it a bit more seriously. “Of course I would, you know I’d do anything for you and Dog,” they’d reply with a small smile. “But I think both Dog and I would prefer you with us so try to stay alive.”

Zai says yes so fast that you half think xe wants you to drop dead so xe can have Dog. “Of course we would, we’d give them the best life ever! They could sleep in our bed and play with Ferelith and get the tastiest treats…” That goes on for a while before Brin places their hand over Zai’s mouth. “As Zai said, we would of course take care of Dog, but we’d prefer to have you remain apart of this unit we’ve forged…so don’t be an idiot out there.”

Ajax looks at Dog, Dog gives Ajax the nastiest side eye known to dogkind. “I have a feeling that Dog would send me to the afterlife with you if I tried to take them,” they’d say, still watching Dog warily. “Probably best that you retire now and preserve your life.”

Hello!! Thank you <3

Sorry that I’ve been away so long, I honestly didn’t even realise that it had been three months 💀 a lot has happened in my personal life that I won’t bore you guys with, but I have managed to get some of the demo done.

The prologue is complete and chapter one is halfway there. Twine still fights me every step of my coding journey so that’s where the main delay lies.

I’ve also been working on a private project as practice in between which allows me some reprieve without the stress of knowing other people are going to read it lol. I’m not sure if other people do this, but I actually found it quite helpful personally. I may one day release it to you guys but it would need a lot of polishing before then.

Anyway, I hope to have the demo out soon. It won’t be this week because I’m going away for a few days next weekend, but hopefully once I’m back from that, I can start outlining a plan.

Novaturient is still on hiatus though. I haven’t even looked at it for the past few months tbh. Eventually I’ll get back to it, but I’m not giving any solid time as to when.

ROs in a competition to get the most numbers: how's it going for each of them?

Most -> Least

Killian -> Zai -> Brin -> Ciaran -> Ajax

Killian doesn’t even have to try, they’re the base darling. Everyone and their grandma has a crush on Killian. The problem is that they’d probably get mobbed.

Zai is a total sweetheart, but xe isn’t above bribery in the form of letting people cuddle Ferelith in exchange for numbers.

Brin has that hot, unattainable vibe going for them so people are so shocked that they’re even acknowledging their existence that they hand over their numbers before they even realise what they’re doing.

Ciaran, while very attractive, is so prickly/grumpy towards people when they ask that most people would think Ciaran’s being held at gunpoint. Some give it to them and some would want to save themselves the inevitable disappointment.

Ajax is obnoxious and cocky and everyone delights in turning them down :)

SHARED DESIRES

This short (spicy-ish in a very vague, very gender-neutral (i hope) way) story was inspired by Newmann fanart I saw of Hermann and Newt sharing a dream of them kissing. The artist is @/dad-dumpster.

As always this is unedited and vaguely proofread, so any mistakes are my own. I’m pretty sure the tense changes like 8x but whatever.

Your lips crash against theirs, knocking the breath from their lungs.

That’s not unusual, although it’s usually because of your mere presence rather than your lips.

They kiss you back with a fierce hunger, with a need to wreck you, to consume you, to make you crave them as much as they crave you.

Your hands slide up their stomach and push, and they’re powerless to do anything but fall.

They hit their bed and you’re on them. Your teeth nipping at the skin of their neck and soothing the sting with your tongue. All they can do is pant and tip their head back for you. Their hands latch onto your hips and dig in. They’ll probably leave bruises, and that thought thrills them even more.

Your lips have reached their jaw, but it’s too much and not enough all at once, and they delight in your surprised yelp as they flip you onto your back.

They immediately latch onto your neck, paying you back with a love bite that you’ll struggle to cover up.

Your hands fumble with their trousers, pushing them down just enough to gain access to what you want. Your fingers explore and they moan, their voice echoing across the space.

You laugh, triumphantly, even as your pupils swallow the colour of your pretty eyes. It drives them crazy to see how affected you are by them.

They decide to return the favour, pulling your hands away from them, so they can tug your own trousers down and lay between your thighs. The only thought in their head is that they’d die here quite happily.

Their mouth descends onto you, and your hips jerk as your snarky words are cut off by a choked out moan. A bit of information to file away for later.

They want to make you feel good. Want to taste your desire on their tongue. Want to be the one you pleasure yourself to thoughts of. Want to be the only one you turn to when the need gets too much.

They’ll ingrain themselves on your soul if they have to.

You scream, your thighs tightening around their head and your hands yanking at their hair.

They’re in heaven.

It’s the only explanation.

Ciaran jolts awake, their heart thundering in their chest and their breathes coming out in harsh pants.

They wipe the sweat from their brow.

A dream.

The only explanation that actually makes sense.

They take a few gulps of their water from the glass they had left on night stand, and attempt to do what they always do when it comes to you.

They shove their feelings down into an abyss and pray that they never come crawling out.

Once they calm down enough to get back to sleep, they place their water back on their night stand, and flop onto their mattress. They hit their pillow a few times and force their eyes to close.

Ciaran is a master of burying their head in the sand by now. This is no different.

At least, it isn’t until the next morning when they spot you and you can’t look them in the eyes.

Ciaran raises an eyebrow at your behaviour as they sit opposite you.

“What’s up with you?” They ask, curious. “You dream about me or something?”

They don’t know why they asked you that, but your reaction makes them freeze up.

Did they send you their dream through the connection between your minds? Did you send them yours?

Or…did you share the dream? Your subconscious coming together with theirs in a mess of both of your desires.

They shake the thought away.

Breakfast, surrounded by some of the sharpest minds in the world, was not the place to be thinking about such things.

“Idiot, just eat your breakfast and stop being weird.”

That snaps you out of it.

Good.

Your nonsense should hopefully be able to stop them from launching over the table and kissing you senseless in front of everyone.

What's the latest/earliest MC and Killian had to get up for a breach event?

I remember the first movie starting in the AM and it made me wonder who'd be the most awake/sleepiest between MC and Killian.

Killian is one of those people that are awake no matter what time it is. It scares the living daylights out of Ciaran and Brin wants to do experiments on them. I suppose it depends on your MC but personally I’d be the sleepy one esp early in the morning.

I think the worst they ever had was after a twelve hour shift of nothing but shit, they finally got to go to sleep and then had an emergency five minutes later and had to haul ass into their jaeger 😭

I’m think they’d enjoy a simple engagement and wedding.

Killian’s ideal wedding would be in the woods with lights strung up in all the trees and flowers everywhere. They’re not big on being the centre of attention so just having close family and friends at their wedding would be enough for them.

Public engagements are a hard no, it will make them extremely uncomfortable.

I think they’d enjoy a spontaneous proposal. You’re just looking at them doing something entirely mundane like reading a book or watering the plants or cuddling Dog when you realise you want to see this sight for the rest of your life and ask them to marry you then and there. The rings and everything else can come later, in that moment, it’s just about you and Killian and the future you’ll have together.

As for how they’d propose to you, I think Killian would arrange a picnic for dinner on one of the viewing platforms that give you a stunning view of the stars. Then once you’d eaten, they’d start pointing out constellations and then they’d pull out the ring as you were looking for them. You’d look back at Killian to see them holding out the ring and smiling.

This might be one of my favourite scenes of anything ever cause it’s so blindly obvious how connected they are after the drift!!!! The way they carry this speech - it doesn’t sound at all like two separate people with separate thoughts, this is ONE thought, ONE message and it is bouncing between them speaking so effortlessly. It’s so different to how they talk together earlier on in the film - they don’t cut each other off or argue or talk over each other, the sentences flow between the both of them like they’re one person. It’s honestly amazing to hear two people sound so incredibly connected

You play the Heir to Cordia, a county that once loomed large in the History of Men, but for centuries now subservient to the Emperor of Man.

Antonius Fabianus (He/Him, 24) The charismatic and honourable second born son of the Emperor, Antonius, is a man of Knightly Virtue. And while at first he may seem naive, gullible, and stupid, spending time with him, you will find out that brain and brawns can fit together. He is a muscular man with short black hair and blue eyes. He has reached an impressive height of 6’3

Tiberius Fabianus (He/Him, 25) The polar opposite of his younger brother, Tiberius is the Heir to the Empire of Man, and quiet. He is neither charismatic nor bold, instead he prefers to sit and listen. Sometimes you can even catch him talking to himself. In appearance, he looks very similar to his younger brother, though unlike his younger brother, he is a man of thin almost sickly stature. He is just shy of 6 feet.

Galadia Atiana (She/Her, 22) Galadia is a simple woman from a small village, and while most would think her illiterate and simple, she is quite the opposite. Not only has she learned to read and write, but it seems she is much stronger than anyone in her village. To the surprise of many, she is a well muscled woman of average height with brown hair and green eyes.

Irene (She/Her, ???) Supposedly a peasant woman, Irene is a strange figure. She is of Elven Descent, with sharp ears and silver hair. Her Eyes are brown, with a tinge of gold within them, giving her a strange appearance. Aside from that, she makes quite the strange figure, she is sickly thin, only accentuated by her incredible height. She is 6’6 tall.

The Dog a formerly injured dog who has come to provide emotional support on your journey.

Kyle / Keira Moreno

Your colleague, a police inspector, and one of the rudest people you have ever met. Sharp and stern, K is surprisingly perceptive, and they use it to really see you. The good, the bad. Everything. Appearance: icy blue eyes, dark red hair, very pale skin.

Alexis 'Lex / Lexie' Conlan

Your best friend, and also your former partner from times when you were just a patrol officer. With a heart of gold and an approachable attitude, L always chooses you over the others. Appearance: forest green eyes, copper hair, beige freckled skin.

Morgan Schoivell

Your other colleague, a highly-skilled lab technician. M is rather reserved when it comes to emotions, and after almost a year of working together, M is still a walking mystery for you. Appearance: dark brown eyes, ash blonde hair, light skin.

Roderick / Rebecca Reyes

The commanding agent of the Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Team sent to catch the killer. Overbearing and ruthless, R has their own way of getting things done. Appearance: steel gray eyes, blonde hair, pale skin.

Theodore 'Theo' / Theresa 'Tess' Vazquez

Another member of the STAR team. With a cocky smile, T is full of flirts and sneering comments, regardless of the occasion. T has no doubts about what they want and isn't afraid to vocalize it. Appearance: dark green eyes, black curly hair, rich brown skin.

Isaac / Iris Brailsford

I looks the most mature and approachable of STAR's fellow agents. Looks can be deceiving, though. Working behind the scene and watching from afar, I carries all the scars within. Appearance: hazel eyes, dark brown hair, olive skin.

Sebastian / Selena Goldschmidt

Someone new and temporary, S has a velvety voice and a perfect smile that doesn't reach their eyes. You're not sure if your paths will cross in the future, but something tells you S can't be trusted. Appearance: black eyes, long black wavy hair, bronze skin.

Other notable characters:

Your twin-sister: Your sweet, kind, caring, and gentle twin sister. She always tries to be there for you, and show how much she appreciates you, no matter what. Chief of Police, Kendrick Nash: Your boss, who is not handling his job so well after the recent death of his husband, Klemens Bergmann. Detective Klemens Bergmann: Police chief's husband, who happened to be a senior detective and your mentor. He was the first victim, murdered under mysterious circumstances.
