Concept statement
WHY DO WE DETERMINE SOMEONES WORTH THROUGH THE APPEARANCE IN RELATION TO THEIR HEALTH?
This question is what I am summing my research and conceptual ideas down to. I am reposing the initial research question, on aesthetic appearances (Q5) in a more personal way. Within my practice I looked at the conversation between fat acceptance and those opposing to overweight people and their health. I’d like to abolish the idea that someones health and appearance determines their worth. I want to start the conversation in a manner that favours people bodies as their own. As an initial experiment, when i put this idea out, someone starting to comment on my behaviour being self destructive. After then replying that That indeed was not the point of the topic, I was told that never the less, because I’m starting this conversation, I will be subject to comments and opinions on my body whether I was initially asking for it or not? This is the exact attitude I would like to question in my work.
To communicate this I’ve created cake sculptures and a photograph out of an 2D artwork and inserting myself into the artwork. The cake sculptures are a juxtaposition of the the worth we place on things according to it’s image and health, hence the use of cakes themselves, a symbol of ‘bad diet’. I also created a photograph which incorporates an experiment with type as well as a self portrait to interrupt the conversation going on behind me, which includes both sides of the conversation on fat acceptance. This is a strong statement that my body is mine, and not for anyone else.
Throughout my practice I’ve made sure to continue to refer back to the course concept and continue to research and develop ideas within the 7 concepts. For continued divergent and convergent thinking, I researched materials and techniques of artist to expand my own ideas from my initial poster. the use of putting myself into the image of lettering developed from the work of Alexa Meade, who used the body as a canvas in order to play with the 3D and 2D. I expanded my ideas through thinking of the body as a canvas, and bring the idea of beauty and perceptions of the beauty in the body back into my concept. This then flowed into my cake sculptures, where I took this idea of worth in beauty and less in the not beautiful a juxtaposed them in two different cakes.
I kept alien methods in mind by continuing to be influenced by and using the practice of other artists in my work. This is evident in both my use of food as a medium and to use a self portrait in a ‘alien’ way for my photograph. The idea of working with food was developed from Alexa Meades initial photographs of acrylic on food, as well as the Obesity is Suicide campaign by Brandon Knowlden. The use of self portrait was also influenced by Frida Kahlo and her depictions of herself in surreal environment.
Both affects and body politics and desire relate very closely to my concept. My works are also very much involved in the social politics of public view and cultural thought on the overweight body and it’s aesthetics, what’s acceptable and what is not, and question this. My desire for this project is for audience to react different to how i often see people react to the idea that overweight bodies are separate from their health.
Within my works I’ve been very careful to present both sides of the current conversation that is happening about fat acceptance, in order to present different context. I didn’t want to work with only my opinions but present the conversation and my body as my own to an audience, but also researching and showing and questioning the other side of the conversation. I also was influenced by Erwin Wurm’s sense of humour in his presentation of similar ideas. He said in an interview “Most artworks try to represent something lofty and important, but I find pathos repulsive. I want to address serious matters but in a light way.” I wanted to capture this in my own work with my cakes.
I used the concept of value within my exploration with worth. What is worth more or less. The relationship between fresh flowers and dying flowers, their difference in value, in juxtaposition to the relationship between beauty and weight, and how it will change ones worth. I also looked at ‘uncreativity’ through using a simple recipe that can be found anywhere on the internet very easily, or bought for 72cents at Woolworth’s, to create my sculptures.

Justification of design choices through the course concepts
concept statement drafting ->
DIVERGENT/CONVERGENT - Through my continued research of different materials and techniques of other artists, I furthered my concept to relate to the idea's I was trying to convey. For example, the use of putting myself into the image of lettering developed from the work of Alexa Meade, who used the body as a canvas in order to play with the 3D and 2D.
ALIEN METHODS- Research continued to influence how I used materials and my end products, interpreting and using different artists practicing in my work. This is evident in both my use of food as a medium and to use a self portrait in a 'alien' way for my photograph. The idea of working with food was developed from Alexa Meades initial photographs of acrylic on food, as well as the Obesity is Suicide campaign by Brandon Knowlden. I was also influenced by 'Semiotics Of the Kitchen' by Martha Rosler's but am not using it as a main source as the concept and videography isn't evident in my works.
AFFECTS AND BODY POLITICS- My works are very much involved in the social politics of public view and cultural thought on the overweight body and it's aesthetics, what's acceptable and what is not, and question this.
DESIRE- My desire for this project is for audience to react different to how i often see people react to the idea that overweight bodies are separate from their health. I'm trying to make people separate someones worth from whatever weight they are, and at whatever health state they are in. Worth is not determines by how sick someone is or is not. and Worth is not determined by the aesthetic appearance of one.
CONTEXTS AND TIME - Within my works I've been very careful to present both sides of the current conversation that is happening about fat acceptance. I didn't want to work with only my opinions but present the conversation and my body as my own to an audience, but also researching and showing and questioning the other side of the conversation.
VALUE - I used the concept of value within my exploration with worth. What is worth more or less. The relationship between fresh flowers and dying flowers, their difference in value, in juxtaposition to the relationship between beauty and weight, and how it will change ones worth.
UNCREATIVITY - I looked at 'uncreativity' through using a simple recipe that can be found anywhere on the internet very easily, or bought for 72cents at Woolworth's, to create my sculptures.
I'm trying to look at different ways of documenting my cakes in a way that communicates. I experimented with a polaroid for a more homely, personal documentation of the cakes, as well as photos of live flowers and dead flowers close up. However these didn't turn out so well. I still really like the outcome of this experiment, but don't think it expresses what I need it to.
An edited version of the photo I took placing myself in the frame I think I want to push this further as I'm not super happy with it just as is. I'll try to do some more experiments with techniques from my research, with the background and see how it turns out.
Wah.

This is the backdrop to next experiment. I'll be taking the practice of a few of my research artists by painting myself and placing my body into the frame, not blend in but to interrupt, as if interrupting the conversation flowing behind me.
"Why do we look at people and determine their worth through their health? stop assuming things about bodies that aren't yours. Don't you love yourself to do all you can for your body? Do not make the assumption that loving myself equates me wanting to loose weight. It's my body, not yours. I will never believe anyone who says they love themselves and in the next breath continues to hurt themselves. It is wisdom, you are a god damn tree stump with leaves sprouting out. why are you even here in the first place, isn't my body? You shouldn't put this in a public forum if you don't want negative comments on your body. But why? why do we look at people and determine their worth through their body fat percentage what is the social norm anyway and I know I am because I say I am You are valuable why.... why not"
Cake number 2 Same dealio as the last one but I made real icing instead and then painted it with good colouring to make the flower. I'll talk about the design and justifications in a master post later on.
Cake number 1. I'm not super happy about how this turned out. But I can always take the icing layer off and try again I made the icing out of play dough, as I thought it might be easier to paint on. But I'll have to see how this next one turns out because in thinking if making it completely eatable and use actually icing and paint into it with food colouring instead if acrylics.
BRAINSTORM
Looking at my research and artists and techniques I want to experiment with and try I still got a little bit stuck, not quite sure how to fully communicate my ideas. So I did a bit of a brainstorm of weird different possibilities.
WHY DO WE DETERMINE SOMEONES WORTH THROUGH THE APPEARANCE IN RELATION TO THEIR HEALTH? Looking at the conversation between fat acceptance and those apposing to overweight people and their health. I'd like to abolish the idea that someones health and appearance determines their worth. - cake decoration? - working with food, does it divert too much from my artists, how would I decorate it? type, images, allude to property//"hands off my body". Use of food in relation to health - images of flowers to create really beautiful cakes to juxtapose worth and no worth - one worth blooming flowers and one with dying flowers - juxtaposes flowers worth at different stages (does that really convery what I'm trying to say?)
- using my body to create a 2d image - video myself painting the conversation onto paper up on a wall with the word "mine" on my back. all about type and conversation. my body interrupting the conversation.
- A leo? use tapestry or stitching to create the type and conversation I would otherwise paint on the wall, on a leotard size 20. a piece of clothing considered not suitable for public wear by someone who is a size 20
Alexa Meade's TED talk on using the body as canvas and playing with how 3D can be viewed in 2D form. I'd really like to employ something similar to this, but instead of completely blending in, using my body in interrupt the image or type.
Our groups high object presented on a pedestal. we made a small Louis Vuitton coin purse of white leather, marker, staples and string. We also took a photo of small minimalist artwork on a fridge for presentation. I like this difference in value and think it would good to play with my works on levels like this when I photograph them. Will I place it on a pedestal in bright studio light, or will it work better and convey a meaning through it's placement, for example, hanging on a fridge. probably not..
