Not A Perfect Soldier, But A Good Man
Steve became my favourite Avenger, or Marvel character, back in 2011. I remember being in the cinema, with very low expectations, and watching the movie unfold with mild interest.
Steve proved himself to be very complex in scene, he didn’t mindlessly hate Germans, he saw them and HYDRA as bullies just like any other and he wanted to do something about it before they could hurt others. He didn’t make it about him, he didn’t make it about America or Germany, he made it about the basic fact of him defending the Little Guy, whoever and wherever they may be.
Steve inspired me, despite his many shortcomings, his poor health and his many rejections, he kept on trying because helping was not something he could avoid. He wanted to help in any way he could, and then he volunteered without a thought to Erskine’s experiment as a way to help, even if it wasn’t his initial idea of being soldiers. Then they benched him, turned him into a propaganda machine, but the second he got wind of Bucky being MIA he went into battle, with or without army permission and saved not just what concerned him, i.e., Bucky or just Americans, he saved everybody. He accepts everybody as long as they’re good people just like he formed the Howling Commandos, a multi-ethnic and multi-national team, just like he trusted Natasha, an ex-Soviet spy, and Erskine, a German during a time where everyone hated and mistrusted Germans. He doesn’t make assumptions, he doesn’t mindlessly hate, and he certainly doesn’t hurt people who don’t hurt others.
Steve is not just America’s hero, he is everyone’s hero. He may break the law, work around it and disobey orders but it’s all for the greater good, because that’s what Steve Rogers is.
Not a perfect soldier but
Before he is your icon, your Avenger, your propaganda, your soldier and captain, Steve Rogers is a good man.
Which is why this breaks my heart. I look up to Steve, I identify with him, I love him and it’s unfair for some jackass looking for shock value to do this to me and everyone else who loves Steve and what he, as a man and as Cap, stands for.
Steve Rogers is my hero and you can’t take him away from me, not like this.
