Liir’s voice wavered a moment with trepidation. He never said the words “my mother,’ as if the very word were a hex upon the listener. But...the woman’s tone was difficult to place. Not malice, not murderous. Was it confused?

He lowered the hood, feeling for the infant tied to his back more out of absentminded habit than anything else (perhaps a half-formed concern, one rooted in responsibility instead of the wilting shell of memory of what exactly had happened).

“Why? What was she to you? What do you know?”

The witch was dead. Wasn’t she?

“Who are you?”

Liir wasn’t sure how he arrived there. He wasn’t sure how most magic worked these days, even as it coursed through his very being. A soft whimper sounded from the tiny being strapped to his back, covered by the heavy, ratty cloak.

He, as always, appeared something of vagabond. Torn bag strung haphazardly across his chest. His hair, long, black, and matted hung in front of his face.

The town seemed…familiar. The building too. Austere. Larger than most structures there. Was this still the eastern region?

Liir didn’t trust authority. And yet here he was.

“Perhaps you can help me.”

His mouth twister somewhat. His face remained mostly masked.

Finally getting around to “The Secret History” is wild. Because I am a person who both went to one of those “Great Books” lib arts programs and then to an elitist grad school. And it really do just be like that.

So “the secret history” is wild because, for a time, I went to one of the schools used as a dominating inspiration and now I’m remembering why I avoided this book for a while.

Spoiler: it’s because I had a breakdown and was asked to leave

It occupied the time in a very lonely childhood. He wished he was better at connecting.

Rain stiffened at his fingers in her hair. Touch was still a weird thing for the two of them. It wasn‘t that Liir purposely had kept his touch from her, but she was so burdened with memories for him that the young girl hadn’t quite gotten comfortable with contact.

“ Thoughts. They’re thoughts. “ Rain muttered, tilting her head to the side. Still, her eyes never left the sky nor did any real emotion appear, “ And they go away. “

Liir sighed quietly and adjusted, pulling his legs up to his chest a bit.

“Well, what types of thoughts are they?”

It wasn’t the best question, but he was at a loss for words. He felt a tug. His love for his daughter. HIs pain at not being the best he could for her.
