an anti-israel protest by turkish ultranationalists yesterday in instanbul surrounded a synagogue [neve shalom], kicked the doors, & threw rocks at the windows, saying it was revenge for israel keeping muslims from entering haram al-sharif & that theyâll be back today & every day after that for more
the jewish community in turkey goes back two & a half millennium & they have nothing to do with israeli policy. please keep them in mind & refuse to let diaspora jews be blamed for israeli actions

donât get me wrong; i see the appeal of flower crown fanon jehan. but i feel like this is probably a lot closer to what it would be like to be friends with him. (via barricadeur)

well she dropped a music video and I'm reconciling myself to a future I knew was coming: anguished feelings & regrets about a woman destined to be famous and haunt me from every radio and billboard
Iâm not totally inclined to police anachronism in a fandom whose canon founded Georgia ~20 years early (in addition to the naval uniforms).* However, thereâs one idea Iâve seen cropping in Black Sails fandom that bothers me a little bit because of what it suggests about the way that we view historyâ and thatâs the idea that slavery was legal in early Georgia, specifically the Georgia of James Oglethorpe.Â
From the founding of Georgia in 1733 to 1750, slavery was forbidden. (The prohibition was informal at first, then formalized in 1735.) There are many reasons for this, some niceâ Oglethorpe seems to have been opposed to slavery on moral groundsâ and most only practical: the trustees of Georgia didnât want to risk slave uprisings, especially so close to Spanish Florida, and they also wanted to discourage idleness and the accumulation of wealth. (read more here)
When I see people assume that slavery must have been the accepted norm in the American colonies, especially in the South, it suggests to me a view of history in which slavery was inevitably a part of American history. In other words: there is literally no other way to imagine American history than with slavery involved. Aside from the fact that this is obviously incorrect, I would also argue itâs part of a larger narrative of history that sees us as progressing from âless civilizedâ times towards the âmore civilizedâ era we now enjoy. People in the past, we think, were not as advanced in their thinking as we are in ours; they were less capable of understanding the truths we understand.Â

tbh I wish more e/R shippers understood that yes, e/R has more weight in the brick than any other ship involving enjolras but the vast majority of that weight, on enjolrasâs end, is entirely narrative and symbolic not about how compatible they are in daily interactions or how âsecretlyâ in love enjolras is theyâre not there yet, how could they possibly be there yet? the only glimpse of a chance in this dynamic happens in OFPD but of course they die I understand writing them that way for fun but am surprised people treat this as the actual dynamic brick e/R is not enjolras thinking âyou know.... underneath it all.......i really do like grantaire....romanticallyâ brick e/R is vhugoâs disembodied voice gushing over Symbolism as he gives OFPD huge narrative impact and finishes enjolrasâs character arc (an arc that began with the influence of combeferre, his decision to save jehan, and his concern for the families of the dead) in his acceptance of grantaire most of the e/R dynamic lies in narration, metaphor, and structure because itâs not about what already exists, itâs foreshadowing of OFPD and what could have been

I feel bad but this is so fucking hilarious
if anyone is lost, Donald trump jr literally just tweeted out evidence of him being involved with Russia. Something this journalist has been trying to find evidence of for monthsâŠâŠ he is obviously in in shock đ

Hugo wrote [Enjolras being gay as] close to saying it outright as it was possible to do in his time.Â
no he didnât, there is a shit ton (relatively) of 19th century French literature with intimate relationships between characters of the same gender and characters who are explicitly interested in only the same gender and Enjolras is not one of them and has never been one of them in established literary theory and criticism. a lack of interest in a gender especially in the context of Enjolrasâs character and Les MisĂ©rables the novel as is does not explicitly indicate gayness, although that is a valid literary interpretation of the text (keeping in mind that Enjolras in canon is absolutely not a parallel with modern gay male culture). but as far as interpretations go, other things that are justified with the text:Â
(what would now be considered as) asexuality
celibacy with repressed or ignored desire
celibacy with acknowledged desire, but symbolic focus on greater causes
potential for interest in women with a symbolic focus on greater causes
homosocial interest in men (nonsexual; nonromantic; still more intimate than the already intimate mores of male interaction at the time)
Enjolras is described many times to be chaste and celibate; the dynamic between Enjolras and Grantaire in canon is far from what I would call a requited let alone healthy relationship. shipping Enjolras/Grantaire the way many people do is completely contrary to explicit canon on that basis alone.Â
but quit congratulating Hugo on his âgay representationâ that was âall he could doâ. he could have done more if he wanted to; he didnât. literature is up to interpretation and there are textual arguments for interpreting Enjolras as gay.
but this is shipping. there are also textual arguments for other things.shipping Enjolras with a woman does not affect real-life media representation. I donât know anyone who does that who has read the book cover to cover anyway - just like I find there are a lot of people who seem to be queer French literature experts but get basic, explicitly stated character details from the novel wrong.
modern AU fanworks have very little relation to the text to begin with - if youâre a stickler for Enjolras being gay in canon, why arenât you a stickler for Enjolrasâs canonical chasteness, celibacy, and masculinity? why arenât you a stickler for Grantaireâs alcoholism and overt misogyny? whether or not you are gay (I speak as a gender non-conforming lesbian; I find the claim that Les Mis fandom is full of gay men who identify with Enjolras to be exaggerated at best) this is cherry-picking and using shipping and your personal headcanon to attack people who literally donât know any better is not going to make them agree with you.
i made a meme for class and no one laughed :-(Â
Iâm glad that almost 70,000 people laughed at your joke to make up for that.
Drink With Me
I donât think that Grantaireâs solo in Drink With Me is actually as sad as one may think. Thereâs a strong juxtaposition between him singing about how they wonât be remembered and the reality of thousands of people commemorating their death. Perhaps the best example of this is George Blagdenâs video: the words of the song are contradicted by the actual video, in which he returns to the site of the barricade almost two centuries later and has now been viewed by thousands of people. In other words, Grantaireâs solo is beautiful because he was wrong. Their deaths did mean something and almost two centuries later, the people who lost their lives in the June rebellion are still remembered. Because ultimately the June rebellion has been immortalised by Les Miserables, and I doubt anyone will ever forget it. Â
how doesâŠ. âif you havenât read the book or seen the musical youâre still a les mis fan!â work exactlyâŠ.
Shoujo Cosette?!?!? :D
<3
To be fair, there are things Iâve been in the second-hand fandom of for months before being able to get my hands on the full source material. Mostly foreign stuff. And thereâs a lot you can piece together from other peopleâs fanwork and clips and gifs if you are intense enough.
I would argue that that makes you a Shoujou Cosette fan, to be honest?
I donât think itâs a lack of availability thing in most cases. Les MisĂ©rables is widely available online and has been translated into many languages. There are certainly valid reasons not to have read a long book with difficult topics and language, but if you have unrestricted internet access (not always the case in some countries), a bookstore with a well stocked classics section, or a library with the same, you can read Les MisĂ©rables. Two of those options are free.
The plot & characterization in most adaptations differ wildly from the source material. The fandom characterization is often completely removed from it, in a way that to me implies ⊠most people are fans of essentially book-only characters without having read the book. A lot of fan headcanons and characterizations are literally the opposite of details included in the novel.
I think being a movie fan or a musical fan is great (although I think being a musical fan used to mean one was into musicals in general but especially LM, and the way non-Brick musical fans interacted with it was different and more musical fannish than how Brick fans did - some people were in both though).
But I have seen people say things like âI hate the musical and donât want to read the book but I LOVE fandomâ with 100% sincerity. Really the root of my bitching is wondering how this actually happened and why - it doesnât make sense to me that someone would associate themselves with something that they only enjoyed a far removed and limited piece of, ie, modern AU ami fanfiction. Many people just have no interest in engaging with the book at all or the musical - and I find myself wondering a lot why theyâre here, when they could choose another piece of fiction that has a group of male characters they can write fic for.
