I don't think we appreciate how much of a departure Elantrians and the AonDor is from the rest of the Cosmere. Like Surgebinding and the Metallic Arts are very focused in their capabilities and its all creative applications of their abilities. Awakening is closer in vibe with how open ended it can be, but drop the AonDor next to a more rudimentary magic system, and it's the Wizard War meme to its full extent.

WaT spoilers

Rereading Warbreaker and seeing how Vasher/Zahel is so dismissive of Nightblood is so sad after WaT. Like they were always capable of growing as a person, because they have always been a person. Yet Vasher not only doesn’t acknowledge their feelings, he assumes that Nightblood doesn’t HAVE feelings despite all evidence to the contrary.

The reason they never grew before was due to their environment. Its only when Szeth and the other radiants/spren treat Nightblood as though their thoughts and feelings are important and worthy of consideration that they can grow as a person.
