write us something about cailan?
Cailan is an interesting one to write about, because even though they’re so closely related there’s almost nothing to go off of from canon. I believe Cailan should have been 2 or 3 when she dies in canon, and all of their interaction takes place in the past from a second hand source who is very depressed and probably remembering it through rose tinted glasses (Maric). The most we really get from the books is that she apparently loved being a queen and a mother more than being a warrior, and she liked to read to Cailan. That’s it.
My problem with that (from a character standpoint) is that Maric seems to remember it as if Rowan was all beauty and grace and perfection after the rebellion, and I just don’t buy that. We see several times throughout Stolen Throne that she wants to be those things. Rowan wants to be soft and pretty, but dammit there’s a war going on, and if she shows a shred of weakness then everyone looks at her as if she has three heads. She’s aggressive, she’s filthy 90% of the time, she’s “too muscular” for pretty dresses, not that she ever has a chance to wear them. She’s just not very good at being a girl. We see her struggle a lot with being comfortable outside her armor, literally and figuratively, throughout most of Stolen Throne. She finds some confidence along the way, and there is a distinct change in her towards the end of the book suggesting that idyllic feminine queen Maric remembers. However, that’s also the exact moment David Gaider transforms her from a wonderful fleshed out character into a fucking plot device. So I don’t trust it.
Now. Does Rowan enjoy being domestic more than being a warrior? Yes, absolutely. Does that change the fact that between Rowan and Maric she’s the more aggressive and pessimistic? No, no it doesn’t. She is not perfect just because she’s a wife and a mother now. She tries to be, but it’s ultimately something she’s still not 100% comfortable in. She’s harsher in her actions than she sometimes needs or means to be, not in the way of punishment, but definitely in teaching Cailan how to handle social situations. She’s fiercely protective of her family, and she will defend Cailan to a fault, even coddling him more than she really should.
I feel like this got very off topic, but it makes it hard to theorize a lot about their relationship when he’s older on my own, just because canon Cailan tends to be a carbon copy of Maric while also being neglected by him at a young age. It’s hard to tell what kind of impact she would have on him because her death defines what we see of his childhood in canon.
send me a topic to write a meta about my muse on
I might write anything from a paragraph to a whopping essay, but send me something you’ve noticed about my characterisation or just something you want to know about my muse and I will write what I can!
