Meet Emi, the heroine of the Emi Chronicles.
Unlike other horror protagonists, she's not afraid of the dark or the monsters that lurk in the night. After all, she's been dealing with them all of her life and knows they can't hurt the living - though the dead are another matter entirely.
Living with her nomadic exorcist father, she travels from place to place, never settling long in any area and always happy to help out those who need it, whether they're alive or not. Together they work to save the souls of the living and the dead.
Though young, she's well aware of just how horrible the world can be despite her father's best efforts to shield her. But how can you protect a child from seeing the dead, both good and evil, when you can't see them yourself?
Name: Emi Age: 9 (THaNoY), 10 (WETSS), 12 (APON) Eyes: One blue, one magenta Hair: Black, ponytail Personality: A bit of a tomboy, serious, brave, curious, intelligent, quiet. Likes: Animals, the dark, interacting with souls, saving people, mysteries, exploring, t-shirts and jeans Dislikes: Evil people, insects, potatoes, frilly dresses, maths and English, Disney movies (especially the princess ones) Family: Father (father: exorcist), Delilah (mother - deceased: died giving birth to Emi), Michel (older brother: currently travelling), Aunt Powers: Emi's abilities are exceptionally strong, especially given her young age. They promise to only get stronger as she grows, which is why her father believes that allowing her to use them will help her gain better control of them. Thus he allows her to take part in his exorcisms, sending her in first so that she can interact with the spirits who are trapped and tied to the living world.
Her latent power is used just by interacting with those spirits, learning of their deaths and helping them find the resolve to move on. Sometimes it's harder for them to do so, especially in the case of a violent or dark death/personality. She was born with the ability to see the world of the dead and has been able to interact with those beings since she was small, so she has no fear of being harmed by its denizens or of what she sees in that world. She's used to blood and gore, bones and the uglier side of humanity and fears it not. This is because she knows that there is no way for the dead to harm the living physically (though mental, emotional and psychological harm or entrapment is another thing altogether) except in very exceptional cases.
Many who know her and her father question his choice of travelling the country with her and using her in his work, but such is Emi's latent power that it doesn't matter where she goes - she connects and slips into the spirit world by accident frequently.
