Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest

Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people

dodge questions

answer indirectly

lie (badly)

change the subject

crack jokes to avoid serious answers

lie (convincingly)

say half of what they mean

tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying

If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.

Subtext is where tension lives.

The best advice I ever got, and thusly, I think, the reason I always get compliments on my dialogue, is this:

Your two characters are having a conversation, but each one is having a different conversation. They should always reply to what they think the other person is saying, and they should always be wrong about their assumption.

Now, obviously, like any writing advice, this rule is meant to be broken. Any writing advice you are given is more like... a guideline.

If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

My original series, Ember Wind, died for 2 reasons: Aircraft College & Burnout

From 2018-2020, I wrote close to 250k words across 3 and a half books & 2 seasonal short stories. I was finishing the main books in 6 months or less while working 40-60 hours a week at a dead-end auto repair job for $11/hour. I started College in fall of 2018 and my hours decreased but my life workload was significant. I was actively trying to build a platform on Wattpad; joining book review groups, contests, everything I feasibly could.

Lack of reach, viewership, interaction, on top of losing interest in writing what was effectively a Sword Art Online (SAO) fanfic, piled up and I quit writing altogether in 2020. Covid made my $50,000 repairman’s license look like a very questionable investment and after college I went back full time to auto repair for 6 months still making only $11/hour after 3 years.

At the time, I mentally surrendered my future to the plateau of being a minimum wage slave for Belle Tire…

There’s something that I don’t regularly mention and it probably explains miles of who I am. A lot of what modern me is stems from 2010. 2010 was the turning point in my life. Why?

Yep, that movie.

That movie has caused irreversible changes to my mental state. It got me to feel noticed, it got me to fall for the viking aesthetic (albeit a modernized fantasy-like one), and it showed me just how much better things are when you stop trying to appease everyone. While 10-year-old me barely understood the 3rd aspect, later me finally grasped it.

This movie also cemented my love for fantasy dragons. I know the books are a stark contrast to the movie

At present, Heart of Oak is around 105,000 words, and in 5x8 format comes out to about 388 pages. You never quite realize just how much you've written until you put it into this perspective

My Favourite Feelings as a Writer

When my characters write themselves

It doesn’t happen often, but when my characters seem to just say and do everything completely in character without me having to fight to make their dialouge sensicle and plot relevent, that’s honestly such a soothing feeling for a constantlty stressed writer

2. When it gets to my favourite chapter

I’m sure every author has spent days of their lives, daydreaming about future chapters they haven’t gotten around to writing yet. And there isn’t a better feeling then when that day finally comes. And that idea can become reality through words on a page.

3. When my character say something

Whether it be heartbreaking, beautiful, cruel or profound, I can’t help but give credit to the character rather than myself for the dialouge that appears on the page. Sometimes words on a page really mean more than you the things you can say with your lips.

4. When my writing makes me cry

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sucker for a good story, and sometimes, my own story is exactly what I’ve been looking for, that when I get a good idea, or I go back and read something I’ve written, I can’t help but shed a few tears at it. Whether it’s the quality or the moment itself, sometimes it just gets to me.

5. When my characters fall in love

I love romance, and my novel is a romance, so excuse me if I get a little bit excited each time my characters and heading more and more in love. Never mind that I planned it they would be a match in every universe.

6. When my music times up perfectly

There are some very rare occassions when my playlist matches up with the mood or even has topical dialouge that syncs with what I’m writing and if that doesn’t feel like fate is telling me I’m on the right track, I don’t know what does

My Favorite Feelings as a Writer

1. When the story writes itself

One of the best feelings I get is when the story I’m trying to tell writes itself. What I mean by that is the words come out onto the paper with little thinking effort from my end. I don’t have to sit there and think of how to make this scene work, it simply just does.

2. If I can feel it, they can too

One of my biggest goals is to make a story so well written that the people who read it can feel the same things I felt while writing it. When a scene breaks my heart or fuels my rage, I can only hope it translates well when the next person in line reads it. A writer’s best work is when they’re emotionally charged

3. The Music Clicks

I put on a massive variety of background music, but nothing quite hits like Beast in Black during a high-intensity fight scene. I can think clearly through the lyrics and rythm, I can mentally see the fight panning out like some animation on youtube

4. The urge, the drive, the motivation returns

I struggle a lot with actually sitting down and doing the things I need to do, but when that switch flips, what follows is fantastic. When the drive returns, 8,000 words feels like 2, 12 pages feels like 4, and everything just works and nothing can stop me

After 2 years of not using this platform because I got preoccupied using Bluesky, I’m back and I’m determined to make a mark, in some way, shape, or form. I need to learn how to use this place properly

To see civilization rise is an amazing thing. To see it rise twice is phenomenal. To see it fall not just once but twice, is a harrowing experience. To see a world so perfect become ravaged by greed, to say it breaks the heart paints a light picture.

The world they live in, has fallen much further. While the disease and caustic nature of human progression has been wiped clean for ten thousand years, the scars remain.

Ancient texts from the old world recall devices and technologies once ubiquitous, now almost completely erased. Even if the concept of electricity is understood, their world has no practical use for it beyond war mages.

Buried deep within the recesses of Huma, there are no-go zones that are home to destructive forces invisible to even magical senses. Anything or anyone who dwells in the exclusion zones rarely comes back and those who do never live for much longer. Necrosis sets in and their bodies rot even while they’re alive.

Even if the outworlders recognize these objects and devices, those who live in the world could not be convinced such items exist. To them it is beyond magic, it is even higher than the powers of the gods themselves.

A weapon known to exist is shrouded in mystery. Many call it “Ashen Devourer”. Buried deep within the ground, it lays dormant, ready to awaken and consume the world itself in a single gulp.

Creation is a fascinating thought. All that is around us willed itself into existence. Why? Because a deity said so? Why did they wait so long? How did they know how to? Where did it all come from?

To them, the people whose lives are written between the lines on a page, these are the very same thoughts that their philosophers ponder. To us, who see from a perspective that they cannot, we know the answers they seek but are unable to tell them, not in any way that matters.

They call it free will. They are animated by the string of plot lines written by the puppeteer, the true overlord of their existence. It’s an eerie harmony of illusion and perception that keeps the daydream going. The pages you read are the very same barrier that stops them from perceiving us and from us influencing them.

It’s a grim dark reality to let ride the waves of thought. Some would even dare challenge the source of the material, to convince the puppet master that there be no need for such suffering. But even with all my power and influence over every minute detail, they do have free will, however limited it may be. Their personalities limit their capabilities, narrow the paths they take, and ultimately, that decides their fates

Unbeknownst to most, I spend hours thinking about a thousand and one background aspects. Half my book is written on random trains of thought. Yes, I should try and plan my plot instead of pantsing it. But these details, this understanding of my own world isn't there from the beginning.

In many ways, I'm an archeologist in my own works, using what I can find to piece the puzzle together. The spontaneous trains of thought can be moved around to make a scene and that's very much how it's done.

I'll follow one story for a bit and then discover that there's a whole other aspect that I can expand upon, like another cave drawing that explains the first one. It's a very chaotic method but it's how everything is both found and made.

No history is wholly linear. There's gaps. Some of the bridges are inferences, others, works of fiction. The background lore that builds from inference builds upon itself and sometimes creates new branches that have to be researched somewhere else.

History is written as it happens today. However, due to constraints, someone a few hundred years later will have read some diaries about today and make their own "truth" about what they see as history. Then someone will find six or twelve of those "studies" and make an overarching piece that explains it all in one go.

History is found and inferred, sometimes made from fiction. My book, the world that exists around those characters is no different and little by little, I as their creator, am piecing together their history.
