Hands! Really missed my watercolours!
Gel pen and ink on parcel paper. Really feel like I'm developing my own style of drawing?? I'm happy with this. One of my better portraits, for sure.
Cheeky selfie with my peach (at Cardiff, United Kingdom)
First sketch in a month or so, really pleased with this one 😁
Got my disposables developed and photography counts as art
Have started a little series of wobbly drawings of pretty places as part of my Place project I am continuing over summer. The first three are from trips to Bristol, the last is my partners bedroom in Cardiff; all place I feel connected to. More to come and I will hopefully make an outcome for this project!
Have taken a shine to the sky, water and heavily layerd acrylic at the moment. Trying to play with texture and light. I don’t normally get along with painting using acrylic but I am getting used to it! More to come!
Progression of life drawing. The first one was at the start of the course and the last was a month before finishing.
Some more portfolio pictures, this time of my Place project.
My idea with this project was to create a mash-up of places I know, love, and feel safe and at home i, the most obvious of these being my bedroom. I added the string and fabric over the bedroom because I built a lot of dens as a child, and these also made me feel safe, and usually involved a blanket roof.
I also feel really at rest by the sea or any body of water, so I included the bubble wrap river and the patch of yellow ‘sand’ beside it. I also find comfort in forests and wooded areas, hence the mini woods.
I would have liked to have tied them all in with each other a bit more, rather than have them so separate. I also think cling film would have worked better than bubble wrap for the river. I would have liked to make more wire trees too, rather than my Styrofoam ones. I feel they would have looked much better.
I think this would have been a good idea to base my FMP off. I will continue this project through summer.
Realized I didn’t post any picture of my finished Bowie set for the Ephemeral project, so here’s a few that made it to my portfolio!
Ideally, the red and blue platform would float above the gold one (like in the first picture), creating a layered effect and multiple levels for the performers to use. The lightning bolts and stars that are dangling from the top would be floating about too, and would hold lighting fixtures. There would be hundreds of them and the whole thing would be floating about in space.
I looked into fantastic architecture for this project, and I was inspired by Bowie’s constellation. I feel Bowie himself was rather fantastic and other-worldly, and so his place of performance should be too.
I am happy with my outcome, however I really really should have incorporated lighting. If I had used the cardboard skyscrapers I made the lights could have been put on top of them and I could have different colours aimed at different parts of the play to create an atmosphere. I also really wish I had time to put horses on my carousel; and maybe not used the silver glitter (purely for my aesthetic preferences). Ideally, I would have made the dorm rooms in the school, as a fair portion of the book is set there at the start. I could have put loads more things in the museum, in the book Holden talks about seeing the Native American artifacts and dioramas, I would have really liked to include these. With regards to the head and the 'runaway' part, I could have made the head bigger and put a small house on top of it, maybe with my actors on top and more trees about. I feel that this was an important part of the book, it really shows Holden's anxieties around growing up with such phonies. In himesight, this should have been much more important in me set. I would have liked to make the themes of non-comformity and teen angst clearer to the audience too; though I am not sure how I would have done that. All of these things that would have been really great on the set got left behind or scrapped because of my poor timekeeping. Being dyspraxic, organisation is something I have always struggled with. This is something I will need to overcome if I pursue a career in scenic design.
Final major project, finally finished.
Unfortunately I didn't get to take any pictures on my camera so apologies for the poor quality.
The end is nigh. My little set is finally coming together! Finishing touches such as sanding the bottom of my ducks (they stuck to the paper in the kiln), adding my horses for the carousell and adding my architectural figures will be added on monday. I am very proud of this set. Praying I get the grade I need (merit/B grade equivalent) so I can carry on my journey to being a full-fledged set designer in Bath Spa uni!
Beginnings of Pency Prep School. Can now confirm that its all straightened up and measured correctly. Enjoyed making this more that I thought I would, straight lines aren't usually my thing. Ideally I would have made dorms for the set, too.
Start of my grid for my plinth. The grid represents conformity and by placing colourful objects on top that don't fit into the grid, I am apposing it. This links with the angsty-teeny vibe of the book and my set.
He went from looking quite sweet to looking like something from Alien Vs Predator. Plastersine and wire frame.
Card animals for my zoo, yet to be painted.
Process of moulding my ceramic ducks. Do love a bit of clay.
